Wait, what?! I'm confused here. If you don't like beer, drink something else. I love fruit juices, so I drink them. I don't know what kinds of people your trying to impress but the people around me never mind that I don't go alchy-hol. You don't need it to enjoy yourself, hard as some might find to believe that. (On a side note, champagne is delicious)

So, like many not-manly men, I'm cursed with the inability to get past the taste of beer. I've never made it past half a bottle on my own. I'm normally able to take a good first drink, but after that the taste limits me to just sips at a time. Between me and friends, we normally just have beer.
Any suggestion on how to get past the taste, or condition myself to like.
My best advice is try different beers. You might have to pay a bit more but you can taste the different types. Me personally I hate the taste of bud light, miller lite, pbr, or any of the normal beers my friends drink (I'll drink coors and thats about it when it comes to the average beers) But I love a tall pint of Guinness or a good cold Shiner Bock.

I'd just like to point out that in France it is (or at leat was, when I was 16) perfectly acceptable for a 16 year old to drink in resteraunts, never mind in their own home. Not every country is America.

Well that's going to have all the effect of some stern words against an oncomming train... still, really wanted to say it.

If you really want to drink beer for the sake of saying "let's go have a beer" then it's worth keeping at it, everyone I know says that you eventually start liking the taste. Unfortunatly my tounge is broken and I never reached that stage, but cider is a good alternative (very different taste) and still considered manly enough to escape most mocking (you can still say "let's go have a pint"). As with beer though, there are lots of alternatives and different flavours; for example a proper pear cider will taste very different to an apple cider, but a 'commercial' pear cider sold in bars just so the company can use a different adjective will be brewed to taste as much like apple as possible. Experiment, it's fun! But not all in one night, that hurts.

No fool! Sorry but it had to be said. There actually so many beers in the world that chances are if you keep looking eventually you will find one that you like. But in the mean time most people when they go out etc. drink mainly spirits and mixes, even the people that like beer. Why not buy some smirnoffs or other mixes as they taste really good. Also if it helps I like to skull the my first beer and then go from there, makes the rest taste a lot better. In my friend group only three of us actually enjoy beer so I'm trying to get the others on spirits and stuff and they go for it a lot easier.

killians is a good and manly beer if you don't like that then bud lite lime but know that you may be mocked for it.
To extend on this, only drink Killians on tap. When you drink it out of the bottle, you really miss the accented Coffee, Chocolate, and malty flavors it offers.

If you're trying for a good starting beer, it takes time. But I can recommend trying any white ales. While they are heavy, they are still technically "light" on the stomach and palate, as well as producing good flavors.

Why do it if you don't like it?
But if it's about the socializing, "which I could understand" there are many varieties of beer, if you've tried light try dark, if you've tried earthy try hoppy, if you've tried pop try wheat, I'm sure you'll find something you can stomache eventually.

Why not try some of the more classical beers? Newcastle has a rather nice flavor I find...

If you're drinking American beer, thats your problem right there. you gotta make sure it's cold, ice cold, like to the point of the top layer being frozen. you can't elt it sit too long either, that makes it worse.

Just try to bring the drink to your mouth slowly. Don't just wing it up assuming it'll go to the right spot. Practice in front of a mirror so you can see what you're doing, that might help too. I'm sure you can manage to take a drink instead of splashing it all over your face or in your eye if you keep at it. Good luck!

For some reason when I read the title I thought of drinking problems as seen in Airplane!
Hehehe.

Seriously though, I think the problem is to not drink it if you don't like it. Just drink something you do like. Drinking for the sake of "oh lookit me Imma havin' a beer!" is stupid. If you don't like it, don't drink it. And if your friends pick on you for it, do one of two things depending on the situation. If it's just light-hearted ribbing, suck it up. That's what friends do. But if they're being massive assholes about it, get new friends.

Get a long island ice tea. Its cold and delicious... and depending on how its made it will knock you on your ass.

