She said nothing for a moment, the feeling of resentment returning but non-the-less Christie replied cooly.
"Apology accepted. Although the ends did justify the means in your case, doesn't mean it didn't hurt like a *****. Inadvertently, that bullet altered the whole outcome of how far things went. It's strange to consider...Hm. Well, my chances of surviving seem to be changing daily, I don't put my faith in him. I put my faith in whatever has been keeping me around now. I can tell you that no Bixler has been keeping me alive and they probably never will." She shook her head with certainty at that.
"Tell me, do you really believe that all humanity is worthless? Or just any humanity you've encountered so far?"

Jack contemplated his answer.

"Everyone I have met but you and your sister has been dishonest, subtly selfish, and unwilling to do anything that does not enhance their own survival. They do these things even if it means someone else must die so they might live, so I would say the humans worth saving died long ago. The people who dedicated their lives to others were the first to go, leaving only neutral people and garbage. Even the military, who I thought many of whom dedicated their lives to the protection of their people, are subtly manipulating or being manipulated to serve the manipulators ends.

If there is any humanity worth saving I do not see it. The only person who I have met who is innocent is your sister, and one human does not a species make. One lamb will not survive in a land of lions, and so sooner or later she will die or be infected. Humanity will not lament the loss of the only truly free and innocent human being left, even though they should. Not to say you aren't someone who should be held in high esteem, but even you must admit your sister is an innocent human being. I think Hippocrates himself would be proud of her for abiding by his rules to medicine." Jack responded.

"I do indeed admit that she's innocent and even though we won't ever see eye to eye and quite frankly I hate her guts, I'm proud of what she is. I know that if there was a choice between her life and someone else, she'd give hers. If she and someone else was dying, she'd give the last moments to save the other person. She truly cares about people. It's both endearing and sickening...But what you've said is true, although she's probably the last selfless and good hearted person left, She won't survive forever." Christie responded, feeling strange discussing her sister in such a way.
"I might add one thing. Compared with my older superiors and Kaufman, he seems to care more about the public and attempting to fix this. Sometimes manipulation can't be avoided, but i believe he's manipulating for what seems to be the better. I doubt you'd agree but compared to what the original plans were, believe me, it's better. "

"I don't doubt that in terms of survival it is better, but in terms of freedom we'll agree to disagree. To forever serve the Bixler masters because they are the only powerful people left strikes me as an end to freedom of choice. Alan and Kaufman are perfect examples of this, they control the military and scientific research in this, and they will only allow things to be done their way. I would rather die of my own free will than live under another man's heel for the rest of my days. Even to die by another's sword without my consent is preferable to living under that same person. These people who care more about there own safety are the sheep that will ensure the Bixlers rule over whatever is left of the world. I believe it was Franklin who said 'They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety'. Since I cannot fight against them, I refuse to live under them." Jack said calmly before pausing for a few seconds.

"The zombies are the only ones who can stop the Bixlers and your superiors both. They will inherit this Earth and survive long after we have passed. The ancient stone and zombies will be the only things left of a world once ruled by man, they will be our history. Ultimately though, they will be our legacy, the leftovers of a tail of hatred, selfishness, and greed that led to our downfall. Steel, paper, and glass will be gone with time, but they will remain. They bleed and move but never age, their bodies will never fail them, and they shall be until this earth sees its last day. It is unfortunate, but they will be all that is left of humanity when the dust settles. Even nuclear hellfire engulfing the planet will not stop them, and they shall emerge victorious as the new rulers of this Earth."

Christie remained silent, a chill had ran up her spine from what he had said. For once, she had nothing she could say or argue back. He'd said something that was so undeniable, it had left her speech-less. She exhaled slightly turning into the car park of the Baskerville Offices. She parked directly outside the area they'd been in days before.

"I'm glad to see you understand and agree. Good to know at least one other person sees through the lies and can understand the truth of it all." Jack said as still handcuffed he climbed out of the jeep and walked toward the building.

"So the beginning of your hunt for me is where it ends, it's rather fitting if I do say so myself."

"Thank you, I thought so too. You can go ahead inside. I have a few supplies to consider first." Christie replied, getting out and going to the trunk. The area was pretty much deserted, a few bodies were outside the building they'd been long dead.

"Of course, same place where I shot you? Just to bring it completely full circle." Jack said as he moved towards the doors.

"If you want." Christie called back before considering the arsenal she'd got together. She hadn't thought about anything too definite on how she'd do it. She moved a hand over a series of stolen melee weapons with hesitation before grabbing another taser she'd found. This one was stronger, lethal enough if used correctly.
She swapped the tasers, taking a nightstick in case the urge struck her to use it then heading back towards the entrance.

Jack waited until Christie was behind him to continue moving again. He looked over what she had brought in.

"I see you are feeling rather creative but still to the point, I figured you would have wanted to prolong this as much as possible. That or something involving some form of blade like a bowie knife or hell even a sword knowing you." Jack said before turning and walking.

"I am a firm believer in history always being cyclical. My theory has gained weight with me when Alan told me something akin to this happened before and the military had the response of covering it up, it would be only fitting then that you would kill me in the room where I nearly killed you and you planned to kill Alan. Just remember what I said earlier and what you are giving up by working with Bixler, and how one day if you survive and are inoculated you will owe Alan your very life. You will owe Alan your life and Kaufman your loyalty, and you will have lost all freedom because of this. Freedom lost to simply become a servant of that which I plan to lose my life escaping from, and I hope you find yourself able to sleep at night with that knowledge of all you have lost with your loyalty and greed. You will have power though, but that power will run through the Bixlers, remember that." Jack said before walking up the stairs and into the room where they had held Alan in.

