It's a wet dream of a wet dream, basically.
It's just Twilight fanfic with the names changed.
I can't say much because I haven't read it (and I'm not going to) but what I've heard from my intelligent friends is that it's badly written trash and seems to sexualise domestic violence.

Imagine the absolute uproar of a man had written it :/
(Also it confuses me why the writer is under the pen name of E.L James. I thought it might have been the same reason J.K Rowling did it, to get boys interested as well, but I don't see any guys being interested in smut like this o_o)

EDIT: I've seen people read it in public. They're probably think "hehehe, I'm so naughty!"
The thought of someone opposite me on a train getting horny over a book creeps me out a little.

First off, if I ever write fanfic and it becomes an original book, I'll just never tell the origin story, ever. That way, no one can make fun of me for it.

Second, I haven't even read the book, but I will give 50 Shades points for having BDSM become a thing that the mainstream American media feels is okay to have in a bestseller. It's progress, even if this is just on the level of progress that "I Kissed a Girl" was for having LGBT be okay to sing about.

Still, it's a step.
A step backwards from what I'm reading.

It seems all the BDSM present is treated as a symptom for the male protagonist's inability to love and his childhood issues.

In other words, if you're into BDSM you should probably see a psychiatrist.

First, I will just say this...I did like the books. *raises shield*

Now, while I did like the books, I can easily see the parallels between this series and the Twilight series (a series that I hate with a passion). Sure, there are differences. Anna has a bit more personality, she's not a (total) puppet, and has stood up to Christian multiple times instead of lying down and taking it. She has a stronger will and is willing to take matters into her own hands.

However, it doesn't stop me from rolling my eyes at most of the crap in the book. There are sex scenes abound in the first book and while there are fewer sex scenes in the later books (thank goodness), they occur in situations that don't make any sense (after giving Christian a haircut, after a car chase, after Christian has nightmare). Plus, like Bella, Anna is initially portrayed as being completely and utterly inexperienced in sexual matters. Am I to believe that this 22 year old single woman has NEVER masturbated? Never watched porn? Really? I don't think so.

And if Christian hadn't gone out of his way to prove his love for Anna multiple times (or had gotten so upset after she left him), then he would be a complete bastard and Anna would have been displaying the biggest case of Stockholm Syndrome since Belle fell in love with the Beast. While Christian's overbearing behavior never reaches Edward-like levels (Christian only states his boundaries and his wants; he's never physically kept Anna from her friends and family and Anna has enough smarts to realize that Christian wouldn't dare), it does reach stalker territory, and in this day and age, people tend to get arrested for the crap Christian pulls.

Once the series actually had a discernible plot (e.g. Who's trying to kill Christian? What happened in past [his mother, Mrs. Robinson, etc]?), then it was a pretty okay read...once you get past the nonsensical sex scenes and the annoying, almost teenage interactions between "Mr. Grey" and "Miss Steele".

Emma Watson is the frontrunner for the lead role if a film is made of the books, which would be a travesty anyway, but she's a very talented actress, a decent and intelligent person, and has a brilliant career ahead of her - why in Offler's name would she willingly be associated with something like 50 Shades Of Grey?
Ooh ooh ooh! It's been ages since I got my Ms Watson targeted flak cannon out! Finally another excuse to get it out of storage!

So will she be tying up the protagonist with her eyebrows? Maybe when they talk about a lead role they mean as one of the flat planks of wood the protagonist will be tied to? It's nice to see she'll be handling her co-stars wands on screen as well as off this time! I thought Hermione Granger didn't like riding on broomsticks? Something inappropriate about the incarcerous spell!

Oh man, I've been saving those up ever since her clothing line tanked.

I kid, I kid. I'm looking forward to another great performance from Ms Watson's eyebrows and the monotone she thinks is a normal speaking voice. Maybe in this movie she'll go the same route as HP 4 and always look like she's in tears or screaming about something? Always nice to see the range and depth of a young actor from plank of wood to plank of wood that's on fire.

Okay I'd better stop for real now.

Like Ms Watson should

As for the books? I tried to read the first one, because my sister was reading them and insisted they weren't porn (sue me, I didn't have anything else to do) and I couldn't even finish the first one. And that's coming from someone who read both Twilight and The Hunger Games

The only way I can describe it is the way it is. It's an erotic fanfiction written by a subpar writer based on a subpar original series (Twilight) and it has absolutely no business being published, read, or in fact existing. It doesn't even fall into the 'so bad it's good' category. It's bland and mediocre and the main characters are respectively tabula rasa and a prick.

