Nope. My GOTY never goes to games I already know are gonna be amazing.

This year, my GOTY goes to Catherine. My Handheld GOTY goes to Radiant Historia. Both games I never anticipated to become utmost favorites of all time for me. I knew I'd like Catherine, but I didn't think I'd fall so in love with it.

Highlights for those who dont want to read whole article.

The Side-Quests Are Better
Dual-Wielding
The Graphics Are Amazing
A World Living Around You
A Story Not Etched in Stone
F?king Dragons

Skyrim looks 10 times better than Oblivion can't wait :D
The game isn't out yet, so I can't say it IS the GOTY to me, but I am hopeful that it WILL be.

We haven't SEEN ANY sidequests, so you can't say that.

Dual wielding has been shown, so that can be used as valid.

graphics do not make a game amazing. It does look FANTASTIC, however, that is a useless check on a GOTY.

We haven't seen the world growing and living around us in the game yet, so you can't say this as fact.

We haven't seen the story, so we can't say this. However, since the story revolves around dragon shouts, which comes from stone word walls...so....There is my joke! the story revolves around stone.

Dragons are in the game. Yes. I'm not sure that this makes a GOTY either.

Every game I purchase, I hope will be "GOTY". Sadly, this hope rarely turns into a reality.

I really don't understand all the "proclaiming" of Skyrim as GOTY and why people want it to be. I've hated a ton of those GOTYs and personally, I could care less what is and what isn't. I just hope the game is fun so I can add it to my library of games that are fun to play.

I'm shocked and appalled at the OP. I'm just picturing him as a hyperactive 13 year old practically wetting himself with excitement for November 11th. His reason for posting this useless thread was just to relieve some of the tension by getting some discussion started about the thing on his mind.

I'll tell you what, Skyrim will "win" game of the year for only one reason:

1. Hype

That's all it takes, and that is all it will need.

I have one question.

During a battle you?re having with wandering giants, a dragon swoops in and before you have a chance to react, picks up the giant up and pulls him hundreds of feet in the air before dropping him to his death.

The dragon then flies off, slowly arcs around and thuds down in front of you before snorting fire your way while the screen is still shaking. A nearby adventurer gets involved and while the fight is going on, the dragon snaps at him, eats him and throws the body away with a quick yank of his head, the adventurer?s shield and sword sent flying. All this happens while the battle continues in real time without any obvious sign of the scripting. It is a genuinely jaw-dropping moment.
Has ANY of this been proven? Until it has, I'm going to call shenanigans.

This.

GOTY is determined by sales figures. It hardly means anything these days, as four or five games in any given year can throw out that appellation at the same time. "Game of the Year" should really be understood as meaning "One of the Best-Selling Titles of the Year". It isn't the crowning achievement it used to be back when Half-Life the First was declared GOTY. Skyrim won't ever reach the heights of Myst or Riven, either.

It's just like when you buy a paperback at a bookstore and the cover says "NEW YORK TIMES BEST-SELLER!" in huge freaking letters. It doesn't mean anything.

I'm going to break up the chain of "skyrim is way overhyped and it won't live up to expectations much less get GOTY" posts. I'll bet a good amount of money that Skyrim will be GOTY, not because I'm so amped about it (which I am),but just because pretty much every game Bethesda has ever put out has taken that title. Even Daggerfall was GOTY if I'm not mistaken. Not sure about Arena. The new Fallouts, though? Both GOTY. Morrowind, Oblivion? GOTY.

Anyways, everyone saying that they're just meh about the release of skyrim knows that, deep down, they absolutely cannot wait for the new ES installment. I mean elderscrolls is a staple of gaming. If you don't like it, you're not a true gamer.

I guess its just the cool thing to do at the moment to say 'lolz skyrim sux'.

edit: the one thing I am worried about though is the fact that the PC version will be a port from console. It would sadden me greatly to see the game dumbed down like several others in the name of being console friendly.

Yeah people should learn to stop hyping their excitement for games like this and wait for it to come out, there's always room for disappointment. Personally I'm probably going to wait a month before I get it so mods have a chance to fix whatever stupid little gameplay 'tweaks' Bethesda decides to include this time around. Maybe the vanilla game will be fine as is, but I'd be pretty surprised.

It's not out yet, nobody has even played it and it's already being rated game of the year. It's the top rated game when I turn on my 360.

Damnit people, seriously. Wait until the game is out to make that call.

Edit: This is not a hate post, I will be picking up a copy of the game myself. But come on people calm down, it's not out yet.
Agreed. Im excited for Skyrim but i refuse to t all crazy for it. Oblivion was damn fun but not quite the great thing everyone claimed it was.

fixed. graphics arent that great... yeah, texture models will be good and all, but over all to me it'll be on par with oblivion. also, im betting SOMETHING goes wrong with the game, and they have to fast ship a bug fix day one.

1. The side quests were bad, so the bar wasn't high to begin with.
2. Welcome to modern gaming Bethesda!
3. Lol, not hight standards ey?
4. Haven't they said the same thing about Oblivion and Fallout 3? And those games weren't really impressive in that regard.
5. Meaning what? There will be a good and a bad ending? Big deal.
6. Ok, that's actually pretty cool

Other than that I don't really see what's so great about it, AI still looks stupid and animations still could be ALOT better. I'm just hoping glitches wont be so ubiquitous this time around.

While Skyrim is hyped, I do belive it'll be good. And I'm the guy who thinks Oblivion is a piece of crap covered in vomit (mind you, I loved Morrowind and liked Fallout 3). Bethesda is at home at making open world RPGs and they seem to have learned their lessons with the past few games. They know what works and what doesn't, and Skyrim seems like it might be the culmination of their work. The only thing I'm worried about is that it might end up being too dumbed down for no good reason. Also, on a personal note, I hate snow in games, so the setting is a bit offputting for me...

In absolutely no way were oblivion or FO3 disappointments. They were colossal successes and brought way more fans into both franchises. I'd be willing to bet the success of FO3 and New Vegas alone is whats keeping the Fallout name in the media at all, and all thanks to Bethesda. Even if YOU were disappointed in those games, look at the sales, look at the reviews, look at the discussions, and look at the diehards who have pumped 300 hours into their argonian thief or space cowboy and say with a straight face that those games were not successes.

One thing that concerned me from that long gameplay demo... I don't know maybe the guy had some developer 'cheats' turned on, but anyone else take note how at the end the guy fought his way past 2 mammoths, 2 giants, and then 2 dragons all in succession? Overpowered much?

I don't know whether or not the Escapist already does this, but we ought to have a "popular vote" game of the year, akin to the style of the March Madness popularity vote.

hate to say it but, effectively, besides a graphical upgrade and some really, tiny changes, like duel wielding and the more varied voice acting, it is exactly the same game as oblivion and I found that game really broing. You just have to look at the Ai, (which is stupid, in case you don't pick up on my dislike of the game) To know that the game will not be challenging and the only thing that will be interesting will be the side stories because Bethesda cannot write a complex and long story for shit.
