I think there are some serious questions to be asked about why the child thought it was a good idea to do it.

He should have mandatory therapy. Contrary to popular belief, eight year olds know what they're doing before they do it. They don't wander through life in a vegetative state. This kid knew that he was murdering something painfully, and enjoyed doing it. He will most likely kill people later if he isn't helped.

Newfoundland should be carpet bombed from the air as a result of this tragedy.
I know, right! Finally a reasonable person in this entire thread.
C'mon guys. You're no better (in fact, I'd argue much, much worse) than that dude who said, "It's just a dog".

I think that it's a dog so I don't really care.
I hope this was sarcasm. Really I do...
Yeah, me too..

Also, this reminds me of The Curious Incident of (something) dog at nighttime - or whatever the book was called

I hate all children so I'd like to see him die in a scenario similar to the end of Final Destination 2.
Ok that was a bit sick although I still hate children. He should at least be spanked till his arse falls off.

Doesn't anybody wonder what was happening to that boy in order to even consider that? there is a posibility that he's acting out child abuse or some sort of personality disorder. People are gonna worry about the dog and the kid is gonna grow up to become a very disgruntled postal worker...

Therapy. I mean, equal punishment (forked to death) would be my immediate response because I like dogs more than people, but therapy seems like a good enough middle ground.

That poor, poor dog...

Reminds me a bit of a biology class I was in. Some kid braged about blowing up frogs and my teacher just went berserk about what those kinds of kids could do in later years. Although the question I am now wondering about: Is it good just to kill a frog because you need it to pass an exam and not kill it by blowing it up? Don't want to be preachy here, but if you are so against the killing of animals, why still eat meat?
It's funny how there seems to be a thin line between cows on your plate and saying: "Yeah, that is why they are bred for." And an domestic animal that is too cute to harm.
Don't get me wrong here, I am against any form of animal cruelty but I just want to know what you guys think of it.

There's a difference between a pet and foodstock. If a family kept a pig as a pet (there are people who do), and a kid killed it, I'd be just as pissed.

This really pisses me of givin my dog may be getting put down.

This is an ass hole.
I'm sorry, I really am. I know what that's like and it's hard to do.

Since I like dogs more than people I hope this kid somehow gets what's coming to him and his life ends in a similarly violent way. (We can say things like that about adults, so really there is no reason we can't hate a child for their actions.)

Uhm, wait, no charges were filed on the child or at all?

I don't think there should be a punishment even though he deserves one. Think about it, prison would make sense but he's too young, and he has no money for fines. I think he needs heavy counseling possibly asylum-esq treatment because this is serial killer behavior
When minors commit crimes in the US, the legal fault is the parent's, and from what I heard, most other countries have laws similar this as well. In the US, aggravated animal cruelty can go up to Class C Felony when the animal is killed, which the penalty is a fine of up to $100000 or imprisonment of up to 40 years or both. Also who the hell sees an eight year old child outside in the middle of the night doing stuff and not immediately feel the need to find out what? Even for the sake of curiosity.

OK. a little off topic here: i read the story i get to the bottom and the first thing i see: a frickin facebook LIKE icon that said "51 people like this story! be the first of your friends!" ok. dude. i understand wanting to show people but seriously!? LIKE!? this is why i am starting to hate facebook.

now on topic: thats seriously disturbing. a kid like that has serious mental issues and should be put in an institution (institution is the nice word for crazy house)

I don't know how anyone can think it's okay to kill an animal for fun, no matter what age you are. As long as I can remember I've always known that killing is wrong. It's not something I was taught, it was just something I knew. Everyone's different though. That kid should be punished. It's up to his parents to do the right thing. If it was my kid, I'd disown him. What a little shit.

Please explain the difference to me then, because I sure have a hard time understanding (no sarcams intended). So if they bred *insert your favorite pet here* to be on your plate, you will be okay with it, right?

The sad thing is that even if this person was an adult, not much could be done about it. In the UK at least, animal cruelty laws are appalling. The maximum sentence a person can get is 6 months. People need to get over the bull shit culture of "because it can't talk, it's not that bad". I don't mind if people's lives are ruined, they really do deserve the same sentence of crimes perpetrated against a human in instances of deliberate and unnecessary cruelty.