"...They took my bowie knife from me. I don't feel this blade would do justice." Christie replied simply, pointing the to her knife holster, then looking down to notice some of her own dried bloodstains on the ground.
"I will indeed remember it. I have my loyalty to Kaufman, but i won't ever owe Alan so much as a pen than my life. I'll give my self-respect before my freedom so easily. I'm selfish, mercenary and loyal to those who aren't exactly saints, but i've come to accept that and i sleep quite peacefully. You're going to be truly free but my own sense of freedom is still existent and won't die until long after i've ceased." She spoke calmly, releasing the handcuffs and checking a filing cabinet in the far corner.

Jack chuckled at that.

"If you get inoculated to survive, and Alan is the one who researched it and found it, who do you owe your immunity to? If you get bitten and that immunity is the only thing that kept you from being a zombie, who do you owe you survival to? If you had become a zombie and been killed by your former teammates, who do you owe your life to? The answer is Alan, and you will owe him much more than you think. If you take orders from Kaufman, who is himself a Bixler mind you, who do work for? If that Bixler tells you to jump for power and you say how high, your freedom has been lost. You will give yourself an illusion of freedom, but you will always be under him, and you will never be truly free."Jack walked to the center of the room.

"So are you actually free at all, or do you just let yourself think you're free as you take your orders from your masters?"

"Isn't freedom an illusion in the first place? I heard from a man years ago that from the minute we're born, we lose our real freedom. From that point on, we strive on what we believe is as freedom. If i wasn't free, my choices wouldn't exist. I wouldn't be standing here. Kaufman has indeed saved me from the wastes where I would certainly die when i ran out of either ammo or alcohol and yes, I take orders and yes, the idea of having power is something that can sway me. But, I'm forgetting my point, i know where my boundaries are, when you bark like a trained dog at any command, you've lost it." She started, going to another filing cabinet.

"Just so you know, Alan won't give me a inoculation willingly, and if I'm still kicking when it's done, i'll be the last to receive it if not at all. That doesn't faze me in the slightest. He did offer to make me up one of the virus for myself though." Christie smirked.

"You lose it at birth yes, but it can be regained. In a climate like this where order did not exist, I was free. I had full right to make my own decisions at any point, and I did. When I was alone, I did things for my own reasons, is that not free? I bowed to no man but myself, was I not free? What will you do once this is over and Kaufman can literally control every moment of your life, where will any sense of freedom be? You think he will honestly let you roam free at all? What choices do you really have after killing me? What will you have left?

As soon as you become inoculated however unwilling Alan may be, you will owe him your life simply for his research. Remember Christie salute the rank, not the man. The same comes to kneeling, and you will kneel before Alan with your very existence. You may resist it, but it will be nonetheless true."

The thought of kneeling in any sense before Alan, sparked an instance of anger within her.
"Never. I will never do such a thing. I'll turn my gun on myself before that. That spineless, waste..." She growled before composing herself again.
"If you must know, I already have nothing left. Freedom is all I have. But what other choices do I have after this, if you suggest I'm going to lose it? My superiors will find me, imprison me, torture me then kill me if not before the infected do, if i decide to do this alone. And then they'll look at my tracking data, find Alan and oh look, no inoculation for anyone. What I've got at the base, is better than the latter."

"You will learn in time that you have much more to lose than you know. I just hope you learn this before it is lost. Now infect me when before you enact your plan to kill me, I wish not to experience this world as a human anymore." Jack said before grabbing a chair and sitting in the center of the room.

Christie replied with silence, her mind working over what he'd said, before finding a pen and a few sheets of paper triumphantly. She placed it beside him before going over to the side of the room and removing the vial. She took the syringe, extracting every last drop and flicking the needle.
"Any final things you'd like to say? Messages you want to pass on?"

Ugh. Sorry about leaving so suddenly last night. I fell asleep in the middle of working on my assignment XO!

((No problem, sorry about returning so late. Thanksgiving takes forever, all that cooking and cleaning for a fifteen minute meal. The food is great though, so I guess its worth it.))

"As Voltaire said, 'Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies'." Jack said as he rolled up his sleeve and put the pen to the paper, ready to write.

"There are two ways this can work," Christie started, turning and watching the pen work on the paper, wary of the needle but also considering the best and easiest way to inject him,
"The infection can happen before or after. I'm more in favor for the after for certain advantages."

Ah no problem, I heard it was Thanksgiving today. Glad to hear you had a good time.

"Well my lesser vote goes to before, if only so I am left with the ability to write. I assume my arms and face will not be spared your wrath, and it becomes hard to write if I can't see or move my hand to form the letters necessary. I figure the small amount of effort you put into finding this pen and paper should not be wasted by my death. Besides, after I'm dead, I can't really become a zombie, viruses can't infect if my veins no longer flow." Jack said as he had written the lead up to his actual observations. He stopped the pen and held it just over the paper, ready to start writing once he had been infected.

((Yea it wasn't too bad, mowing our large backyard has me drained of all energy though. So I'm not going to be moving much tonight. Again, food was great though.))
