Again, Space Sims. I've been wishing to see a Freespace 3 for god knows how long now. Good to see there are still others who feel the same way. Freespace 2 looked great in its day, still holds up surprisingly well, and makes me wonder how awe inspiring a modern space combat game could look. I had fantasies back in the day of FS2 of a future where we would be seeing a beam cannon slice a capital ship in half, and being able to see the insides of the ship deck by deck, with little men being sucked into space. Unfortunately the genre died, and it never happened.

Second place goes to first person point and click adventures a-la Myst. Shut up, I know, there were lots of awful Myst clones, but I still love the awe inspiring scenery and landscapes those allow. The technology is here to have a fully interactive world (like RealMyst, only better) so I wish that somebody would come along and do that. Puzzles that challenge your brain and scenery that blows your socks off.

Simple and realistic samurai or sword fighter. Like Bushido Blade. No health bars, 3 stances, and some miscellanous other moves, selection of real-life weapons from swords, daggers and spears.

It's all in timing and strategy. Can be incapacitated, get lucky, or even use dirty tricks. Brilliant stuff, although maybe not suited to tournament play, but still extremely fun in friendly matches. God I miss that.
Check out the Deadliest Warrior game. It's not Bushido Blade but it's really close.

I'd cough up internal organs for Descent 4 :(

As popular as MMO's have gotten, I'd expect a Star Wars MMO to rake in huge cash. I'm an MMO hater (pointless grind, no reward, have to interact with people... lots of reasons) but if a Star Wars MMO allowed a pilot character type and a space sim where you could fly escort, or transport, or pirate in open space... I'd be there. I'd be there on day one.

Hmm...I was going to say turn-based RPGs, but Nintendo's RPGs still use the turn-based system (at least, the ones I've played), so it's not quite dead. It'd be nice to see it become a little more common though...

Honestly, I think the retro style comeback that's been popular with platformers would do wonders for Squaresoft. Simplistic combat system and class system. Cut back on the cutscene budget a bit. Spend that money on crafting a big world, filled with towns and dungeons.

Turn Based RPGs. Also, not a whole game, but a game with text adventures as a side quest. Some of the best moments of Lost Odyssey were the dream sequences, and I'd love to see more modern games do that.

Side-Scrolling Beat 'em ups.

I will endorse Viewtiful Joe to no end.

Space Sims arent dead theyre just not mainstream. If you have Steam look up the developer Egosoft, they have done nothing but make space sims for 12 years.

The afore mentioned space combat games fall under the flight sim genre, which like space sims just isnt mainstream enough to be common.

Also saw someone say 3D platformers... Super Mario 64, Sunshine and Galaxy anyone? riiiiiight.
OK he said Donkey Kong, but as far as im aware that was only ever a 2D platformer after DK graduated to his own series and is getting a franchise reboot in good old Nintendo optimism.

Classic 3D Platforming. Very few games are managing to keep this genre alive, most notably Super Mario Galaxy, but it seems the other gems of the 64 era are ether dead or returning as over-the-shoulders, rpgs, or... or...

Yes! Galaxy is great, and Sonic Colors is pretty good (at the very least, it's a step in the right direction for the series), but most of the platformers I've picked up this generation have been 2D. That's great; I'm glad they're making a come back, but I don't want to see 3D vanish. And, when it gets a spike in popularity, it'd be nice to see some variety between linear games and exploration games. It seems only one style is popular at a time...

Space Fighters Similar to Freelancer.... There are a few recent ones out there (last 3-4 years) out there, even a few MMO's but there's really not that many and even less getting attention. Might add 6DoF games in general to the end of that as they appear to be dying or dead as far as I'm aware. I'd also like to note http://www.spacesimcentral.com/ is a great place for finding information on Space Sims and the like, for those who haven't already come across it.

Mecha - Mech Warrior style games.... there was one new one being made that I know of but it seems to have come to a halt from legal issues IIRCly and there's a crysis mod by the name of Mech Warrior Living legends and that's about it that I've heard about in many many years.

God style games such as Black and White (Number 1 was best one I've played due to multiplayer aspect) Black and White 2, beyond good and evil.... don't remember hear much of anything else.

Old school top down beat em ups like double dragon.

Side scrolling platformers (I know Mario and DK just got remakes, but I want more newer ones)

Awsome to Epic Story - Point and Click Adventure games, Monkey Island/Kings Quest/The Dig/Day of the Tentacle/Return to Zork etc

Vehicular combat - like Carmageadon style

Creative play games I suppose like Garrys mod.... Love that game.

That's about all I can think of off the top of my head though...

I wouldlike to see turn-based tactical games like Silent Storm and Jagged Alliance. There is JA3 in process of making i believe tho...
Also weird genre of what Sacrifice was. Briefly enhanced (by adding tower, etc) in Overlord. More of these please!

On a side note, i would like to see any games of any genre which are not screwed by (bad) port from consoles, which seems to be modern trend :S.

To the few people listing shoot em ups, you could turn to the Touhou series or CAVE games if you don't mind bullet hell. Touhou is 12 games into the main series with a few extra games on the side and I believe the demo for Touhou 13 is gonna come out soon. Thing is that you still have to ship from Japan as far as I know. On CAVE's side, they don't seem to be all that well known in the U.S. (assuming that's where you live). On the other hand, they did manage to finally localize a game to the U.S. and maybe Europe (Deathsmiles) and another game is available without region locking and is also on XBL Marketplace (Mushihimesama Futari).

The genre isn't dead, it's just very niche. Outside of bullet hell however, I haven't seen anything recently.

Gotta agree with OP on this one, Space dogfighting games like Colony Wars were awesome back in the day. One can only imagine what they'd be like with today's technology. Fucking awesome, that's what.

Might want to look into a boy and his blob, Sonic 4, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Muramasa: The Demon Blade*, Limbo, Megaman 9 and 10, 'Splosion Man, Dorito's Crash Course, Super Meat Boy, Rocket Knight, Cave Story*, Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril**

I'm aware that a good number of these are existing franchises--which I guess you have a problem with, due to the "I want more newer ones" statement, but they are worth looking into. For the record, NSMBW and DKC Returns are new games, not remakes (a boy and his blob is the only remake mentioned in this post), and both are good. In fact, the new Donkey Kong is easily one of my favorite games. Check it out!

*These are really Metroidvanias, but the genres are closely related.
**This, I kid you not, is a new game for the NES. How cool is that?

Naval battles where you design the ship you'll be captaining into combat. I've been waiting for some sort of Naval Ops game to come out for the current gen. consoles. Waiting in vain...
If you don't know what Naval Ops is, you should probably look it up. That and Ace Combat 5 are the only reasons I still have my PS2.
