Children of Men, I think. Nobody I've met likes it, yet I'm in love with the movie. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes a serious flick which hasn't been corrupted by Hollywood or general idiocy.
Also loved children of men. If you analyse it, the protagonist is not my favourite action hero, he never even picks up a gun, yet I still love the film just for it's well, the way it is done, it's approach to action and drama with such incredibly high stakes while at the same time sounding and feeling like all of human misery and futile conflict which we see in such a detached way on the news and documentaries.
My personal favourite is any one of the Original Star Trek films, with the Original cast, not the next Generation cast. They were great and right up there with Indiana Jones and the original Star Wars as classic, witty and exciting action adventure flicks of late 70's and 80's. Yet most people dismiss them as mere fanservice for obsessive and out of touch star trek nerds. I wasn't a Star Trek fan when I first watched the films but I was a fan after I'd watched them. I'm amazed they aren't held with more reverence.
Other personal favourites:
-Leslie Nielsen's Wrongfully Accused: really funny and mostly unknown film, mainstream films have been stealing jokes from this film for the past 15 years and pulling them off worse. IMHO, this film has more genuine laughs per minute than any other film I know.
-Vantage Point: ending was a bit suck and ridiculous at points but doesn't deserve half the hate it gets
-What's up Tiger Lily: most people haven't even heard of this film. It's basically a hilarious redub/recut of a crappy B-movie from Japan. I laughed so hard it hurt.
-Rescuers down under: if you say "But it's just a kids cartoon" you just haven't seen it.
-Rush Hour trilogy: i'll get the most hate for this, but it you accept that these are dumb movies and just enjoy yourself, that is what Bret Ratner is good at. Hannibal Lecter and X-men films... he should just stay the fuck away.
