Is there some special commitee that sits around with thesauruses trying to force clever acronyms by using really obscure or downright silly naming.
I'll bet anything that this is true.
Yeah there almost has to be. That, or even the government has that "one guy" if you know what I mean.
That one guy who comes up with catchphrases and buzzwords that you SWEAR appeared in Dilbert comics last week...
Oh, here's a good one!

SWEAR: Sure Would've Expected After Reading

BOOM!
I can't think of an acronym for BOOM, so here is Baldrick doing his war poems instead.

Doesn't an acronym have to be an abbreviation that you pronouce like a word rather than the individual letters? Thefe WTF is a good abbreviation but not an acronym. Whereas as something like RAM (random access memory) is an acronym.

Don't get me started on anacronyms and backronyms.

Sadly, I took an hour out of my life to learn how to say this entire thing in less then five seconds, but it has served me well.

Don't think too hard about this. People refer to the ones that don't even make words as acronyms, even if it's technically a mistake.

You guys know the difference between acronyms and regular initialisms right? FUBAR is an acronym, WTF is not. An acronym is an initialism you pronounce as a word, like FUBAR, you can say FUBAR (Foo-Bar.) You cannot say WTF as anything but W. T. F. At least not without looking mental.

QCTM: Quietly Chuckling To Myself. Wayyy more honest than "Laughing out loud"

Side note: It bothers me when acronyms overlap. For instance, I've seen QFT mean both "Quote For Truth" and "Quit Fucking Trolling"...it gets confusing.

The hell's a backronym? Or an anacronym?

It gets into iffy territory. Some sets of letters are used as initialisms and acronyms based on context (IRA and the IRA), a lot of things commonly used as initialisms can be pronounced, but aren't in common usage (OMG, USA). Abbreviations weren't really formally formalized in the English language until after they had already become pretty common and the "rules" are still pretty shaky.

If you want to be really strict you wind up with silly things like WsMD or MsP instead of WMDs and MPs. Never mind things like GNU which have acronyms in the acronym.

Anacronym is where the acronym is so popular it replaces the word in language, e.g. RAM, no one says random access memory anymore.

Backronym is where a company pick the word they want and then build an acronym around it, such as F.E.A.R. the game, First Encounter Assault Recon.

I always thought QFT was an acronym for QUIT FUCKING TALKING not quoted for truth....It made certain conversations make so much more sense when I figured that out.
