Thats incorrect. Mag will feature 16 players. With the ability to control hordes of NPC's.
Get the facts straight.
There would prbably be stuck in one game for a long time.

A game with interactive realistic gurella warfare... not just petty small exchanges of fire like we get now... this will be skirmishing at it's most epic... if it doesn't kill hardware with lag of course...

Neverwinter Nights can do 96 people. And it's been here for almost 8 years already. Not much new.

Add that it's easy to make 2 servers like that and link them and you get almost 200. Make 3 servers and it's over 270.

Besides, I have to see the lag coming from 255 other players...

Great, I hate to be the dark cloud here but the PS3 online player base is very small though. This is going to make finding 255 other people a very, very long and annoying process I suspect. But I'd be happy to be proven wrong.
While this statement is true, I would love to see that in action
As would I, I'm not a fanboy for any console (at least I don't think so) and I'm hoping for the best for them. I'm perfectly fine being wrong because it would give the PS3 a definite use for its superior hardware.
Indeed. I think even PS3 lovers would agree that they would like to see all the high-tech stuff that went into the PS3 and made it expensive finally put to use

256 seems so far fetch it would maybe mean 256 different values as in from 0-255

(reminds me of that ff8 joke with the guy who has 256 cats but he cant count any higher than that becasue ff has always had its number values between 0 and 255 makign a 256 value system you kinda have to be a computer nerd to get the joke at first glance >.>)
Oh man! That joke bytes!! ;P

256 is just too many people to have in a single area - plus finding that many people on a console network will take forever (it can take 5mins to find 16 people for a CoD4 game at times)

This sounds pretty much like PlanetSide [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlanetSide]. which came out in 2003 and which strangely enough was developed by Sony.

Never played it myself though but heard it was fun in the beginning.
Everyone keeps talking about resistance and other games but Zac_Dai I think hit it right on. This sounds like a spit and copy idea of something like PlanetSide. PlanetSide even supported more than 256 players. It (was/is) basically a shooting MMORPG/MMOFPS that has vehicles and air ships. I lost count of how many free copies I got of the game. It's popularity did not last long.

First off the concept is not new and i would not be suprised if there was a similar game out there.
Second, wouldnt that rip to the severs up making it jerky and impossible to play?

lmao nice response i was laughing my ass off when i first saw that joke in ff8 and my friend sitting next to me was like... "i dont get it..."

and yeah as for CoD its a pain to get a round started >.> 256 is just a bit to far, i mean even in things like haloit can take a while and those are some damn well popular games online

Planetside supported around 390 if I remember correctly, and yes it was a blast, and still is if you can find a decent fight.

The online PS3 player base inst that small. Finding enough players will be no sweat. It obviously wont be done by dedicated servers.
You're kidding, right? It will be done on dedicated servers. As powerful as each PS3 may be, it can't manage the data of 256 people AND send it to every other PS3 playing that game fast enough.

Although, this isn't that new. As someone already said, it has been done before with PlanetSide [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlanetSide].

This sounds cool. And even if it doesn't work out it sure will be fun to watch. I can only imagine the fun you could have with that many people

Ideas:
You could line the teams up, give them sniper rifles, and have a kickass Napoleonic style rifle battles.

Use teamchat and start your own Choir

Make a giant human pyramid

why this won't work:

Getting 100+ people to work together would be impossible (it would be awesome if you did it). Getting internet people to be a team is like herding cats

Game modes like CTF will have to be rethought as the flag holder can have a human shield 20 people deep

What if one team all had grenades or rocket launchers?

Anyway it will be fun to watch

Except, of course, that assumes both PS3 and 360 have the same capabilities... yet we have people like Kojima claiming the 360 could never handle MGS4, and the makers of Red Alert 3 putting in graphical enhancements they claim couldn't be done on the 360...
Except we've already had shooters with more people than 256 (vehicles and all) at a time with PCs far less powerful than any of the consoles these days. That isn't the problem. Zipper being a Sony owned company really has more to do with it than anything else.

There's really nothing that they've shown or in their published plans that hasn't been seen before. Yet another shooter to add to the pile. And considering how hit or miss SOCOM titles were... well, I would wait for the full version before anything.

Yes, you read the title right. Zipper (the people who made SOCOM) are curently making MAG, a multi-player only, PS3 *sigh* exclusive title. It supports 256 person matchs, 3 factions, and a whole lot of ass-kicking fun...hopefully.
Have fun with the lag!

Yes, you read that right.
I though this as well but seeing as a) I'd not heard of it and b) they're talking about a release in 2009 and c) the latest new stories on it were in January, that doesn't matter so much.

It also still raises an interesting debate about the possibility Massively multiplayer FPS games in general. Personally I'd rather see it on the PC than the PS3...
Latest? Yes. First? No.
The 256-player multiplayer was announced when the game was announced - at E3 last year.
Last summer, and that's almost a year ago.

But true that, it would be sooo much better if made (atleast also) on PC.
