That's from "Get Me Through December" by Alison Krauss. I'm not religious, so I don't think of it as a "the Lord as my Shepherd" thing. I think of it more as that motivation and optimism which I so utterly lack. When I hear it, it makes me aware of that and strive to correct it.

The lyrics can be interpreted several ways, but I prefer to think that Morrissey is talking to everybody, and nobody in particular, rather than a single person. No rubbish whining about lost love or how unfair the world is. Just a simple request, delivered straight from the heart. You don't have to love me, or even like me; just know I exist.

lol Maybe I'm just a sexual being, but I don't get the same feeling from reading the lyrics as I do when hearing the whole song. To me they're just rhyme-y words with absolutely no context without the music.

It's not that I don't totally agree with you. Both are important when it comes to music. I like the way someone once said that a song is like being in love; the music is the physical interaction: the sex, but the lyrics are everything else: that which speaks to the heart.
All I'm saying is, is that this thread is about one of those two things. And I like that. It gives people on the forums a chance to really talk about whatever the message of a song makes them feel.
But might I suggest that you make a separate thread, if "the bigger issue" is what you feel should be addressed?