I love going to a bar next to all the beer drinkers, ordering one, and watching as the bartender hefts up 6 different bottles to fill my glass.

Seriously though, worst hangovers ever, drink a ton of water after.

The simple answer - drink what you like the taste of. If you don't like beer, drink something else. Screw what others think.

More complex - if you can't change your drink, add to it. Lots of people actually add things like blackcurrent cordial to beer to make it more palatable.

Finally - experiment. Note that being British, there's more to beer than beer, and ordering a beer will get you anything from a weird look to a slap depending upon the location. Ciders are classed as beer, and are a lot sweeter, so many prefer those, and they are good for mixing. Stouts are often quite good (and manly) - you can even find some blends that taste like chocolate if you are lucky enough (I don't drink beer, but I'm tempted to try that one myself if I can find it).

Failing all else - get drunk first! When drunk, you will drink anything, whether you like it or not. So if you are already half cut by the time you get to your mates, only drinking beer will never be a problem. Of course, drink too much, you might never make it to your mates...

For me I used to hate the taste of beer too, I could have a bottle or some but after that I didn't really feel like having anything else. So instead I used to drink hard liqour exclusively like whisky etc. Then after a while I got turned off by the taste of it and then beer was a relatively easy switch over!

Well that depends.

In the UK we have beer, ale, cider, all are pretty manly, even port or rum is I guess. Then you could try the somewhat dubiously manly wine, or mixers or...

But having said that I haven't seen as much choice for example in Serbia where they have lager, and that's about it :/

No, it's only a problem if you're drinking bad American beer. The stuff that makes it abroad is, generally speaking, the bad stuff - Budweiser, Coors, etc. are all low-end and give our beer a bad name in the rest of the world. The problem is, those companies are the only ones big enough to be able to financially support shipping overseas. We have tons of great beer from smaller breweries that blow those out of the water - and blow away plenty of European brews I've had as well. Try some beer from Gordon Biersch, Mendocino Brewing Company, Sierra Nevada, or even Blue Moon if you like flavored beer. But it's ridiculous to try only a couple types of our beer and then dismiss all American beer as being bad, especially when we have hundreds if not thousands of microbreweries along with the other companies I named above.

To the OP and anyone else saying they dislike the taste of beer, it takes a while. How long depends on how much you drink and how frequently, but it probably took me like 6 months or so to get used to the taste. In retrospect that seems ridiculous - why would you subject yourself to something that doesn't taste good in order to get used to it? Once you do, though, there are really few things that will beat a good cold beer, especially on a warm night or after a long day. And a good hot dog with a good beer accompanied by friends is the best part of going to a baseball game.

As many people have said dont drink it if you dont like the taste, even though it does grow on you. Not liking beer doesnt make you less of a man, try malibu mixed with milk its an amazing combo. Im not sure what drinking is like in the states but here in New Zealand I was dinking from 15/16 its pretty harmless really unless you do something stupid or dont watch how much you drink and fall over and choke on your vomit etc. etc. etc. In summary (haha) try more expensive beer, different spirits and drink only if YOU want to.

Cheers Mertle the Turtle

*edit* sorry if I rambled a bit, im tired.

Yay Cider. Grew up in Scrumpy country myself. Good Scrumpy is just nicer than anything else although you have to be careful with it as you can down it like anything and then all the alcohol hits you at once.

I feel the urge to bring up Snakebite & Black. Most pubs won't make it for you and it has a nickname of Diesel because that's exactly what it looks like including the weird foam on top.

my brothers friend bought a slab and just forced him self to drink the whole thing. now he can drink beer.

my suggestion is not to force your self to drink something that tastes like piss. bring your own drinks. if it was me and i was going round a friends house to drink id just bring a 6 pack of scotch and cokes. so maybe just bring what you like to drink.

i have trouble with beer too. the only bottle of beer i have ever finished was James Boag. maybe try that if you can.

if you look at the top beers inside the US, pretty much every one of them is terrible. Also, if Miller Lite is beer then i have a sweet garden hose to show you.
