Zombie MMO for xbox

I stumbled across a newly founded development studio, Undead Labs, whilst reasearching for another thread. They make the rather bold claim that they plan to make the "the definitive zombie-survival game for console gamers". Being rather skeptical I read through their blog, and it certainly does sound intresting. They plan to release two games, the first code named 'Class 3', and the second 'class 4' (This is a reference to Max brooks' <link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Zombie_Survival_Guide>Zombie Survival guide. They know their stuff, and seem driven just as much by their love for zombies as developing games). Class 3 is set to be an XBLA game (and not an MMO), and they're using it to test the ideas, so they can collect feedback and use this to perfect their next title, Class 4. Class 4 will be a full retail release exclusive to the xbox, and feature a persistent online world.

Every time I see a good zombie movie with friends, we spend days debating our strategies for surviving the zombie apocalypse. The police station, or the supermarket? Garden rake, or staple gun? Bach, or the White Stripes? I?m a game developer, so I?d probably be useless for anything other than ghoul bait, but I?m excited to have the opportunity to build an MMOZ that lets us put those strategies to the test and find out for sure.

Their philosophy whilst developing this game seems to be less a massive team of developers, and more a closely knit team of industry experts. Now the game is still pre-release, and we only have concept art to go on at the moment but I think this has the makings to be an excellent game. There are several things I'm skeptical of though, most notable of which is their insistance on making an Xbox exclusive title. Especially for an MMO it seems an odd choice not to include the PC, but they claim that this will help them to create a much better console title, rather then spend time coding for different platforms.

What are your thoughts? Any features you'd like to see? outraged by the lack of a PC version?

I'm... skeptical. I mean, a console exclusive downloadable MMO? Those words don't mix well.

I can only see it working if it plays like a smooth FPS.

Which it won't.

Will most probably suck.

Well since the PC is already well oversaturated with MMOs (and yes there is a zombie mmo as well) I don't blame them for putting it strictly on a platform that has what? 2 mmos? Neither one of which is exclusive.

Personally, I can't wait. It'd be pretty awesome if it was a FPS/RPG hybrid along the lines of Borderlands of Fallout. Then I'd love it.

What zombie MMOs are there?

Rather sick of all these zombie games to be honest. I've never been intrested in them in the first place, but now it seems like they are the new fanchise that everybody wants a piece of.

Anyways... That they limit it to console will probably be it's downfall. I for one hate playing multiplayer on console, and speaking through microphones isn't my thing due to both having a dark voice and a tendency to speak very fast.
MMO's should be on computers!

I've checked o9ut Dead Frontier -- there are four people working on that game (maximum; I think they may even be lying abotu that), they use google sketchup to do the artwork (a shit programme for this stuff), continually claim to have made an alpha of the game when they haven't, etc. The list of lies and failrues by the Dead Frontier team is staggering. Its all a big joke.

There's much more Zombie MMO's but none of them are worth mentioning, and to all of those who think it'll fail because it's not on the PC: Could you be any more single minded? You guys are trying to say that there is absolutely NO chance that the game would work just because you don't use a keyboard and mouse?

I'm beginning to tire of all of the PC gaming elitists on The Escapist forums!
I for one, prefer consoles for most genres, maybe I enjoyed Halo Wars, that was because it was simple enough and fun enough for me to play without knowing all of the RTS strategies.

Enough of the "OmG it's an MMO that's not on the PC it will most certainly fail!"

OT: I think this sounds great, can't wait to give it a try!

I can't really see an MMO working well on a console. In my mind, it would work just as well as an RTS on a console, Halo Wars to me, was just awful. To be fair, i don't think there is any place for a zombie MMO, mostly because i think its a shit premise.

It will be interesting to see a MMO game on a console. I don't honestly think I have seen a title that lives up to terms of MMO. I don't feel like the game doesn't have a chance if you do not have a keyboard and mouse, but I do believe that they will have a hard time creating a MMO without a keyboard and mouse, and that the effort needed is going to be significantly more than that of a PC MMO.

Well I guess since everyone (except Choose a Username and I) seem to think it is doomed suck anyways I guess that puts it on par with the PC zombie MMOs you already have. So why release it in an oversaturated market?

The war time FPS genre is over saturated but is still milked and probably will be milked for a long time. The only way the game is doomed is if they do not realize that previous methods have not always worked and that you need to think outside the box and be able to invest a lot of time and money into the game. I personally think that an engine similar to or that of the one being used in Battlefield 3 would be a very smart choice in a Zombie game. If I could get my hands on that engine I would probably make a zombie apocalyptic game but without such an engine and my choice of using Unity for my gaming engine, I don't think I would pursue such a game.

Not sure it will work. I won't waste money on Class 3, but Class 4 might turn out fine if the dev team fixes everything they will probably fuck up in the first game. Not trying to judge them too harshly on something that has not been released, but the concept of a MMO on XBLA is not one that I see working.

It's unlikely to make it to the XBox if there's a subscription model, so I'm curious how they're doing things.

I also hears something about an zombie-apocalypse/survivor-MMO but only on one of MovieBob's shows.
can say that I personally LOVE the idea but if its only for xbox in the end Im gonna rage x( dont have anything against xbox (im not like every fanboy sitting around claiming this or that is better the the other -.-) it that I just dont have one. so making such an awesome game idea xbox exclusive is just cruel Q.Q

guess it would have great impact on PC (or dear I say, MAC OoO) if it jus stays away from steam XP

Apparently they've already been accepted.

If they make it where players have to work together to survive, in a world where you can pick up anything (kind of like Oblivion) and you just continually try to survive, it most definitely has a chance to be quite awesome.

Edit: I guess what i'm trying to get at is kind of like minecraft, but without the crafting and the zombies are around in the daytime too. I would want it to be a scaled down version of the actual world. If they could make it realistic-ish, like items would eventually break, real weapons would be scarce, and vehicles would run out of gasoline, it would be the perfect zombie game. I know this is hoping for too much and it probably won't ever happen, but still.
