*Andy dropped out of a vent into a corridor and whirled around, checking for signs of life. The corridor appeared to have been brightly lit at one time, but now only one of the flurescent tubes was even remotely operational. It flickered eerily at the other end of the corridor*

"..."

*She headed towards the light. The entire complex appeared deserted, but possibly there was something, anything, that could hint at what had occured in this place*

I'm not even sure what drew me to explore this place. It's quite obviously deserted and.. quite creepy actually. Not that I'm scared. Of course not, I've seen worse

*Andy jumped as she heard a loud, yet muffled sound. It sounded uncannily like an explosion. She jumped again as she noticed a figure walking - no, shambling - towards her. The manner of it's gate would be enough to unnerve most people in broad daylight, but in the flickering glow of the last remaining flurescent tube... it was much worse*

*Brandishing a length of pipe that had been oh so useful for getting into the ventilation system, Andy marched purposefully along the corridor*

Evidently this place wasn't quite as empty as I thought it was...

Samuel woke from his lethargic state. Last hours he had been on auto-mode, following the road. The dog had broken eye-contact with him a small time ago. Samuel had heard some words. Infect was one of them.

He saw a body at the side of the road. It was a zombie. It had been punctured by bullets and tracks of a jeep were next to it. Not far away from it was another one. This one had his head smashed and limbs broken. Evidence of a car crashing through a group of zombies.

He saw the reflection of his one headlight in one of the bodies. It was a knife, probably a silver one. The dog barked again, and Samuel lurched...

[Shift]

High-mane looked at the pup. He seemed enthralled by the moonlight. How could he not, it was beautiful. His rage about his cub's death was lifted. His other cubs were opposed to this adoption. They demanded the pup's blood. He showed them theirs. They backed down after High-Mane had attacked them. It was painful to hirt his own cubs, but it was needed.

He barked the other wolves away and beckoned the young pup to follow him. With a dazed grin, he did. The light had calmed him, soothed his rebelious spirit. This was his home, and not with the flesh-beings.

He led them through the halls of his fathers palace. It was a deserted Flesh-being home, but High-Mane's father had seized it after they had broken out of the accursed burrow. They had to share the burrow with some kind of lizard, but no longer. This was their sanctuary now.

They walked into a great room, and High-Mane let the pup kneel in front of an altar, on which a pure beam of moonlight shone. The pup was still calm. Good.

The other wolves entered the room....

[Sparrow could not think straight, not that he wanted to. He only cared for the moon's light glow now. He was entranced by the altar. Nothing else mattered now. Nobody else mattered anymore.]

[Shift]

[The dog stood back on his four paws. These human seats were uncomfortable.

The human seemed dazed, most likely from the lack of sleep. Or possibly, conversation. The human could understand him, he figured. They would have no got this far if he did not. He decided to try and strike up conversation.]

The boy. Sparrow you call him. How is it you know him?

Samuel looked at the dog. It looked like it was making small talk with him. Positive that he was losing his mind, he tried to answer.

"We met in LA...a city far to the west of here." With every word he spoke, he felt more and more insane.

"He was a broadcaster, and we met by accident really. He got infected not far from here actually. Bitten by what I think was a wolf."

Ah. That makes perfect sense.

[The dog looked at Sam once more. He seemed un-easy.]

I know this is strange for you, human, so feel free to ask any questions you feel need be. I have nothing to hide..

Samuel shifted on the leather seat. He started speaking again.

"Well...how-...Why can you speak, or I understand you? And why is Sparrow gone?"

He drove around another pile of bodies. The patrols were busy tonight. He heard the constant gunfire of turrets and explosions far away. Perhaps the full moon agitated the zombies as well as the wolves.

[The dog was amused. It almost seemed as if he had smirked.]

I do not know why you can understand me. Infact, it intrigues me that you can. Your very interesting for a human, you know. Most of you are quite boring.

[The dog put his front paws on the car's dashboard, so he could see above it.]

As for your friend, well. A beast called High-Mane took him. No doubt you've heard of the creature. His interest in the boy worried me at first, but I was simply being over protective. That boy is no wolf, you see. High-Mane will have no control over him.

Samuel frowned. No wolf? That couldn't be true. He had seen Sparrow change, seen the wolf within him. He told the dog, still feeling very ridiculous, that Sparrow had changed, and was infected with the venom of a wolf.

The dog seemed to shake its head, or something like that. Samuel wasn't an expert in the expressions of an animal.

And the fact that High-Mane had taken Sparrow was reason for concern. The wolf at the station had the same markings on its body as him, so that meant that there was a connection, perhaps even family. It was cause for concern. Sparrow probably killed it, and High-Mane took him for revenge, or lure Sparrow's friends in a trap.

