No, but it does raise the maximum awesomeness threshold. For example, would BioShock be as awesome if the splicers weren't horribly disfigured and homicidal? No, because it adds to the atmosphere and immersion. It also makes it creepy, which is a VERY good thing in my book.

The Michael Jackson zombie in Plants vs Zombies. He summons backup dancer zombies and they proceed to do the thriller dance over to your house (to eat your brains). Oh, and this game came out like two months or so before he died, so it became so much funnier after that.
