do read alistair reynolds for fun, you will be blown away. may not be good for your writing though because we are only mortal and will never be able to compare. read richard morgan, robert heinlein, john varley, neal asher, gene wolfe, china miéville, jeff noon, some of LE modesitts SF stuff...

books to read before you die? my answer is as many possible - good and bad - like food, tv, movies and games, the bad make you appreciate the great that much more.
