The online PS3 player base inst that small. Finding enough players will be no sweat. It obviously wont be done by dedicated servers.
Agreed, Resistance 2 handles 40+ players without any trouble, plus Zipper know a lot when it comes down to networking, I'm sure they wouldn't have taken on a 256 player challenge if they didn't think it was possible.

Am I the only one worried that this will be just like Halo 3?

Half assed singleplayer and awesome multiplayer?
What makes you think there'll be any singleplayer?
So they're going for the TF2 approach?

That's too bad, I really want singleplayer in my games, or some solo action at all for that matter...
Online only games are hardly new. All I can say is tough cookies.. good online games are always welcome.

This sounds cool. And even if it doesn't work out it sure will be fun to watch. I can only imagine the fun you could have with that many people

Ideas:
You could line the teams up, give them sniper rifles, and have a kickass Napoleonic style rifle battles.

Use teamchat and start your own Choir

Make a giant human pyramid

why this won't work:

Getting 100+ people to work together would be impossible (it would be awesome if you did it). Getting internet people to be a team is like herding cats

Game modes like CTF will have to be rethought as the flag holder can have a human shield 20 people deep

What if one team all had grenades or rocket launchers?

Anyway it will be fun to watch
Most of the issues I have with this idea are right here. Though there are ways to balance it (have multiple flags at different points that have to be captured at the same time), these have their own problems (being a real pain in the butt).

Urgh... I can only imagine the swarms of shrill-voiced children bombarding me with sentences like this: "IWANTEDTHATWEAPONNOOBBITCHWHERESTHEFLAGFUCKINGSNIPERLOLYOUSUCK."

Ugh. Sorry for the all-caps(nobody likes it, but I'm trying to make a point about voice clutter) and generalization of younger gamers: some kids are actually polite and helpful, but these are too few and far between.

It would have to be drop in, drop out, there's no way you're gettin that many people into a lobby. However if thats the actual number in the game it could actually be like a war simulator. I hope it works properly it sounds fun

This thread has been done.

On topic; If they avoid the lag, shoddy matchmaking, poor team balancing, and idiots who won't work as a team then it should be cool. Now I just have to go shoot one of those damn flying pigs for dinner.
DON'T DO IT! Swine Flu goddammit.

On topic: Why go to 256 straight away? Is there even a 128 player game? If I was them, I would start small and work my way up.

Everyone one seems to assume that it is just a shooter that allows 256 players. I am sure with the 8 players squads etc. they will implement some restrictions. Maybe something more realistic like not the whole squad allowed to have sniper rifles? Until there are more details about what the game actually is we can't really say. As has been shown in several messages in this thread, there are ways to do 256 players. I don't know anything more than anyone else, but I am not going to just cry "LAG FEST!" until I see more details.

Wondering what most of the naysayers in this thread would be saying if we put "Halo 4" was announced with all the same features? Can see it now "Halo 4 is gonna have 256 players, 8 man squads etc. It is gonna so rock!" :)

Anyway, doesn't look like it's coming out anytime soon, unlike what this year old news has stated. We will probably hear more at THIS years E3 and they will say 1st Q 2010. Not sure why I am even commenting, as I am not interested in this or any other shooter, console or otherwise.

I am interested to see how it turns out though.

I bet it just turns out as a bunch of 8v8 games on the same map.
Actually, that sounds sort of fun. As soon as a group kills another group in an area of the map, they move a little bit to attack another couple of groups that haven't beaten each other yet. Sneak attack style.
