Killion watched as Johnny collapsed, but didn't get up. The others would do that.
"We didn't need to do that, Galt. We didn't have any reason to... Do that. We haven't been very efficient with our food anyways, we could have imprisoned him. It's not like we're staying here forever anyways, we'll need to break out of here eventually no matter what. This... The entire thing.... Just inhuman. We are not those creatures out there. We didn't know for sure it was him."

The group was in low spirits today. The heated emotions from last night's trial had washed away, leaving only guilt and shame. Some questioned the reasons behind Sigguard's exile. Galt could not afford to let dissent grow like this.

"Morality grows from one thing, our need to survive. Everything we do is governed by our need for self preservation. Allowing ourselves to be bogged down by a dangerous prisoner would have gotten us killed. These are serious times, we can't hurt ourselves just because it feels right. We've got to look out for number one here, and if that means killing psychotics, then we'll do it."

Galt's oratory is cut short by Johnny's entrance. The man's collapse draws quite a crowd. Galt rushes over by Rain to look at the body.

"What on Earth was he thinking? Looks like he just smashed his fist into whatever looked hard. Rain, get him wrapped up and keep an eye on him. I can't have everyone going around mutilating themselves."

Laura leaped from the floor and grabbed Shaz's shoulder, turning him around to face her. "How dare you?!" she yelled. "I was comforting him! I said it wasn't Sigguard!" she made a bit of a face, tilting her head, and said, "I voted for the other guy!" She let go of him and moaned. She peered at the door again, and then her eyes hunted for his, and when they met, she spoke. "You got one thing right. Living is the most important; it gives you time to find out what you're living for."

"She has a point, Shaz." Al commented. "Regardless of what we believe, we need to stay alive." He paused, thinking back to his hellish trek from Manhattan to here. "We've got to do whatever we can to stay alive and get to the Reddeker Line. I know I will."

"Death is... a sad thing. Believe me, I know, but we can't afford to let this divide us. I can't shake the feeling that we just sacrificed an innocent, a friend, and I'm almost certain that someone here is laughing inside right now at having their work made easier. But we must move on, death is inescapable now, and far worse has become possible. None of us want to be one of those things out there. It's hard enough admitting we bear ANY relation to them. It's our job, our duty, to survive. To stop these things, or whatever form of vile, violent human does manage to beat these things down, from becoming the definition of humanity. Sure, We've done some pretty bad things in the past, but we've still achieved a lot as a species. No longer are we the barbarians we once were. We need to carry not only our flesh, but our minds into the future at all costs. A little barbarism now is worth it if it will stop the inevitable centuries of barbarism in the future if the last of civilization fails."

Killion takes out a plain pipe from his back pocket and begins to smoke it, blowing smoke rings up to the ceiling.

Visibly calmer, he whispers to himself- "Been a while since I did this... I wish you were here, Braden..."

"I've been thinking... I mean, even if we got the killer, what really are our chances of getting out of here? We might still all end up like Sigg's no matter how compassionate or diplomatic we are. I don't think all the empathy in the world would help us get out of here," He shot a glance at Dane, "By killing Sigguard we might of just delayed the inevitable, but hey, at least I won't ever get old and full of wrinkles, right?" He wore the unhappiest smile possible.

The last of his cigarettes burned down and he dropped it on the small pile of boxes and butts that had amassed. "I'm feeling lucky at the moment, anybody want to help me find some more smokes?"

"There's a store near here. Has plenty.... But you knew that, I'm thinking. In truth, I wouldn't mind some revenge right now, but I feel it would be misplaced. The Zombies may kill Sig, but they aren't truly responsible. I'd like to secure the rest of the mall, or at least another plaza, at some point... But not now. Revenge cannot be attained. Now is for grieving."

Killion wandered off, not bothering to say where he was going.

Maeror hung his head low, ignoring the bottle of fairly weak liquor in front of him.
"Look at me, the one who said that survival by any means necessary was important, broken up over one death...looks like they got my balls when they blew off my arm..."

Rain tended to Johnny's body.

"Come on guys. That was bullshit last night! So what if he killed a guy, couldn't we lock him away? What if he wasn't the killer? What then?"

Rain turned to Maeror. Who was pissed off his face and spurting out comments.

"Hey, I've seen dead bodies in my time and I've had to make a few hard decisions, but actually killing a guy is different. How can you survive if you go around killing off everybody?""

"Killing and survival are not mutually exclusive, Rain. Sig was a hazard and a liability. If we were to ever make it to the Rockies, he'd have been a stumbling block, in this situation, we can't afford such a risk. His medication was finite, even more so due to the fact that it was wasted in such a manner. I cannot put our safety in jeopardy for him."

"What about me, Galt?! I have one arm! I'm your biggest liability! What are you going to do? Shoot me?!"

"So, what? That's it? You'll happly take a life because his supply of prescription medication will run out? We're in a fucking shopping center. There's bound to be a drug store here!
(I'm assuming it's empty of zombies like in Dawn of the Dead?!)
What about Maeror? He seems to be trigger happy. Why not off him now. Or Laura? Or you?"

"Why not, Rain? Everyone's getting a taste for blood and adrenalin. This feels like a game of russian roulette. Exciting, isn't it?"

"I don't understand why we're doing this," Laura said, beleaguered and consternated and downright unhappy. "What use is arguing now? It's too late. We didn't speak up when we had the chance and now Sigguard is... out there. Unless you can show that someone else is definitely the murderer or you are willing to go out and rescue him, all this is is a dick measuring contest with a 'holier than thou' twist."

Gremlin loped over to the group, eyes alight with anger. He stopped a few metres shy and shouted "You there! Duck!" and hurled his axe towards them. It sliced through the air over their heads as they ducked or flat out hit the ground to avoid it. A few seconds later it clanged harmlessly on the ground. Gremlin surveyed the group as they got back up, all looking like they wanted to kill him. He laughed, and spoke again. "You see? You can listen if you need to! That's why you all still have your heads, yes? You listened to Gremlin and ducked! Now stop being so thick-headed and stupid, and try actually listening to each other for a change! We are human, we have survived this far and I am not going to watch our hopes and dreams go down the toilet because you can't help but stand around screeching at each other like banshees!" He collected his axe, and flopped down in disgust.

"As much as I hate to say it, Gremlin's right, this argument will get us nowhere. Now, I figure we've got about another month or so worth of food and water, and only about another week of useful barricades if these break ins don't let up. Therefore, I think we can all agree that another shelter will be necessary. I want everyone to find as much food and water as possible, clean the stores out. Once we get an inventory, we'll try and board one of those buses out in the parking lot. Hell, there might even be a few delivery vans in the storage tunnels if we can find our way in. We should be able to get through the remnants of the horde pretty easily, much of it seems to have moved on. Once we're clear of the leftover zeds, we hole up in the National Guard base down the highway."

A few hours after he had left, Killion heard a crackle from his radio. It was Galt. "We're moving out soon, gather up as much stuff as you can. Oh, and Killion.... No booze alright?"
Killion replied "Yeah, I thought we might be leaving soon, I've been getting ready. I found some interesting stuff in the security room. A beating-stick and a mob-shield it looks like. Could be useful. Interested?"
