I think Killer7 did a good job in connecting death to the narrative. Although I must say was inconvenient. Personally I prefer quick saves and auto saves and for people that think quick saves are too easy can just use the auto saves.

The Left 4 Dead series are a great example of an okay story told in a great way. I also think that Fallout 3 allowing you to explore and discover the story is one of the best ways to tell a story.
