I would say that Terraria is pretty frustrating for new gamers.

I love Terraria. But I'm also a 16-Bit enthusiast.

Whatever I happened to have lying around that they liked the look of. I don't want to show them the best games every because it's no fun to be told - hey, that was the most fun you'll ever have, let's step back a bit. Especially don't want to get started on that 'arty' game crap, first and foremost comes what interests them.

Fighting Game:Street Fighter IV/Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 (Ultimate)
Total Fun:Ratchet and Clank 1-3 (Any one will do)/Jak 1-3/Sly Cooper 1-3
FPS:Team Fortress 2/Far Cry 1
Sport:SSX (The new one coming out)/Forza Motorsport 1/PGR 3
Hack n Slash:Bayonetta/Devil May Cry

This is for variety to test what someone likes

Now Pokemon is one game I have to actually agree with. That game was so many children's introduction to gaming addiction it's not even funny.

I seriously can't believe, so many of you are saying portal. Don't get me wrong, it's a great game, but Would likely just confuse a newbie.

I think the perfect choice is lego star wars

Number of characters does NOT equal variety. BlazBlue has one of the most varied rosters of any fighting game, since every character is very unique. It still would probably not be the best game to introduce someone to games with. It is pretty niche.

Agreed but you can be eased into it if you have played a few other games before, also as far as FPS goes it's more welcoming than diving straight into gunfie

Super Mario Bros. 3.

Fallout 3.

Final Fantasy 6.

Assassin's Creed.

Professor Layton and the Mysterious Village.

All really good games that show a lot of variety in game play styles and elements.

Here's a vid of the most different from each-other SF4 characters facing each-other:

And here's a vid with the most alike Blazblue characters facing each-other:

Now, which one hits you as most varied?

Child of Eden

Fable the lost chapters

Limbo

Kingdom Hearts

A shooter (but i can't think of one i'd start them on) maybe TF2

mainly because non gamers are afraid of "GAMEINESS", that very bloody escoteric science fictiony stuff so prevalant in the medium. I think my choices are like games we see so many poeple who don't like games playing (fruit ninja, the sims, mario,Zelda, Cod respectively).

my choices i hope would be showing the scope of gamings potentional and diversity(covered most platforms) while being fun and not alienating them.

EDiT; I wouldn't drop them into a sandbox either I rarely see people who don't play games manage with them, they just don't know where to go.

League of Legneds for a basic MOBA game.
Sure if we want to get them to hate online games quickly. MOBAs bring out the dickhead quicker than any other game in existence.

Devil May Cry 3 (vanilla)
Dark Souls/Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Blazblue
Steel Batallion

If they can beat/master those games, they can take on anything.

These are opposites.

I thought of this question because I was wondering what games would be the best examples to a newly-aspiring game developer on how to make a game
Becoming a game developer requires at least a 4 year degree in computer science, or graphics design. Most developers don't get to add creative input for their first 5-10 years of working in the field. They just do what they're told and crank out code. Even experienced ones who have proven them selves often become relegated to making shooter after shooter.

For FPS: Call of Duty or Borderlands
For RPG: Either Pokemon or Dragon Age Origins
For 3PS: Gears of War or Mass Effect 2(Noobs won't appreciate the inventory system ME1 has)
For Platformers: Super Mario Galaxy
For Puzzles: Portal or Braid
