As for taking pride in the old country, my suspicion is that it's more then that. In the mid-19th-century the Fenians (Irish living in U.S.) tried to invade Canada. I simply wonder how much that has to do with it. Judging by many Americans on the internet, I wouldn't be surprised if it's a fair bit.
Hey, don't put that squarely on us, the Newfs and the Nova Scotians were on board with that as well. The idea of a free Irish exile state carved out of eastern Canada had a lot of pull with Irish Americans and Irish Canadians. Unfortunately the Fenians were (just like always)not very subtle and not very organized.

Incidentally, I'm pretty sure threads like this are the reason my forebears left the old country in the first place.
Well, I can understand a desire to have a free Irish State, wherever it may be. What do you mean by "I'm pretty sure threads like this are the reason my forebears left the old country in the first place" though?

You know, there are skins in Team Fortress 2 that turn the Pyro's axe into a guitar and I'm sure there's some that turn the Spy and Medic into Nazis.

PS.
"My name is Pierre, I'm 53, I have come to have sex with your family"
"Help yourself sir, because of the debt of honor to General Lafayette"

You could make a better game when the outcome isn't know quite so clearly. Oh sure the Nazis lose, but the question is, does the main character and the known NPCs survive the war? Also, welcome to the aftermath, it may not be quite as rosy as you hoped. Sequel?
The trick there is that the characters have to be really compelling to make up for the lack of suspense in the overall plot. And as much as I wish it weren't so, not everyone writes characters that are that good.

Chaotic Neutral makes some points I have to agree with. Shooters are getting bland and repetitive.
And the most annoying part is that they don't have to be, there are several routes they could take that haven't been done to death yet. But the cliche is safe, so developers will keep beating a dead horse until enough people are mocking them for it rather than buying the product. There'll always be some audience for it though, the yearly numbered sports games and Zelda's update every other year proves that much.

Its not WWI and controversy surrounding it has lost Konami as a publisher but it sounds like it is/was supposed to be a psychological warfare game.

Those both look fairly interesting, and I'll check them out further. Thanks for the recs.

...I'll still like a straightup WWI psychological horror shooter though. I guess I can dream.

what you said about the irish is very offensive man, you show your british colours with this you fucking english ****
Funny how you mentioned "Offensive," yet proceed to call him a "fucking english ****."

Just thought that was quite humorous.

OT: This was an improvement from last week's Demon's Souls review, and I thoroughly enjoyed this one quite a bit.

I think those who are getting a little offended by the Irish comments need to grow some thicker skin, and/or acknowledge who it's coming from.

Can't take a joke? Stay out of the comedy club. Simple as that.
Bother your Arse to try and read some of the Posts in reply to that AFTER the first page, and you'll see it isn't QUITE as simple as that.

Yes, actually, it really is.

He gets offended because he felt he was being made fun of, being Irish.
He chooses to make fun of Yahtzee, and calls him an "English ****."

Hypocrisy ensues.

I don't care if his reasons for being offended were because the Irish were discriminated against by the English, or whatever other excuse there is.
You get offended? Don't go call somebody a name and potentially offend them.

An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.

Chaotic Neutral, a game designer friend of mine had the idea of a Napoleonic psychological horror. You have single shot weapons and are trying to defend a bridge in some awful haunted place in Russia. Put that idea on a game system and do it well and you will have a winner.

Perhaps loading becomes more difficult and takes longer depending on how cold you are and frightened. Increase the tension indeed. All sorts of terrors coming out of the snow, the river, the nearby woods. It would be excellent.

I remember a question a while ago among the internets about "why do Americans love the Irish?", and one Irish person was going on about how she had a couple nice American friends, and found the American interest in Ireland cute, but then said:

"I don't want to anger anyone, but Americans don't have a culture, the only real Americans are the Indians"

And I had to ask myself.. why DO we like the Irish again?

You didn't even bother your arse to read THAT post properly. What part of 'AFTER the first page' didn't you understand? I couldn't care less about whether megametawolf is offended or not. My point to you was that there are several reasons posted why Yahtzee's cliche'd jokes are innappropriate and You not caring still doesn't make this form of humour less offensive or more acceptable.

Also you're condemning racism on one hand, and yet defending racist humour on the other... you might want to give yourself a belt with that Hypocrisy stick you are waving at everyone.

Just thought I'd join this debate in hazyshadows' defence by saying
A)It's not that he didn't agree it was offensive, he just thought it was hypocritic to respond with an equally offensive post
B) There is a big difference between kidding and being serious, so there is nothing hypocritic about condemning racism but not condemning race humour.

Defending racism?

Nope, actually, I can just take a joke. Since Yahtzee (obviously) intended it to be comedic, I really feel that there is no need to be in a panic. Last I recall, he pokes fun at Americans in his Silent Hill: Homecoming review, and I didn't give a shit then, either.

Y'know why? I can take a fucking joke.

And, just so you know, before you berate me for not reading the proper post, please take the time to specify WHICH post you would like me to read. It can be very helpful in me fully understanding your viewpoint. Seeing as there are, as of right now, 11 pages proceeding after the first.

This review confirmed something that I'd suspected about the Saboteur. Basically, it's the Dante's Inferno of 2009. Sorry, that's a bit of an odd statement, let me elaborate:
Dante's Inferno is a God of War clone (without shame) released in early 2010. What it doesn't seem to grasp is that if I want to play God of War in early 2010, I'll play God of War 3. The same concept applies to the Saboteur. It's a third person stealth based sandbox game released at the tail end of 2009. If I want a third person stealth et.c game in the tail end of 2009, I'll play Assassin's Creed 2.
I suppose points could be given for setting or story, but if you cock-up your gameplay, that'll only carry you so far, especially since Hell and World War II are far from unexplored concepts.
