If it promotes discussion on the nature of Islam, a culture and its place in society, it is of benefit to public life.
Oh how wrong you are. Anyone under the age of 18 in america has no freedoms, the Zero tolerance policy will see to that. Comeing from one who himself was figuritively sodomized by that policy I'll tell you, we treat our schools like prisons. College is much better if you advoid the "diversity" campuses. It's weird when you think of it, grade school is horribly right wing, and college is horribly left wing. No wonder kids are so fucked up these days.

But yes, I see these girls doing this for some reasons.

1. Their parents are forceful anti-islam idiots.
2. They want to troll irl, hur flamewarz!
3. day off from school!!!

Presuming students have the right to free speech in public schools just isn't correct. Schools can dictate a dress code and have been doing so at least since the 50s. And shirt's that say this would justifiably be banned from any public school because they promote no discussion at all. It's essentially trolling on shirts. You have, in essence, a captive audience in a public school so inflammatory, demeaning, or inappropriate clothing can and will be banned.

When I saw the title of the thread I thought it was going to be another stupid story about fundamentalist Christians objecting to shirts with some kind of God joke on them; THIS actually surprised me. And frankly, I think it was the right thing to do. The shirts were blatantly offensive- the racial equivalent would be a shirt saying "All n*****s belong in jail", and NO-ONE would be arguing about that. Frankly, the school was probably just trying to protect them from a fundamentalist Islam lynch mob (remember Salman Rushdie). Personally I hate Islam (I hate Christianity too), but I wouldn't go around wearing my beliefs on my clothing where it will offend everyone who meets me.

The stupid kid also needs to work on their preprepared speech, too. Why would we WANT to have "a future that's not worth fighting for"? Possibly one too many double-negatives there. And the father is an asshole too, but what would you expect from Christian fundamentalists?

Zero Tolerance Policy. Go against this just a little bit, even if it's not true equals supension or explusions. The policy itself has some right wing bullshit in it.

Most of the time Zero Tolerance applies to weapons and drugs though, not really this type of offense. I ask because, in general, ALL public education leans to the left somewhat. I'm still confused as to how such a policy gets divided into right and left wing.

Have you read the policy? I suggest you do if you haven't. Last time I checked it, it does contain some things that are a bit too conservative.

And trust me, it's way more then just drugs and weapons. The reason you don't hear any of the other things is because they're not "news worthy". *mumbles* I sware the news isn't "news worthy" *mumbles*

What?!? People pushing their own agenda by using their very own children as the median?? I agree with you, that does not sound at all like something a 10 years old would say, maybe an intelligent 15 year old could though. But yeah, the dad should get F'ed in the A.

but seriously, people, this kind of stuff is going on.
I'd be more surprised if we went an entire year/month without something like this happening

Well, that man is entitled to free speech.

He should voice his own opinion and only try to influence his children when they are old enough (and intelligent enough) to make up her own opinion.

And frankly its really annoying me now that although we are entitled to our free speech in England you can be arrested for "racial disturbance" or something... doesn't this seem like a breach of free speech? I would fight tooth and nail for this man to be able to voice his opinions, no matter how stupid they are.

Also, the two goons at the end really annoyed me.

Well, while the 10 year old almost definitely was being told these things from somewhere, it is conceivable that the 15 year old was actually voicing their own opinions, and was the one projecting it onto the 10 year old rather then the father.

That said, after watching the video, I doubt it. The children did look like they were trying to recite something they memorized, while the father was actually talking quite normally.

Yes, I've read it, I'm a teacher, I need to know these rules. But which particular zero tolerance policy you're talking about is something I don't get. These policies differ wildly between school districts, and are set up by the school board.

For the record, I don't agree with zero tolerance (a fork isn't a weapon), but are you saying that these children are the victim of a zero tolerance policy involving their clothing? I'm probably not going to trust you until you can actually SHOW me something that shows what you are talking about.

I have a copy of the Pinellas County (I live in St. Pete Florida) code of conduct here. It doesn't say anything against this, although it is against conduct to wear anything that could disrupt school activity...so I think that just might happen. Yes I know this is in Gainsville but I think other counties have similar policies.

That's pretty messed up. People like that give us Christians bad names... trust me, we're not all like that. Intolerance is upsetting to me...

I do hope to god you worded that wrong.

OT: freedom of speech or otherwise this could cause really big problems for the school so i can see it from their view point, although what they came out with when questioned surprised me a little.

I think someone needs to look in mirror. I wonder if this family's aware that they're on the fast track to becoming the very thing they're fighting against.