I don't believe anyone is saying these things can't be liked.

However these books are being praised into the sky as a work of literary mastery by a fair amount of people.

I love Avatar (the blue cat people one). I greatly enjoyed that movie. But it's not a master-piece like some other movies out there. It's filled to the brim with tropes and really is about the most generic formula possible. But I still greatly enjoy the movie.

It's more about the hypocrisy of people who condemn porn yet praise books as these.

It sure sounds like porn from what my mum described to me.

Her: "He has a sex room!"

Me: "You mean a sex dungeon?"

Her: "No... It's just a room with lots of sex stuff in it."

Me: "So it's a kinky sex dungeon? Does he have handcuffs in there too?"

Her: "What? No! Who uses handcuffs for sex?"

Me: "So having a sex dungeon is cool, but handcuffs? OH MAN THAT'S STEPPING OVER A LINE."

Her: "Would you use handcuffs for sex?"

Me: "Well, no, but-"

Her: "Well then."

Me: O-e *eye twitch*

I've seen middle-aged and old ladies reading it on the bus too, it's kinda creepy....

Who reads porn-esque stuff on public transport? Who?!?
Apparently middle-aged and old ladies on the bus.

But yeah, I've sen women just carrying this book around, proudly displayed. I'd still get weird looks today if I carried around The 120 Days of Sodom or Lady Chatterly or Long Hard Ride but women are allowed to carry around the goodreads no.1 erotic novel of the year? Weird.

From what i heard so far it's just...well, embarrasing that this is a "thing".

Not because of the eeeeeevil perverted stuff the movie talks about or something like that, but it's so obvious why the novel is such a bestseller.

It's essentially the same thing as me and a few friends calling a sex hotline because people saying naughty things made us giggle....but that was when i was TWELVE YEARS OLD.

I mean, come on, a book with kinky perverse sex.....there's tons of them! That's the thing about books, they get away with shit other media can't, but there are also enough that have actually worthwhile stories to go with them...or not, but then at least they aren't on the bestseller lists for months.

It just frustrates me, just when we're finally over the whole twilight thing we're right back with this washed down oh-so-risky shit.

And as a german, it's the SECOND time i see a book getting undeserved universal praise just for saying naughty words:

50 Shades of Grey? "What's that" I wonder aloud...

*One google search later*

*vomits*

I have seen burn wards with more sex appeal than that piece of what seems like a teenager trying to write BDSM Twilight... Oh, wait...

As for the discussing porn thing I'm pretty confident that for guys it's more of a pub, after work discussion but you get it...

This is the only book series with "kinky fuckery". (No, seriously, they actually use that term at one point)
The only book that advertises itself with words that sound like how a four year old talks perhaps.

Because, as i said mentioned: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feuchtgebiete
...and i'd guess if i search long enough i find passages of Steven King books that are more risky.

They don't seem that essential to me. :p

So what im asking about is what is your oppinion on people openly discussing this.

I just find it wierd that people find it acceptable to basically discuss porn in a work situation or on facebook. i would get odd looks and probably be fired or atleast talked too if i started talking about the last porn video i googled
Maybe you're young or something, but that's not exactly something new. It's more the rage than most thinly-veiled erotica, but it's the same level.

I honestly have absolutely no interest in this series, and much like the Twilight phenomenon, if I just ignore it, it will go away. That said though, if anything I can now read "The Story of the Eye" and "120 Days of Sodom" out in public without shame, although odds of the averge person knowing what either of those novels are about is pretty low.

It really baffles me that this has become a thing. Why is everyone so interested in making fun of this book? There's a million other weird, badly written porn novels out there, why are we paying special attention to this one? Yeah it's adapted from a Twilight fanfic, but why is that a reason to talk about it? And just think about what we're all doing. We're giving a significant amount of attention to a Twilight slashfic. Does that not just make you want to kill yourself?

It's because it's currently a bestseller, and there's so much praise for it from bored housewives. If nobody cared about it, there wouldn't be people making fun of it.

And, really, killing yourself for talking about how bad something popular is?
Oh god, I had no idea it was actually popular. Now that makes me want to kill myself.
