Shadow of the Colossus, Portal, Silent Hill 2, and Bioshock.

Both have astonishingly strong themes. Colossus about love, sacrifice, and despair. Portal about survival and science. Silent Hill 2 about the same things Colossus is about only ten times more disturbing. Bioshock for its political and philosophical themes. They also elicit strong emotional responses from me.

That would be Bioshock: an observation of a second order concerning gaming. It took literature centuries to get this far.

I have fun, other then that I don't think I should justify it to anyone.

If someone believes it's a waste of time, then they don't have to waste their time on it.
It doesn't bother me.

I don't know if it's been said already (and I don't know what we're defending against) but I'm going to say LittleBig Planet.
It encourages creativity.
It isn't violent.
It's simple while still being involving enough that serious gamers can enjoy it.
and most of all it's just plain FUN! :D

Manhunt. (I kid.)

On a more serious note I'd choose Maplestory. While it get's tons of shit from everyone for grind, NX cash stealing etc. It does introduce A LOT of gamers to the idea of playing games. Even if that game is really really bad.

Ocarina of Time, or Majora's Mask
those two are just amazing
Have to second you on that one! Those games are better than most games that I have seen on 7th Gen consols! writing, gameplay, combat even graphics (in the case of comparing it to some wii games)

When I play those games I remember why I love games!

Half-Life 2.
Why? Because it follows an established formula of average length game-on-tracks railroad shooter with X amount of cool guns and predictable plot twists? What is it about it that makes you use it to defend gaming?
No. It's because it's flawless. One of the best games ever made. Great characters, story, environments. It's a game that makes you care about the characters. Why not use it to defend gaming?

It's not THAT good. I know Yahtzee said he really liked it and stuff so naturally it's awesomesauce etc, but I wouldn't go chucking words like "Flawless" around with it.

Saint's Row 2, good honest fun with humour and player choice chucked right in there.
Well, choice of your character's voice and appearance... your character's always a criminal.

Really? What's wrong with it then?

Just about anything Suda 51 is responsible for. Love it or hate it, you have to admit the man takes the medium into new places.

Well it's half outdated shooter with suprisingly slow paced combat when it's trying to be an FPS, then half fairly linear showcasing of the source engines physics system when it's not getting the shooty on. The seesaw puzzle was good, but they don't need to keep doing it over and over! The lack of regerating health can do one as well, stuff like that discourages exploration in the few non-linear bits.

It's a good game overall, don't get me wrong. It's just not "flawless". The whole thing does feel like a long ass tech demo of the Source engine tho. And the vehicles are terrible, tho most games with vehicle sections bugger them up.

i'm going with shadow of the colossus too.

It shows that the gaming can have beauty, great story without special effects or long dialogue and fun gameplay without blood and gore.
Playing this game would spark imagination, not 'create violent tendancies' as the media loves to suggest.
