Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds is my pick for best of the year.
Absolutely loved it.
Not that I bought many other albums this year.

Um, I'm not really a music expert, but I think these three were my favorites of the year:

The Wombats Proudly Present This Modern Glitch

Death Cab for Cutie - Codes and Keys

Florence + The Machine - Ceremonials

Elbow's "Build A Rocket Boys!" was a great album - just not quite as awesome as "The Seldom Seen Kid".

Also now can't stop listening to Chase and Status "No More Idols" - it's genre-defying anthemic and euphoric, which is just what I wanted to listen to at the moment.

Camp by Childish Gambino is pretty awesome.
Camp was my number 7.

My top ten list is as follows:

1) Barton Hollow by The Civil Wars
2) Together/Apart by Grieves
3) Kingdom of Ruin by Vangough
4) SoulPunk by Patrick Stump
5) Goblin by Tyler, the Creator
6) Vices and Virtues by Panic! At the Disco
7) Camp by Childish Gambino
8) Understanding What We've Grown to Be by We Came As Romans
9) My Devil in Your Eyes by The Color Morale
10) All Eternals Deck by The Mountain Goats.

I'd post links, but I'm on my phone.

Honorary mentions to You Belong by After Midnight Project, as it's technically an EP. And I would have loved to put Monster by Ace of Hearts up here, but the CD hasn't shipped yet, so I haven't been able to listen to it yet.

I wouldn't say I have liked any new trends this year, which is usually the case. However, since Miracle of Sound started on here, I've appreciated synthesisers more (especially with New Black Gold).

Incidentally, I would probably say the album of the year for me was MoS' 'Level 1', partly because it was so damn cheap and had 33 songs, which were nearly all great.

Coming second is probably 'A Dramatic Turn of Events' by Dream Theater - turned out I don't miss Portnoy as much as I thought I would.

Third is probably 'Reckless, Relentless Forever' by Children of Bodom

The disappointment for me was 'Back Through Time' by Alestorm, although there were a few catchy sea shanties, quite a lot of it was repetitive, which is hardly surprising considering the specific topic for their songs.

I picked up too many albums to list. So I'll just list a few favorites from the year. You'll either love em or hate em. I wouldn't say it was the best year for new DNB releases, hopefully next year will be better. Merry Christmas!

This was a good year for progressive metal. The new Dream Theater album wasn't that great but Arch/Matheos album "Sympathetic Resonance" was awesome.

But if that wasn't enough Leprous produced a good album by the name of "bilateral".

Also the new cunninlynguists (rap)album was awesome as well. But that has already been linked.

The only song that came out this year that I can say are my faves (and also recall came out his year) are:
Party Rock Anthem [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQ6zr6kCPj8&ob=av3e]
Sexy and I Know It [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyx6JDQCslE&ob=av3e]
Make Some Noise [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdgLMslbDuY&ob=av2e]

I know I'm going to get flack for the LMFAO songs, but I do love them! I just find them so fun, and catchy, and damn do they get in your bones... *starts shuffling*

Special Mentions go to these albums, for being great, but not quite as amazing as the ones above.

Flying Tigers - White Wizzard (West LA Nights [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhKpNulB9VA], Fight to the Death [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zS7Cl_KBYeU])
In Waves - Trivium (Built to Fall [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XD2jKlCiK0&ob=av2n], In Waves [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxOhc-dfEDY&feature=relmfu])
I Say - Mr B. the Gentleman Rhymer (You Just Can't [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SynCx4rfej0], Crazy Knights [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xerj670_XnE], Songs for Acid Edward [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nfjte-ILJJ4])

Super special extra mention goes to my single favourite song from this year, which I heard once, on BBC Radio 2.

Wasted Years - Ryan Adams (Iron Maiden acoustic folk cover) [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82SaWx3-gks&feature=BFa&list=FL3lGoSenOUOx-L1YAHVTM7A&lf=mh_lolz]

2011 was a bit lacking on my fave artists but I've found some fun stuff. This is only what I found was from 2011 instantly mind ;)

Does it offend you, yeah? - Don't say we didn't warn you, Decent & Fun
Woodkid - Iron EP, Cool new artist
Electro Swing Republic - Electro Swing Republic, Swing remix!
Gorillaz - The Fall, Really came digitally in 2010, but went "official" in 2011 so I'll just put it here since Gorillaz are cool.

- Mind the awesome soundtracks of Assassin's Creed Revelations, Infamous 2, Portal 2 and Skyrim of course.

God, Top 10s are so mainstream. Here's my top 13.

1) Mastodon- The Hunter
2) Anthrax- Worship Music
3) Turbowolf- Turbowolf
4) Skindred- Union Black
5) Social Distortion- Hard Times & Nursery Rhymes
6) Machine Head- Unto The Locust
7) Frank Turner- England Keep My Bones
8) Black Spiders- Sons of the North
9) Protest The Hero- Scurrilous
10) Flogging Molly- Speed of Darkness
11) Dropkick Murphys- Going Out In Style
12) Maylene & The Sons Of Disaster- IV
13) Rise Against- Endgame

Probably not quite in that order, but The Hunter is definitely my favourite album this year. Fucking brilliant album.

Oh, and special hatred to Black Tide's Post Mortem. Biggest disappointment of the year by a mile. They've gone from being really, really awesome to a shitty BFMV wannabe band, and they were shite live too. Fuck them.

You ranked IV as one of your top albums? I love Maylene but damn...that was a shitty cd.

I didn't buy many albums that were released this year, this year.

Painful syntax aside, the new Ni-Hao! album Marvelous was good. Not as good as Gorgeous, but few things are. If you like peppy, upbeat noise rock (more rock than noise, mind you), this is a good pick.

EDIT: Oh! That Death Grips mixtape Exmilitary was good too. Fun, shouty music.

And Deerhoof vs. Evil was released in January! Christ, I'm forgetting a lot of things here. Deerhoof is one of my favorite bands ever, and they've made some of my favorite records ever. This isn't necessarily one of those, but it's still awesome.

While it may be cheating, Nisennenmondai's live album was one of my favorites this year too. It only has one new song (although some of the songs are played differently), but they're as intense as ever. Desperately want to see them in concert again.

I think Post Mortem by Black Tide was the only album I was looking forward to this year and it was great. So 1st - 10th place goes to Post Mortem. Yey

I've found that 2011 has had a lot of great releases, so it was pretty hard to narrow it down to a 15 album list.

Surtur Rising - Amon Amarth
The Discovery - Born of Osiris
Wasting Light - Foo Fighters
In Waves - Trivium
Scripted - Icon For Hire
Under The Grey Banner - Dragonland
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Original Soundtrack - Jeremy Soule
March of the Deathcult - Ceremonial Castings
The Lay of Thrym - Týr
Epsilon - Blood Stain Child
Red, White and Blood - Generation Kill
Alone - Evan Brewer
To Hell With God - Deicide
Let Them Talk - Hugh Laurie
The Harvest Wombs - Fallujah