*Andy descended yet another flight of stairs. The sounds of fighting were louder now, puctuated occasionally by the explosions she had heard from above. Ironically, it made the complex seem less frightening*

Probably, hopefully, there's someone alive in this place and they're fighting these zombies. Maybe they'll have supplies, a plan, something that's kept them going for so long. I could use some of that - this pipe is getting heavier by the minute. I daren't put it down though, what with the zombies at every turn...

...

I just hope they don't try to shoot me by accident

*Turning to where the noise was loudest, Andy sighed*
More vents...

[The dog couldn't help but observe the human to the extent that he was obsessed. He'd never been wrong before. Never. He was certain the boy had the right scent. He then realised he had not been completely listening, and caught on to the end of the human's sentance.]

"...Sparrow had changed. He was definately infected with the venom of a wolf. I know it."

[The dog shook his head. He thought that he should tell the human, but he decided against it. He was ready to respond, when he picked up the scent. He quickly turned to the human.]

We're here.

We're here

Samuel stopped the Jeep. There were in the middle of nowhere. Just an old abandoned library. The windows were broken, the doors hung of their hinges and the walls were almost destroyed by the many years of wind and water beating on it.

"We're where, exactly?"

The dog jumped out of the Jeep. Samuel grabbed his crossbow and a pair of Handguns he had 'borrowed' from that Duke character. He wouldn't miss them. Probably. The dog padded inside the library. Samuel noticed many padded footprints in the dust and sand. Probably wolvish. The scratched in the wood weren't random, as he first expected, but had a certain pattern about them. He stroked them with his fingertips.

The Dwellers

Samuel's eyes widened. He could read them. He could see the patter and identify the word. This was freaking him out. He looked inside the library and saw that it was dark, really dark. He turned his Flashlight on and looked around the building. No wolves, good. He held his Crossbow readly and thanked Clirck in his throught for the silver bolts he had made.

[The dog walked on, cautiously. He sniffed the air, for what seemed like the 100th time that day. He signaled to the human.]

They're up ahead. All of them. In one room. It almost seems as if they're having some sort of ceremony. No doubt High-Mane's doing.

[The dog was un-sure how they should continue. Obviously they could not take them all. And if they got too close, they would smell the human. However, they would simply think he was one of their own. He was a dog after all. He tried to convey this to the human.]

How should we proceed?.

Samuel doubted. Taking on High-Mane, and the rest of the clan...group with only his weapons and the dog would be suicide. He would be torn apart before he had made it to Sparrow. Driving the Jeep inside was out of the question. It was their only way out, if they made it out. On the other hand, it he couldn't get to Sparrow they couldn't 'get out.'

Then an idea slid into his mind. An idea so outlandish, so crazy it was almost out of the question. But it had the best chance of succes. He decided that it couldn't hurt to ask.

"Dog, could you infect me? Make me as a wolf?"

[The dog stared directly into the human's eyes.]

I'd love nothing more than to infect you, human. I only pick a select few, but I must warn you. You will not become a wolf. It may seem a bit outlandish, but you will become a dog. Not litterally of course, but you will have our qualities.

My infection is stronger than that of a wolf's. You will retain both your personality, body and mind. You will become more reliant on your instincts though. You will also be able to sneak into this complex undetected. Dog's and wolf's scent's are extremely similar, so much so you cannot tell them apart.

Are you sure you want to do this?

Samuel was confused. He kept his voice down, to hide from the wolves. The growls and chanting of them was an ominous sound. Constantly reminding him of the mass of fur, teeth and claws standing somewhere inside the buidling.

"So what are you then? If you've got this different stem of the infection?"

Samuel thought about the infection he would get. His daughter, and wife, how would they see him after he'd be a feral beast.

But no, no I'd be a concious infected. Samuel thought. And I'm not leaving Sparrow behind

"Yes, I'm sure. Do it."

I shall tell you what I've told those before.

I am nor wolf, nor dog. I am nor mortal, nor dead. I am an entity you would not understand.

[And with that, the dog beconed the human to kneel. Then, he sunk his teeth into the human's neck. The process was painless, and instantly effective.]

[Seems like Zapp's got the Radiation Madness. Run away!]

Samuel drifted into a place where no feeling or emotion existed. He didn't feel anything. He did notice some changes to his body. He could see his nose very clearly, and his hind legs seemed thicker, more powerful. He didn't think about it. He just let it slide away.

Then he felt the gritty floor beneath his feet. He smelled the wolves inside. He heard the breathing of his dog companion. He tasted the dust that drifted in the building. He felt something behind him. He turned, but saw nothing. It was still behind him. He turned again, but there was again nothing. He looked at his back, and saw a tail.

A bloody tail. I have a bloody tail.

Then he noticed the changes to his body. He felt his iron-hard muscles, his steel tendons, his heigthened hearing. He could sense the wolves inside the building, he could smell the distinct smell of Sparrow, just a tad different from the wolves.

He grinned at the dog.

Thank you, He said. He got on all fours and ran through the building.
