It sort of depends on what your major uses for it will be. Game-wise, it's library isn't as extensive as the 360's but it does have some nice exclusives (Demon's Souls, God of War, MGS4, etc.); there's also downloadable PS1 games if you have some fond memories. The online play may not match up with Xbox Live (I can't really tell any major difference in performance but I'm not online much), but it's free, so you don't end up essentially paying for the console over and over again.
My primary use for the PS3 is a DVD player, but that's mostly because I've lost a lot of interest in console gaming (PC, I want my life back!). As off-putting as the price may be, I'd say it's a worthy buy, especially if you don't already have a DVD/Blu-Ray player. Perhaps its greatest strength is it's multi-use nature.
