...and all I could do was sit back in my chair and applaud as the credits rolled in. I don't think I've ever been as thoroughly impressed by a video game as I have been by this one. It fits together perfectly... The gameplay, the story, the characters... It's all just seamlessly intertwined in one big bag of awesome.
The question I pose to you guys is if you've ever had a moment, at the end of a game, when all you could think was "fuck, that was excellent" (or words to that effect :p)
Have you played the episodes as well?
I'm about to :p
Episode one isn't that good... but 2 is siiiiiick
I loved Episode 1 D:
How so... it didn't improve on HL2 in any way, apart from
blowing up the citadel
and the only thing it introduced were the Zombine.
The best bit was the end train sequence and the thrown car bit, highlights in a pool of average.

Besides HL2, GTA4 was definitely one of those games. Also Bioshock. And World in Conflict had a pretty engaging story for an RTS. Very well done.

Shadow of the Colossus, MGS3, Half-life(pretty much all of them) and Jak 3 all did that for me.

Now you need to finish episode one and two.

Shadow of the Colossus was mentioned.

Metroid Prime, if only because I felt the game built itself up so wonderfully (even if it did end in an annoying collect-a-thon that I thankfull avoided by being a good explorer throughout).

Ocarina of Time, because the final dungeon, Gannondorf fight, escape and ultimate Ganon fight were such an inclusive skill-testing crescendo to the game itself.

Metal Gear Solid, because it kept letting me play all the way to the awesome end.

Portal, in a much more concise way.

If you enjoyed HL2, well, my friend, prepare yourself for the joy that is HL2 Episodes 1 and 2. Both are great fun and on par with some of the best parts of Half Life 2, but HL2 Episode 2 is the finest distillation of what Half-Life 2 is all about. It introduces so much cool new stuff and has one of the best final sections of any game I've ever had the pleasure of playing. Seek them out and enjoy.

Portal is the first that comes to mind. Still Alive plays, credit rolls...

"Damn."

This also, a few more are slowly coming to mind... Like at the end of COD4... Pretty much, and Prey, because I loved that game. Although HL2 takes the cake.

Metal Gear Solid 3 probably. The game was epic, but I was kinda locked out of the loop when it came to the plot. It was my first Metal Gear.

I think I may ahve at Portal and halo 3, though my all time number one was definitely half-life 2.

Mother 3. And all of the Half-Life games.

But enough of this thread already, you have beaten Half-Life 2 but not the episodes, what are you waiting for?

I'm just going to warn you that since you enjoyed Half Life 2, you're going to experience a series of events that goes something like this.

You finish Episode 1.
"That was pretty good"

You finish Episode 2.
"That was Awesome. I want to play episode 3. NOW!"

Then you realize that episode 3 doesn't even have a release date yet and every time you see a press release from valve that involves anything other then episode 3, the first question that comes to mind is:
"All well and good, but what about episode 3?"

The end of Final Fantasy Tactics, sure there was some mistranslations and some other little issues but the game was huge, endlessly replayable (for me at least, I've beaten it 15+ times with different teams every time) and a ton of fun with a soundtrack that I love. Trisection? Anyone? ...Well...fine I'm going to listen to it!...alone! ...Or just play the game again.

Diablo 2. Then again...it might have been the D2 adiction getting of my system...so I shall never know.
This, And Warcraft II Reign of Chaos.

That game proved that RTS's can have exellent stories and not have shitty gameplay. Good job Blizzard.

The reason I continue to play video games is because I do what you described after playing game after game. I am constantly amazed at the ingenuity, emotional impact, artistry, and fun put into each game experience.
