Gah, punk. Blargles.

Anyway. Hard to choose an actual favourite song for many of these, so these are just contenders that I happen to be in the mood for atm.

Need to check these two out.

I could have picked any song off of Untrue though. Archangel is probably my favourite and the catchiest, but this has more to it. The whole album is absolutely incredible. In 20 years, people will see this to Dubstep as what Loveless is to Shoegaze.

No point in listening to this outside of the album though. The darkest, most majestic, incredible, overwhelming and immersive album ever. Explosions In The Sky and Sigur Ros have nothing on this band.

Can't narrow it down to 5.

Heh it always bothers me when someone calls the Offspring Punk... they're certainly a damned good band but their closer to pop punk or alternative than anything else...<.<

Real Punk is frightening and foreign and something most people would be unable to recognize...
I'd be reluctant to call anything "real punk" - besides, look at the bands that spearheaded Punk Rock: The Sex Pistols, The Damned, The Ramones, The Clash, Buzzcocks; all of these bands were essentially just selling hooky rock music while having an attitude about it.

The bands you listed were all part of the 80's wave of hardcore punk acts, and their sound reflects it. However, claiming groups like Black Flag, Deep Wound, or the Dead Kennedys are indicative of "real punk" seems fallacious. In a way, the kind of "punk" the Offspring offers is just a cleaner-sounding version of the stuff which emerged in the 70's. Granted, as time has gone on, they have become decidedly more mainstream and poppy (and are well-deserving of the pop-punk moniker), but the stuff they released in the early 90's has a distinctly 'classic' punk sound, in my opinion.
Well IMO punk rock is defined by it's simplicity and attitude... you know 3 - 4 chord songs, with simple melodies, minimal production value and the attitude of a crazed mad man...<.<

you know it's about taking Rock back to it's roots and turning it into this primal and passionate form of instrument bashing...

you know basically GG Allin... whether you think he's good or not... I honestly hate him... he really encapsulates punk rock at it's roots, more than anyone else...<.<

That's... that's ... is that a joke? you know... like the "pop" song they released to please the record label or something? God I hope that's what it is... if it's not... that's just sad... they weren't even my favorite band... but that's depressing...

must cleanse ears...

Ah... that's better...
I have no idea. I mean, I'm not a huge Offspring fan, but I do like a lot of their stuff. And that latest song, I still can't make it all the way through. I really tried but it is just fucking awful.

Good choice of ear cleanser.
YEah I mean... it made sense for something like Pretty Fly For a White Guy... you know where they were making fun of it all... but here... it's just... It sucks... so bad...

And that is exactly why I don't like it, funnily enough - it's a regression, anti-intellectualism. Smart music shouldn't be thought of as something to avoid.

The whole point of punk is that anyone can do it, it's not a deliberate movement against "intelligent" music.

I remember me and my mate were just browsing youtube one day looking for new stuff, when we came across Viral Grounds. We're both big death metal fans and were absolutely blown away by just how good these guys are.

To embed youtube vids, type [ youtube=XXXXXXXX] (no spaces).

Replace the XXXXXX part with the characters after the = sign in the address bar of the video you want to embed.

so for example, the video you want to embed is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsHCCIf2GUk

you'd put the part i've bolded into the XXXXX part. Hope that makes sense anyway.

Heh yeah one can debate the semantics here it's true. I guess I call it Punk Rock solely because I do not listen to actual Punk, so my definitions aren't as intricate as someone who is confronted with that more frequently. But I think you are right - "pop punk" might be more appropriate.
The Cat Empire,
Also when I read this band name it automatically reminded me of that song by big Black... off of Songs About Fucking...<.<
And just for completeness...some songs (though you probably won't like it - it's kind of ska-ish)

I've heard that before. I believe it, as far as the bands go. But the attitude it started is one that makes me wince every time it's brought up - you know, people who say what Sacman did, except meaning it as high praise. They're entitled to their opinion, of course, and I won't tell them to change - but it's totally anathema to mine.

Not a fan of Allin - I've only listened to a handful of his songs, and I can't say they're my thing. His lyrics, in particular, just rub me the wrong way. Having said that, I see what you mean, and I'd definitely agree that attitude is an essential aspect of punk. Simplicity tends to ring true, as well, barring a few notable exceptions (The Clash comes to mind).

By the way, kudos to posting "Little Fury Things" a few posts up. That's always been my favourite Dinosaur Jr. track.

It's not about avoiding smart music, it's about the emotion and passion of it all... it's violent and angry but it's honest and that's why I like it, not because it's primal or simple... but because it's very much an extension of the culture that created it... the lost, the misfits, the outcasts... and it's an expression of their every feeling from a brash dismissal of the society that rejected them to the musical expression of ones social need to be accepted...

Emotion is something that is lost when you step into needless overproduction and when the need to show technical skill and song writing ability outweighs the need to utilize music as an emotional outlet...

I can listen to any of their stuff on repeat but favourite song is probably 99 biker friends

I came across them more recently but I love them so much
song: answer is near

another more recent discovery but they just song brilliant.
song: I am a hero

This is the band that got me into Japanese music in the first place so they deserve a special mention.
song: Buiikikaesu

I love this band and have listened to their albums on repeat many a time.
song: Broken Hearts, Torn up Letters & the story of a Lonely Girl

I couldn't narrow it down to 5 so I'm adding this one at the end. This isn't a band or person, Exit trance is a collaboration and has produced nearly 20 albums of remixes
song: Theme of Jurassic Park (Remix)

What others call "Needless overproduction" is generally about where I think good production starts. Some simple emotion can be great and affecting for me sometimes, but what I value most in music is the ability to take me to another world. Intricate production, well-placed effects and electronic instruments all contribute to this for me - stimulate the imagination, conjure up these fantastical images and impressions that can't really be done by any other medium. Simple, catchy 3-chord stuff is great, but IMO, it can never be genius because it doesn't do this for me.

'From Mars To Sirius' and 'The Way of All Flesh' are my favourite albums.

Favourite albums are all of them. '10,000 days' probably just takes the cake though.

Old Muse is best Muse, 'Origin of Symmetry' and 'Absolution' are their best albums.

Gotta love all their albums, but I think my favourite is probably 'Watershed'.

Favourite album is 'Crack the Skye'.

Between the Buried and Me - Prog Metal - Animals As Leaders - Jazz fusion/Prog Metal -
Blotted Science - Bizarre Prog/tech metal - Meshuggah - Technical Death Metal -Lamb of God - Metal (groove metal?) -Abney Park - Steampunk?? -

The Black Album was the start of a long downward slide...
