Because the story is about the journey of maturing from boy to man. Without it Kubrick just says people can't be changed whereas the book says the exact opposite.

And the new testament is a little different if Jesus isn't nailed to the cross. The fact is Kubrick knew of the final chapter and chose to ignore it.

It may be a little overrated but it's still a very good movie. So is Fight Club. A Clockwork Orange is also very good but loses out by omitting the 21st chapter which drastically alters the end of the story. Eyes Wide Shut? Meh. Kubrick's worst by a long way.

I take the OP to mean movies that made me squirm, not just bad movies. I've seen a lot of depressing movies, some of which were just pointless and depressing, but many that really touched me. Any gore porn or torture porn I won't watch. So I haven't bothered watching Hostel or Saw or that one...
