"Ryan...Are you feeling any different? Any weird feelings? Hold on." She took a small torch from the first aid kit on the side and shone it into his eyes.
His pupils weren't reacting.
Holy shit...

Ivan came up to him. "Mind if i take a small skin sample? i promise it won't hurt much." Ryan nodded his head. Ivan took a very small sample and compared it to his underneath a powerful microscope. "Holy... shit. Adries, take a look at this!"

"Take. A. Look. At. This!" Alan replied, cheering up the room with the joke. Adries took a moment to compose herself after laughing and walked over. "Alright, what am I looking at?" she asked, looking into the microscope.

"Look at the cells i took from Ryan. his sample is on the left. now compare it to mine. the cells have all shriveled and died, yet the black tainted ones are still moving! Somehow, his cells are at the same time dead and alive! and these are his skin cells, which are natually dead. i wonder what the nerve cells look like..." He noticed Ryan edging away from him. "Oh no, don't worry, i wouldn't take them."

"I don't know what you said but I take it is very important and interesting," Adries replied, still looking at the cells. Alan typed what Ivan had said. 'I could probably get a lot more info then they can if I could look at them. Best not though. I'll have time later,' he thought to himself.

"This virus is getting better at what it does. If we don't figure this out fast I think we are going to start seeing more of Ryan out there, and they won't be friendly." He stood there silently for a moment eyes wide.

"The military won't see it coming. Imagine just ten of them moving toward the barricade, completely normal until they hit the scanners. They'll think they are simply infected and try to shoot them, but the infected will turn into Ryan's more powerful form. Just ten of them acting in unison will wipe out the entire hospital. Containment will be broken and the virus will...spread to a point where it becomes uncontainable."

Lisa had proceeded to give him some aspects of a physical, which continued to baffle her. His reflexes and response time were fine as was his replies to everything she asked, but other than that, he could've been classified as legally dead.
"This is...amazing." She muttered, feeling his wrist again, trying to find even the slightest beat of a pulse in case she missed it.

Adries went over to Alan and started up a conversation. Alan was writing down more notes, looking over at Ryan every few sentences.

"You know what's happening?"
"For the most part. This is certainly an isolated case. Everyone is affected in different ways from the virus. Everyone is affected, but early test showed cases of mutations such as this. Those ones were supposed to be our weapons. Everyone else just became zombies. It's an extremely rare case. We figured it would be a one in a ten million chance. I think that's all I'll tell you."
"I was just curious."

"The next step in evolution realized. A creature with the full range of action and thought of a human with none of the decay and mortality. This is both amazing and horrific, anyone who would do this is playing god. Not unlike the alchemists of old, trying to use mercury to grant immortality. Unfortunately, the results of this are just promising enough that man will do this again. This proves it, we must get those notes to the public so that this will never happen again."

Adries and Alan exchanged quick glances at one another. "Yeah," Alan said, closing the file and turning off the computers. "I'm set to go," he said, pulling out a hard drive and putting it into his pocket, "Wait, no I still need a gun."

"We have a bit of everything," Adries said, pointing him to the storage cabinet with guns.

Jack walked over to Alan.

"I apologize that is probably a sore subject, and it was not my intention to reprimand. I know not the full intentions of your work, and I will not pretend to. My only concern is that someone else will take the risks. Even you must admit that your science is young, we have only recently mapped the human genome and epigenome. Only recently have your scientists found out exactly what human genes do. As I said earlier, even my science is a series of mistakes corrected and built upon. Though I think now we may both agree that some mistakes we should not even attempt to correct, and are best left to history. I just wish to see that this mistake is one of those."

Alan just nodded as he picked up two pistols. "Yeah, I know what you mean. It's cool," he replied, tucking the pistols into two shoulder holsters that he took. "I think we're ready to go," Adries said with a testy voice, "Unless we're going to keep looking at cells under a microscope."

Jack nodded his head in a small bow.

"Oh I almost forgot to ask if you had ever hacked into the city's traffic camera system. A little intel on whether the barricade is still standing and how many zombies we are fighting will probably come in handy. Don't you think so? Then again hacking into a CCTV signal may not be very high on your pre-apocalypse to do list."

"I did, but they stopped working within the hour I hacked it. I guess the cities power gave out and the cameras weren't a priority," Alan replied.

"I can always try again, but it would take me awhile. I think going there would be faster."

"I have to agree, I was only asking in case they still worked. If they aren't working we shouldn't waste any survival time to it." Jack started to head for the door. Looking at his message to Adries he said.

"I'm going to change the recipient to that once we get back. To Biotechnology from Physics. The torch of world destruction has been passed."

 

[tsatoma]

"Yay, glad to see it doesn't mean me anymore," Adries said, still in a crappy mood, "Are we taking the hummer again? I don't think we'll need many supplies."

"Oh the message will still read Et tu, Brute Adries. Its just that in the twentieth century it was physics and the atomic bomb that was to destroy the world. That warning I was giving to you, now goes to the entire science of biotechnology. The science that will destroy the world with genetic manipulation. Has kind of a ring to it, no wonder Hollywood jumped all over it." Jack playfully mused as the walked along.

 

[tsatoma]

"Whatever," Adries muttered as they walked out of the school into the parking lot. There were no zombies in view, and there was an eerie feel in the air. Alan said something about it raining in a bit, and that there will probably be a big storm tonight.

"More sense to go and get this done now," Adries said, looking at the sky as she walked to the hummer.

Lisa shivered as she got to the car, was it her or was it cold? She considered going back for a jacket but instead She got into the driver's seat and turned on the ignition, then fiddling with some buttons to get the heater on.
"Okay, you direct, i'll drive." She said turning the headlights on.

Hayley snapped awake, she was sure she'd heard someone yelling her name, but when she looked around the room was empty.
"Gee thanks guys, leave me behind." She said, stretching her arms.
"Guess I'll hold the fort here then."
