Apocalypse Now (you simply cannot understand how crazy and important this movie is until you see it)
Immortal Beloved - seriously, beethoven plus beautiful filmography and a YOUNG, HOT ISABELLA ROSELLINI
The Fistful of Dollars Trilogy (technically this is cheating, but they are really one HUGE story arc, that defined - or epitomized westerns)

The Departed (Finally got Scorsese an Oscar)
Memento (Nolan's best film, IMO) (Yes, that [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Nolan] Nolan)
Brick (The reason Gordon-Levitt is in Inception. Busted his 3rd Rock typecast)

Can't believe none of these have been mentioned yet.
FOR SHAME.

(Delete one from each depending on preferences)

Comedy: Monty Python's Life of Brian / Airplane!
Serious: The Shawshank Redemption / Fight Club
Genre-defining: The Lion King / Pulp Fiction

Damn that was hard.

You aint worth nothing if you havent survived these movies!
You have an interesting take on the meaning of the title. Bravo for out-of-the-box thinking.

1. War Inc (best film ever)
I saw War Inc. as per suggested by a friend and I didn't like it - there was a lot of good ideas in there, and some good satire, but I felt that it could have been so much better. So much more refined...

My top 3 movies ever are Hot Fuzz, Slumdog Millionaire, and Let the Right One In. Seriously, everyone needs to see all of those movies to see what real directing looks like.

The Shawshank Redemption
Fight Club
Inception

The Dark Knight is my favorite movie, but I think people need to see these three over it.
