Hi guys

My 360 has gone a bit funny this morning, I was playing away fine for an hour or two and then took a break, went back and the following happened:

First it wouldn't read the game discs

Then it started to make wierd chugging, farting noises when I put the discs back in and pressed 'play game'. It sounds kind of like 'scchrrrr grrr schrrr chuurrr'

Then the entire thing froze up, and does so any time I start up a disc.

Anyone else experienced this? (I'd phone Microsoft but they're useless).

EDIT: Now the disc drive won't even stay closed. It opens as soon as the console is switched on and re-opens every time I close it, disc or no disc. Argh!

EDIT: Microsoft are now telling me I have to pay myself to repair thier shitty fucking faulty console that wasn't fit to perform its most basic function. That's just wonderful.

Well, it's official: My 360 is FUBAR.

FINAL EDIT: Fixed it myself! Woohoo! Tore it apart and put it back together again, it was a loose magnet of all things. It ain't pretty but it works.

So for discussions sake, share your experiences of a time your console crapped out on you and broke your geek-heart.

Have you checked disc for scratches?

Does it freeze if you start up without disc?

From the sound, and experience with other cd readers, it sounds like the laser might be broken, or the engine that moves the laser when reading disc..

Yeah, no scratches. Tried a few games and the same with all of em.

Would that not be strange that lazer is broken seeing as it was working perfectly well 15 minutes previous?

Try the online tech support as well. I know a lot of people say they're useless but they've always managed to help me...

Also disc drive might have kicked it, meaning you need to send it off to be repaired.

Well, no, not really strange, happened to me twice.. Working laser, then 2 mins later its broken.. Or the engine that moves the laser about inside the cd-rom.. Happened to me once with dvd player, and another one with pc cd-rom.. Exact same noise as you describe..

Sounds unlucky.

I've had 2 consoles and 3 breakdowns. but Microsoft have been incredibly helpful and quick each time. Now my console has been working for about a year and a half perfectly.

Solution: Buy Playstation 3?

Im not sure but it has always seemed to me that xbox has more failures with their machines than playstation has..

But on topic: Yeah, only way to fix it is to send it to Microsoft.. But xbox's are quite cheap so if warranty is out, maybe buy a new machine..

Grrr. How long does it take Microsoft to fix it? A week? Two weeks? I'm supposed to be trading it in for a slim in 3 weeks as you get a discount for trading before the release, and this is going to F my plans in the bum.

Yeah.. guess you have to send it off to microsoft, and if they don't fix it.. then buy the new xbox. I wonder if you could trade your xbox in for the new one even if it doesn't work.

When I sent mine off the second time I was expecting at least a 2 week wait.

They got it back to me in 5 days.

I was very impressed.

Ok, FUCK Microsoft.

I phoned them and they told me because my warranty is up it will be a paid repair that will cost me 90 euros. What the hell?

This was in INTERNAL hardware failure. I didn't break it. I take better care of my 360 than anyone I know. I never even move the damn thing.

The product was obviously not fit for the use in which it was intended. And I have to pay for the repair? I call bullshit. Fucking Microsft.

Hmm, maybe try and trade it in? I don't know if they go check it, but it'll turn on alright without a disk.

Not an option for me man. I don't want some other poor sod to end up with a broken console.

like most products from microsoft they are desgined to break after a few years so you have to pay more money for it later down the line.

but yeah i had problems for my xbox that resulted in me having to buy a new HD due to it getting corrupt all the damn time

Surely it'll be the company like Gamestation or Gamestop or wherever you trade it into that ends up with the broken console?

actually that probably wouldn't be what happened, i know the game stores here where i live in the states will accept broken consoles for trade, then send them off to be refurbished before selling them to the next consumer

EDIT: also i've had the same thing happen to me before, i'm on my 4th system i believe after burning out 3 disc drives, never had the red ring just play it so much i ran it into the ground after like a year

Get the new xbox. You know it makes sense. :)
That actually makes no sense whatsoever.

OT: You could try returning it to the shop you bought it from - I dunno what it's like in Ireland but here retailers have to accept a faulty product back for a year.
