Zelda: A Link to the Past is better than Ocarina of Time

So I've spent years hunting down Ocarina of Time as ALTTP is one of my all time favorites and every gamer from here to Hyrule claims that Ocarina is the greatest game ever made.

Well I'm sorry but it's just not.

A Link To The Past in my eyes is far superior in many ways and I would like to know if anyone else agrees...

First off, graphically. Now this can be put down to timing as ALTTP was made at the pinnacle of 2D graphics so everything looked smooth and colourful, with no hitches.

Ocarina was made when polygons were just coming into fashion and some of the fledgeling character models and environments look awful and clunky.

More importantly, the gameplay.

Everything in ALTTP worked perfectly. The combat, aiming and puzzle solving, were intuitive, challenging and fun. The simple refined 2D control scheme was an absolute joy to use.

I am currently about halfway through Ocarina and I cannot count the amount of times the controls have made me want to scream at the TV.

The lock on system was a great innovation but it is broken and you have to be aiming right at an enemy within a certain distance for it to work.

This would be fine if you could control the camera but it gets itself into the most awkward angles possible during many fights and you end up stuck in a corner frantically trying to turn and lock onto an enemy that is behind you jumping on your little green head.

The camera is also a nightmare in small corridoors or in closed in puzzle areas, and would it have been too much to ask to have an option to NOT invert the first person look?

The clues of where to go next can get that little bit too cryptic... I refuse to use a walkthrough but wandering around with no idea what to do for 20 mins before accidentally clicking A in front of a gravestone isn't fun.

I dread the Water temple...

Now maybe when I finish the game I will feel differently but for now, ALTTP is still by far the best Zelda game in my mind.

Feel free to tell me how wrong I am...

Nope you're right, the only thing that lets me consider OOT to be good is nostalgia. Granted Majoras Mask would hand them both their collective ass.

At the time ocarina was great cause it was new and different. Your relavtively young i assume but you must remmeber when "Next gen" graphics were just coming in and people were buying kameo like OMG WTF THE GRAPHICS ARE REALL!!

Edit: But i agree with you that i prefer to play ALTTP i've spent many fond hours on that game

Thank christ I finally found someone who aggrees with me on this.

I've been saying ever since Ocarina came out that ALTTP is better. Everything in ALTTP is better, Ocarina of time is good, but no where near as good as ALTTP.

I've played neither, so I can't really contribute.

But I will tell you that Zelda on Wii left me a bit underwhelmed.

I'm 29 LOL.

And actually this could help with my bias as I played ALTTP when it came out and only got Ocarina last week... but even 'at the time' the graphics looked shit to me! (but I hated polygons when I was a kid, dunno why...)

Totally agree. Link to the Past is probably always going to be my favorite Zelda, though Wind Waker's a very, very close second.

Ocarina fans, you think the Water Temple's tough? Try Turtle Rock. Even if you manage to beat it, it'll haunt your nightmares for weeks.

None of the games mentioned here are Link's Awakening, which is the best LoZ game by miles.

Never played ALTTP but since its in 2D its probably better than OoT cause that game is quite ropey =/ but MM still owns all other Zelda games.

No, I do not agree with you. I've never been keen on the 2D Zeldas and ALttP was the bottom of the barrel for me. It was a truly dissatisfying game and I still haven't finished it.

It must all come down to nostalgia, I played Ocarina three years ago and adored it, I played ALttP a year ago and hated it. I'm pretty sure the ones who loved it played it on the SNES years ago.

A Link to the Past > All other Zelda games

And it isn't a nostalgia thing. I am old enough to remember playing the original Zelda when it was new. As awesome as it was, ALTTP was better.

I liked OOT for the well music. I was ticked they took the classic one out you know the one that goes DUN DUN DUN DU DU DU DU DU DUN DUN.

(Bet those who grew up with Zelda can hear the music in there head.)

I love OOT, always have. So if I were to play LTTP, it'd be hard for it to outweigh my affection for OOT.

I enjoy both on an equal level, because I got into zelda with the option of both 2D and CG. I have always kept both styles of games separate; mainly because the mechanics of a 2D top down scroller are going to vary immensely from a CG game where the world you character interacts with exists on the X, Y, and Z planes.

To compare the two together is like comparing a cat to a dog, sure both are house pets but one shits in a litter box. OOT was great for its era, but when you put it up against the type of games we have today its going to seem pretty shitty. I've never really agreed with people who've played OOT for the first time in the current period of gaming because I feel their perspective and expectations for the game are tainted from what it would have been in its respective heyday.

Sure you can go into playing it with the mind set of when the game was made and what kinds of technology and experience they had to work with when they made it, but you're still going to look at some stuff and be like "This looks like shit" I'm not calling your opinion of the game moot or wrong because of your lateness in playing it; I'm just saying that it is somewhat tainted by what the game industry has to offer us today.

I bought OOT on the virtual console a while back and I can't bring myself to finish the Forest Temple. It's just not fun.
