So...

I recently got in a conversation with a newly acquainted friend of mine. A discussion that gradually transferred from video games to movies.

I made a reference to a Tyler Durden quote, but he didn't seem to get it. He had never seen Fight Club. Huh... I tried bringing up Old Boy, but he hadn't even heard of that movie. Fair enough, I suppose. But when I brought up Pulp Fiction, he hadn't even the slightest idea what the movie was about - not even a quote!

And thus: personal DVD-collection to the rescue! Now while I think Fight Club is a movie every (wo)man should see at least once in his/her life, I decided to hook him up with Pulp Fiction first. And guess what? He hated it! He actually called it flat-out boring and uninteresting!

Now, my question to you: have you ever met a man so void of modern cultural knowledge you just couldn't believe it?
(I mean, in the end, the fact that he hadn't seen the movies still baffled me more than the fact he thought Pulp Fiction sucked. In the end, people still have the right to have their own opinions, even if they don't make sense...)

Oh, and not surprisingly, he had also never seen A Clockwork Orange or The Godfather - though I've experienced more than once in my life, that there are more people who simply quote the movies instead of actually seeing them.

There are so many 'must see' movies out there. And for every one you haven't seen, there will be a crowd of people who will be shocked, maybe even disgusted, by this.

Fucking Star Wars. Everyone who hasn't seen the original ONLY trilogy needs to before I find them and strap them to a chair, with their eyelids held open by surgical equipment, forcing them to watch them all for a year straight.

Out of all you've said, I've only seen Fight Club. But I've heard of the rest, but don't actually know what Pulp Fiction's about.

I remember knowing someone who hadn't seen Star Wars or Lord of the Rings. But meh.

Your friend is experiancing what is called '[a href=http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HypeBacklash]hype backlash[/a] It happens a lot with 'classic' films and the like where everyone says how great it is, it's a cultural phenomenon, ect. So when you see it there's no way it could actually be that good... so... you don't just dislike it, you hate it for letting you down so much.

The amount of women i've dated that never saw the original star wars movies baffled me. Especially considering my age (and therefor that of the women)

I've never seen any of the godfather movies or scarface. Truth be told I'm so fucking sick of scarface and hearing about him that I don't want to see it and there's no way I could see the movie without hating it. (I'm a cop i work with certain people; the low level drug dealers, nearly illiterate thugs and the like LOVE that movie)

I've only barely heard of the movies you said. I still don't have any desire to watch any of them, though.

Me.

No Star Wars, Shawshank Redemption, Fight Club, Old Boy, Pulp Fiction, Clockwork Orange, Godfather 2 and 3, any Matrix, Kill Bill, Avatar, Borat, The Usual Suspects, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Citizen Kane...

The list just goes on. While I haven't watched any of these films I have extensive knowledge about things related to them. (Greedo shot first, Blue Pill - Red Pill, It was his sled, I'm your father, that kind of stuff and more)

I have never seen Fight Club and have no real desire to. Pulp Fiction, yes I've seen that, but I don't find it interesting at all. It was "great" at one point, back when I was a teenager and giggled at things I didn't understand, but now that I've gotten older I find I don't like a lot of Tarantino's works. That's just how it goes, though.

I never really watch too many films, and people still act surprised when I mention that I have never watched *blank* film, or TV programme.

But then again when people say to me "I have never heard of Monty Python before, are they a band" I really want to slap them across the face with a wet fish...

Can you believe it? I didn't expect myself to like that movie so much, yet hardly anyone has even heard of it.

My mum has never seen The Two Towers and Return Of The King.
Right now, we are watching the extended editions.

It's actually pretty incredible what people haven't seen. My fiancee teaches film history, and we are both constantly depressed at the complete lack of awareness these kids seem to have about ANYTHING, much less film related stuff. If it isn't modern and main stream for the most part they have NO idea what she is talking about.

So, she likes to mess with them by showing them things they would not only never see on their own, but also that they probably aren't prepared for in a movie going experience. Like using the 80's as an excuse to talk about foreign film, and then showing them Tetsuo: The Iron Man in class. HA! I love her so.

DAMN HIM! DAMN HIM FOR HAVING OPINIONS! We shall grab the torches and pitchforks, and meet him outside his house at dusk.

But I digress. I'm like your friend. I had never seen Fight Club, I STILL haven't seen Pulp Fiction, I haven't watched any of the Rocky movies all the way through, nor have I watched a Star Wars movie all the way through. I haven't watched Rambo, I haven't watched the Robocops, Terminators, Animal House, Weekend At Bernie's...

I could go on and on. But yeah. I didn't grow up watching those movies. Odds are if I watched them, I'd probably love them. But I don't. So I don't.

I have a friend like that. He's living in the US his entire life but he's never seen a majority of the classic American movies that I can name. Every week I make him come to my place and watch a classic movie with him (last week it was Dirty Harry).

You see, I get the problem your friends get but without it being the whole 'classic movie', they will flip out at me for not having seen some obscure anime after I told them that I hardly ever watch anime but on movie side of things I have watch almost all of the movie classics and most of my friends haven't so methinks they have their priorities wrong.

I haven't seen Fight Club, Old Boy, Donnie Darko, stuff like The Waterboy and some of those stupid Adam Sandler type movies. I usually get gasps of shock when I tell people. I really don't care because I've seen a whole spectrum of movies the "gasp-ers" usually haven't.

I've seen Fight Club, and I don't see what the big deal is about it, nor do I really agree with peoples interpretation of the messages contained within, or that it has anything to do with self-empowerment (but that's a discussion for another day). And I've seen part of A Clockwork Orange, but it sickened (and bored, mistifyingly enough) me too much to continue- I couldn't find enjoyment or value in a movie about manipulation, abuse, and rape. Not my cup of tea.

I've never seen Old Boy, Pulp Fiction, or the Godfather. I've at least heard of Pulp Fiction and the Godfather, but not of Old Boy. Most other 'popular' films (at least of the late 80's, 90's, and 00's) that people bring up I've seen.

Not everyone goes out and sees movies all the time, nor particularly care about popular movies. Sometimes people even have standards that won't let them watch certain movies. It's not as though it is a thing that will really have any impact on your life, outside of some of your friends judging you as 'weird'. =)
