When I was a kid I wanted to be a cop, solider, or boxer.
Violence was an important aspect of my childhood values and those people got to be violent and help people (cept theboxer).
As I aged I grew to hate cops for reasons, discovered that I didn't want to die after seeing how painful and scary it was and had enough fist fighting to last me a lifetime.
Then my dream became to get a safe and simple job as a teacher of history, biology and chemistry and I'm currently working my way to those goals :D

I have always wanted to be a filmmaker. I'm currently shooting a short film while simultaneously getting a feature together.

Congratulations!
I'm delving deeper into my studies into meteorology and I feel pretty good about it.
Though today I'm playing "Operational Forecaster" instead of my usual bit since my region is ripe for storms and tornadoes.

Not to brag or anything, I am on my way to becoming a pokemon master by collecting all 649 pokemon before the release of X and Y. Oh and I am in school studying to become a game developer.

When I was a little girl I wanted to be a sniper for the military. (Whole family is military, which is the only way to somewhat explain that >.>) A bit later in life, my father explained that I was born the wrong gender; the military didn't allow female snipers. It was my first blow out argument with him.

Now my dream is to read everything that looks vaguely interesting. It's the kind of dream a person can never actually achieve, but you die happy trying.

I've always wanted to write a novel with a very realized world, one that is very open to interpretation and fan fiction. A story that would make a younger person dream of an amazing world the same way the Hobbit made me dream of trolls dwarves and dragons.

....Ohh....it's going to be that thread.

....Ahh.......well shit. I honestly don't know what I wanted to be when I was a child, because I had no idea what I wanted to be when I was a kid. I was one of those kids that had absolutely no aspirations for his own future, mainly because he didn't know how the world worked.

Now, 13 years later, no idea what I want to be, because knowing how the world works terrifies me and that just slams down and destroyes all the aspirations that might wanna come into me.

But, the one thing that has been inside, the one thing that doesn't go away no matter how scared I get, is being a creator. I want to create stuff. Ya'know, paintings, drawings, sculptures and such. Artistic stuff and all that mumbo jumbo and it is only getting better each year as I continue with my education as an artist.

Hopefully I will be able to create something that people would be able to look at and be inspired to create their own works and be artists in their own way. That is currently my "Childhood" dream.

My childhood dream is to hack my very own version of Final Fantasy Six.
How close am I to achieving this? If I had the focus and attention span to actually try, I could be doing it now. I've even got all the necessary tools and plans and everything else practically finished.

Why don't I? I'm lazy and find it hard to focus on any one thing for too long. Plus it feels like work and I quickly get uppity about that sort of thing.

I've always wanted to be either a Cartoonist or a Politician. Right now, I'm in Community College for a Bachelors in Law, and I have Adobe Flash for part time animating.

my dream as a kid was to work with computers, then i found out programming is hard if your memory is like ram and you have the math skills of *insert witty reference here*.

so my dream now is to buy my own place and not get into crippling debt doing so... this might keep me entertained for a while.

I am currently trying to become a game developer. I'm progressing in programming at a decent pace; it's hard but rewarding once you manage to do something substantial. Granted, many of my friends and classmates are already at the level where they can make small games, so I'm going to need to do something to build up my experience and stay competitive.

Maybe secondary career option would be a writer. I'm very good in literacy and have been considering writing songs. I can pop out verse like a mofo.

I've wanted to be a Scriptwriter since my early teen years and whilst that dream is more or less crushed at this point, I do still harbor hopes of continuing my writing in my spare time once the overwhelming sense of despondent apathy dissipates somewhat. In short, the answer to your question would be no.

Why not both? Maybe you can draw political cartoons.

First off, gratz on your awesome achievement! :D Don't turn into some crazy mad scientist though. o_o
Is there any other kind? I started studying Chemistry partly to see what kind of crazy stuff I could get up to in labs.

There are so many awesome answers here! Also plenty that make me feel less weird about wanting to be a scientist, because apparently I was supposed to want to be a footballer or model or some such.

When I was a kid I wanted to be a teacher (hahahahahahahahaha...) but as you can imagine, that didn't pan out. When I got into secondary school I realised what a huge mistake that would've been.

My new career goal is to one day own my own Pub. ('cause I'm British and what-not). I think it'd be great to be a landlady somewhere on the edge of the countryside. :D

That or something with owning a lot of animals... Could combine the two though.
I make no promises, however I will attempt to keep my inventing on the side of sane. I could totally go for being Yorkshire Bond villain, kind of like a cross between Sean Bean and whichever one was a mad scientist. Also you should totally do it, do it! There aren't enough good pubs in this country, you always end up in a Wetherspoons or Scream. Both run good pubs, but they've not got the right feel to them.

Now I am at a horrible position where I have to decide where I want to go next... and because I am already in the role I wanted I don't know where would be good! :/
I have little idea how the military works so this may not be entirely applicable, but can't you just choose to remain where you are?
Unfortunately not! :(

As an officer I move every 18 months to 2 years to a different job within my branch. (So a different ops job). It is nearly always on a different base too, so I will have to also move where I live. It's up to me to influence the decision makers so that I can go to another good job that is interesting, in a good location in the country, that I will enjoy otherwise I will just get stuck in the arse end of nowhere for 2 years with no job satisfaction! :p

I have no idea what I want to do though. I am so happy here that the thought of the next place is just a bit depressing!

i can not remember a single moment in my life when i ever wanted to be anything in life more specific than "rich enough to not starve or freeze to death"
even now when i try to work out what i want to be or do i get depressed. the closest i can come up with is the realization that i'm a pretty damn good cook but i know i don't want to be a chef

I always wanted to make a video game when I was kid. I am currently going to school so I can become a programmer and hopefully someday work myself into the industry. I got a ways to go but I know I'll see this childhood dream through one day.

I promised plenty of relative new cars when I was little. Thankfully they'll all be dead before I can be expected to deliver on those...

I was hoping to be any number of things, but not the path I'm pursuing, which is apparently programming. But my other ambition is to make a comic in my free time, and maybe one day I will, but I'm really god damn slow with Photoshop currently. -_-
