    Why I don't like piracy: a software developer's thoughts.

Hey waaait a minute; I don't think pirates are deliberately trying to screw developers here. I think if there's any deliberate screwing it'll be focused primarily on the faceless giants - publishers. After all, games devs are the ones who toil and sweat into the long hours to bring about these...

Games you've beaten so hard they needed dental records to identify the body?

Got 100% on GTA: Vice City twice, on PS2 and PC. Can get enough carnage going on 6 stars that I can reliably crash most PS2s; great gag when you casually lean over to a friend and ask innocently, "Mind if I have a go?"

Poll: What type of race did or would you create in Spore!

Herbivores - I wanted to create something so successful that it would eventually populate most people's worlds. Something totally innuous; along the lines of how ants and cockroaches are some of the planet's most numerous creatures but without having a big impact.

    Games That Desperately Need Sequels

Homeworld 2 - defo man. Psychonauts. More Tim Schafer madness please. It's not so much the gameplay, there were some brilliantly realised characters both through art and voice acting, that we don't really see so much of these days. Especially when humour's involved. And of course, a new...

Poll: What type of gamer are YOU?

Medic - I play mostly support jobs really... handy for farming XP while usefully filling roles others aren't playing. Also, my reactions are shot to crap (argh the ravages of age etc.) so prefer to use my brain when placing the crosshairs over a mass of speeding pixels gets too taxing.

    167: From Gamers to Soldiers

If military sims do what they should do, I don't think civvies would find it enjoyable at all. Well, for the majority one would hope this to be the case.

    Most Clever Movies *Spoilers*

Primer. You really have to see it. If you liked Pi, this one's a corker. Here's the blurb from its Wiki page; a nice synopsis 'cos I'm lazy; "Primer (2004) is an American science fiction film about the accidental invention of time travel. The film was written, directed and produced by Shane...

Not sure about that - when they need to 'de-rail' one of the speeding hadrons they've built a 1000 tonne block of graphite to absorb the impact of the collision. I mean, the bugger's going at 99.9% the speed of light; that's a lot of energy!

If you need to reformat your PC just to 'fix' the problem, then I think it's only reasonable to describe the fault as terminal, hence BSoD. However, BSoDs can often be easily rectified. They can result from a large range of faults, both hardware malfunctions and software errors, from...

    Spore and its DRM

@clarinetJWD: Agree totally on the Steam-client thing. I bought Sins of a Solar Empire and was pleasantly surprised at how efficient and easy to use the Stardock Central game manager handled the game licensing.

    Spore and its DRM

Although I hasten to add that this 3-install limit is a bit rubbish. Needing to login should be enough - it'll limit the user to only playing one instance of the game at any time, so it shouldn't matter how many machines it's actually installed on. Then of course there's the matter of upgrading...

    Spore and its DRM

Humm, it's not a single player game. It is essential that this game connects to a massive user-created monster database. Besides, for online games I think this is the way forward for anti-piracy stuff. You don't need the CD, you can multi-install and all you need to do is create your account and...

...or if you're based in the US and want to try something before I get to respond to your post, try running a checkdisk from the recovery console on your windows boot disk. I don't do Vista, but the XP recovery/install disk has this option: -Boot the machine from the XP install disk. (You...

OK, so it's crashing after the machine POSTs (the single beep) and before Windows loads (I assume you're using windows?) I guess the BSOD occurs for only a split second before the machine reboots? You can tell the machine to stop rebooting, so that you can view the reason for the BSOD. To get...
