It really saddens me that the gamers of my generation have such a problem with the gamers who are five or more years younger than us. We were all kids at some point, and many of us were gaming online even then -- I know I was. I started gaming online all the way back in 2002, when I was only 12 years old. And you know what? I never encountered any hostility. Dedicated servers back then had a similar atmosphere to the neighborhood game shop -- you know, that place that people go to play tabletop games like D&D and Warhammer. It was a friendly place filled with like minded people of all ages. Why in the heck did that die with the advent of microphones?
For my part, I have absolutely no problem with kids playing online, as long as their parents are supervising them, or at least know what the kids will be getting into. I don't even have a problem with kids talking on a mic -- sure, some of them scream obscenities into the mics, but it's not like there aren't adults who do it too. Heck, it's worse when an adult does it; a screaming little kid is a spoiled brat who needs to learn some manners. A screaming grown man is a dangerous animal, trying to assert his dominance. Which of these would you rather deal with?
Of course, I'm in the minority on this site who not only don't hate kids, but actually like them. I'm about 3/4ths of the way through an education degree, and I would like to eventually have kids of my own. How many escapists can honestly make either one of those statements?
