"I could use a friend to say they love me
But I'm gonna make a sound you cant forget
And afterwards I swore that I would haunt you
Now I'm way to tired to give a shit"

-Right Away, Great Captain

or...

"Hey, you beauty supreme
Yeah, you were right about me
But can I get myself out from underneath
This guilt that will crush me
In the choir, I saw our sad Messiah
He was bored and tired of my laments
He said, "I died for you one time, but never again"

-Brand New

a lot of the Format gets me too. and Modest Mouse, for whatever reason.

Faith can move mountains: of that I am sure.

That's from "Get Me Through December" by Alison Krauss. I'm not religious, so I don't think of it as a "the Lord as my Shepherd" thing. I think of it more as that motivation and optimism which I so utterly lack. When I hear it, it makes me aware of that and strive to correct it.

The Lyrics:

How pale is the sky that brings forth the rain
As the changing of seasons prepares me again
For the long bitter nights and the wild winter's day
My heart has grown cold my love stored away
My heart has grown cold my love stored away

I've been to the mountain left my tracks in the snow
Where souls have been lost and the walking wounded go
I've taken the pain no girl should endure
Faith can move mountains of that I am sure
But faith can move mountains of that I am sure

Just get me through December
A promise I'll remember
Get me through December
So I can start again

No divine purpose brings freedom from sin
And peace is a gift that must come from within
I've looked for the love that will bring me to rest
Feeding this hunger beating strong in my chest
Feeding this hunger beating strong in my chest

Get me through December
A promise I'll remember
Get me through December
So I can start again

Fate is so unkind
Now I should have known
Blind leading the blind
Reaping what I've sown
If it all amounts to nothing
Why then am I standing in this line?

Overburdened - Disturbed

This song makes me think about all that I have experienced, and reminds me to stay good and clean in life :).

The music if you don't know the song.

"Please keep me in mind"
- Well I Wonder, The Smiths.

Well I wonder do you hear me when you sleep,
I honestly cry
Well I wonder do you see me when we pass,
I half die.

Please keep me in mind.
Please keep me in mind.

Gasping but somehow still alive,
This is the fierce last stand of all I am.
Gasping, dying, but somehow still alive,
This is the final stand of all I am,

Please keep me in mind.

The lyrics can be interpreted several ways, but I prefer to think that Morrissey is talking to everybody, and nobody in particular, rather than a single person. No rubbish whining about lost love or how unfair the world is. Just a simple request, delivered straight from the heart. You don't have to love me, or even like me; just know I exist.

Also, I plan on having this engraved on my tombstone.
"Love, peace and harmony,
Very nice, but maybe in the next world.
"
- Death of a Disco Dancer, also the Smiths

I tried so hard and got so far
But in the end it doesnt even matter
I had to fall to lose it all
In the end it doesent even matter

And these two songs talking about two different women in my life right now.

"So tell me now if this ain't love then how do we get out?
'Cause I don't know
That's when she said I don't hate you boy
I just want to save you while there's still something left to save
That's when I told her I love you girl
But I'm not the answer for the questions that you still have"

Savior- Rise Against

I will have this stuck in my head at least once per day.

lol Maybe I'm just a sexual being, but I don't get the same feeling from reading the lyrics as I do when hearing the whole song. To me they're just rhyme-y words with absolutely no context without the music.
Hé. :p It's funny you mention "rhyme-y words" though. I've always thought of a song as being a poem written by music... in some way (man, that's a little poetic in itself isn't it? =/).

Dead by Voltaire has some good lines. I don't live by these words, but I still thought it was well-said in the song.

"He already knows what you want
And decided that you didn't need it
So don't bother asking for cures or an answer
God is the one who gave you the Cancer!"

It's not that I don't totally agree with you. Both are important when it comes to music. I like the way someone once said that a song is like being in love; the music is the physical interaction: the sex, but the lyrics are everything else: that which speaks to the heart.
All I'm saying is, is that this thread is about one of those two things. And I like that. It gives people on the forums a chance to really talk about whatever the message of a song makes them feel.
But might I suggest that you make a separate thread, if "the bigger issue" is what you feel should be addressed?
Oh, you misunderstood, this thread is meant to specifically deal with just the lyric in itself. I meant a lyric that works without music too, because it's so personal and so important to you.

Point taken, though, and I do agree with you completely.

Ooooh-Kay... I think that's what I pretty much said, but I'll run with it. Either way, just to clarify: I was talking about emotions concerning the context of the lyrics, not the melody with which they are paired.

Right, I realize that now. Im not entirely sure what happened there.. Wait, was I trying to reply to someone else?

Anyway, "Oh, I misunderstood".

No Incubus huh?

"Suffering is a theme, but reckoning is the only reason why we suffer at all."

-Surface to Air

"Earth to Bella. You're treading water sucessfully...but are you really? Don't you want to see the deep? It's not so hard. Just forgive yourself and feel the water open in..."

-Earth to Bella Pt. 2.

Also this entire song:

I have cried listening to that because I know it's true for me but I can't bring myself to do anything about it
