On the other hand such a large ordanace platform, as you correctly up it, would more than easily be decked out with modern small anti air capabilties. They cannot possibly be more lumbering than modern aircraft carriers. If proper modern shock technology and shifting balast were incorparate into the design the guns could be reduced in size considerable without losing any impact. More potent explosive compounds could be use for increase range, you could arm the damn things with fuel-air shells. You dont get much bigger than that. Plus, on the point of accuracy. With modern GPS aiming and calibration, I cant see that their accuracy could be that far off a missile, and provides far better suppresion. Granted collateral damage would be far larger. We wouldnt be dropping shells down chimnies like we do bombs and missiles, but we do that because we are in civilian areas. If we ever when back to total war, where 100's of miles of ground are devoid of anything but combatants, why the hell do we care about collateral?

My point is everyone says "Battleship", and we cunjure up 1940's giants. Realistically, the long guns of a BS are barly different from Napolionic era cannons, just scaled up. They have recived virtually no modernisation. Imagine the potencial of such a weapon if we had actually bothered with stages between the long guns and the rail cannon. Since they are in effect the same thing under modernisation.
Thankee for the Posleen heads up, will check out.

Anyway, true, the concept of naval artillery hasn't changed in... five hundred ish years (tube, propellant + projectile and point at target), though it can't really change from that. Still, you've given me pause for thought regarding shock-absorption... worth an naval architect's time, I'm sure.

*meh* Once you can get naval artillery railguns, though, this entire argument is moot.

Another idea: HMS Ultima Ratio Regum, with the name engraved on everything that so much as spits.

if it's seabound: The Space Annihilator.
if its a space-battleship: The Water Buffalo.
why? so i seem confused, and anyone who talks about it when it's relatively unknown looks like an idiot. people think i'm confused, or the idea of it being called that is stupid therefore they dont believe the legends (i'll make them up), and BOOM! you fall into my trap.

USS Texas.

Hell, I already have one in Minecraft! 100% legit, mobs (zombies, creepers, etc.) were on and I had to mine out ALL of that then cook it from cobble into smooth stone. That's right, I didn't spawn a single block. Oh, and it is to full scale.

(It's an Iowa-Class battleship for those who are not history buffs.)

id assume it would be from some 3rd world country, i mean seriously, what self respecting nation employs battle ships these days. depends on the nation, i have no desire going to war on some obsolete relic. but if i could just have one and have a nation pay my way, with out me being part of a navy that is obligated to go to war if called, than fuck yes.

id name it the Normandy, cause mass effect rocks.

I believe that there are only four battleships that could be restored to working condition, and none of them are in service. They'd sort of have to refit them all, which would cost a lot of money for little gain.
Is that the Iowa-class four? I know that the New Jersey is a museum ship, don't know about the other three.

Sudden thought: the RN still has the oldest commissioned warship in the world. In all your faces! XD
You would be correct, the last battleship to see open combat was the USS Missouri in the Gulf War. She is now in Pearl Harbor as a museum ship the other 2 up until 2005 or 06 where on "standby." They should all be decommissioned now if memory serves me right.

and by the way:
USS Constitution is the oldest commissioned naval vessel.

EDIT
OT I would call it: Mufasa

What kind of battleship? Are we talkin' Bismark/Tirpitz, Yamato, Missouri, Prince of Wales, or Leviathan class(Battletech)?

I'd name her(if she wasn't named already 'cause I'm not going there) Dauntless 'cause I'm going to need to be fearless if I'm going to war in a F***ING battleship!. Seriously! Torpedoes, bombs, planes, land based missiles, ground based artillery, and pirates! That ship better come with ammo and Marines...

If it was mine to do with as I please then I'd make it my gun toting, armor plated, mobile home. I'd have to mess with cruise ships(at least once) by having target practice next to one. And fun would also be had without shenanigans, but it won't be the same.

Since people have already explained that Battleships are outdated, I would call mine the HMS Stubborn, and it would be ultra light and fast, fitted with all the highest tech defence systems money can buy, and a massive ram at the front, instead of guns. We would charge at any enemy ship, absorbing all their fire, and then ram the suckers.

H.M.S. Irrepressible

Sounds noble, gallant, graceful and just about everything an obsolete masterpiece should be.

I get a battleship??? Cool beans!

First thing I'm gonna do is burn off all that ammo, because how often do you get to fire a cannon? After that, cruise service. Take people out for a ride on a genuine battleship, charge them $500 a head, and no step 3, just profit.
When I become the President, I will have an Iowa class Battleship re-fitted as my Presidential Yacht. I would name her Vainglorious Death and completely gold-plate it.
