So, what? Now he finally appreciates the Last of Us by virtue of hating another thing more?

I have seen all of one game use cover-based shooting well and that was Vanquish...which did so by showing how stupid it all is and how Sam was far more effective zipping around the battlefield as high speed turning enemies into shrapnel while only using cover for a quick breather.

What's that? Is Yahtzee reviewing an Xbox One exclusive during the weeks that a well reviewed title with historical connection to the Playstation and which is console exclusive to PS4 is being released? To instead focus on a title that is a port of a game of which we already knows his opinion?

Why, I ought to
respect his opinion on what is worthy of revewing.

I hope he will review MGSV soon though.

EDIT: Argh, he has already reviewed that title, making this post entirely pointless. Apologies for wasted time.

Stealth based cover shooter? I sure do love me some Deus Ex: Human Revolution. It's not exactly the size of a fridge, but I wouldn't be surprised if Adam has a beer cooler in there somewhere.
You can carry a fridge around, and then when spotted, drop the fridge and hide behind it. XD
It doesn't have to be a stealthy cover-based shooter; you can have Adam sneak up behind enemies and knock them out with Tasers and melee takedowns the whole way through. Which I think the game prefers you do because you earn more XP that way, so you gain more Praxis Points faster, unlock more upgrades, and kick more ass.

I, meanwhile, have seen a side-by-side comparison of the two versions of Gears of War and it's not pretty. The remake looks noticeably worse, as in it literally looks like the old one is the remake.

So naturally I couldn't find it when I tried to hunt it down and repost it.
They made the gray and brown much more gray and brown!

Hmm... I'm wondering if Gear's higher difficulties appearing to do nothing more than crank up enemy health and turn down player damage so drastically could have been an effect of Yahtzee overusing the Lancer? It's a half-decent weapon, but Gears really always tried to push you to the power weapons like the Gnasher and the Longshot and the Twerk Bow. Gears weapons also do pitiful damage on body shots, so there's that too.

Good review as usual. I'm wondering if somebody else on the forums could assist me. I've been watching a lot of ZP lately to try to find a joke he made in either one of his episodes or perhaps in some sort of bumper joke video.

He basically said "For fun, I've made this chart of how many people visit the Escapist on days other than Wednesday."

If anyone knows which it's from that would be appreciated, I've spent so much time looking lately that I'm having to fight off a British-Australian accent in conversation.

I know that there really is no point in trying to explain how he might have missed a bit of the point since in the end who gives a shit about some post from some random guy on a forum but I will still say it.

Gears of War does one thing really well and it is almost necessary in the harder difficulties, and that is flanking. The levels are usually made for it and the key isnt to pop out and shoot untill one of you dies but to flank the enemy and force him to be in the open without a chance to get into cover. That is the entire point of it. In a well balanced multiplayer match it does show that side of it too (when the team isnt full-on shotgun crazy), so yeah, the gameplay aspect works rather well as it asks the player to stop behind cover and think of how to force the enemy out of his by finding a safe path to a better position. Its basicly a puzzle.

And that was my small rant.

Technically Contra - The first one - did cover based shooting first. Though Kill.Switch was a pretty good romp as well.

Was going to make some clever comment about some other game that did cover-based shooting first, probably even before Kill Switch.

Googled it. The game was Kill Switch.
I would've said Winback released for N64 in 1999. First third person action game I can recall that there was a 'hug the wall' button. I guess Metal Gear Solid had it, but that was a 'covert action simulator' and not a 'cover based shooter'. And the shooting in MGS sucked, in Winback it actually worked halfway decently. And I think Dead to Rights, 2002, was released before Kill Switch as well.

And now that I think about it, I don't think the first MGS had a stick to wall, then fire from cover button. I'm thinking of MGS 2... my bad.

There's probably a couple of games that did it earlier, but the first one I really remember heavily relying on the mechanic was Kill Switch.

This is without counting games that simply incorporated a "lean" mechanic and required a lot of hiding around corners. Those go all the way back to Soldier of Fortune and even System Shock 1.

I don't see how cover systems make shooters worse. Okay, Gears of War doesn't give you much choice, but if you play e.g. Mass Effect on normal difficulty there's rarely any need to use the cover mechanics. People tend to hide behind walls to heal or gear up even in non-cover-based games. The difference is that cover mechanics allow you to do it like a boss [http://i2.wp.com/darkzero.co.uk/asset/2012/05/GRFS-1.jpg] and not a wimp [https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/0d/85/16/0d8516175b3f852531ede47f88310563.jpg].

Yes, we get it, Yahtzee. You don't like cover-based shooting. And about the big armor. So they're big boys. Really, who cares? When the game first came out, it was really unique and popularized the gritty dark theme. Furthermore, it polished cover-based third-person shooting. So like it or not, it was revolutionary. And Gears of War's story is one of desperation and war. Simple as that.

^ Also this. Honestly, this review sounded more whiny than anything.

Well maybe back in the days he and Epic made Jazz Jackrabbit, Cliff was worth defending but not here and now damnit!
Cliff wasn't responsible for that. He was, however, responsible for, IMO, a much better game. [http://www.gamespot.com/unreal-tournament-1999/]

Undertale review when.
I suspect SOMA is gonna be next and then Undertale. Or he might do both in the same review. He generally likes Frictionals games so I'm sure it's been on his Radar.
