The PS3 is faster. Much faster. That is indisputable. However, as far as actual graphical capabilities are concerned, it is not all that much better. They built it like a supercomputer, NOT a gaming console.
Part of the huge boom of DVD's came from the PS2, if we can remember that far back. Having the DVD player in there, while it caused problems for the hardware in earlier models, allowed people to get the DVD format launched. Without the PS3 Blu-ray would have a tough time getting started.

In the game development department, I think the PS3 is a lot like the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast was an amazing system that was a generation ahead of its time. Sega couldn't make enough affordable units and games that were different enough from the PS1 and N64. As advanced as the PS3 is, it's ahead of its time. If I do end up getting a PS3, it won't be until they can earn back their 3rd party support and get some good exclusives that are more than eye candy.

By the time the Xbox 3 or Wii2 comes out, PS3 will be dead in the water. Developers will move on to the new systems, not stay with an old one that was never easy to work with. Plus, by that time, nobody is going to buy a NEW last-gen console when new systems are coming out. The sales right now already show the PS3 as a failure. The consumer has already taken on the other systems.
That is why for a very long time the playstation 2 was still kicking every current gen console in the ass with sales.

The PS2 was actually a good system, and it sold well upon its initial release. Plus it had a massive game library, which was well received when the prices dropped to the point where they were basically giving them away. PS3 has none of these going for it.

You forget that the dreamcast was owning the first playstation. Furthermore do you think that the Playstion 2 had the library that is has now when it launched? It had dick when it launched just like all consoles, but oh wait the Playstation 2 had virtually no competition at all and it launched first...Do you really think that 120million Sony owners are just going to drop off the face of the Earth this time around? If you actually look at the numbers you would notice that none of the consoles is experiening supreme domination. The 360 has been out two years and is pushing something in the order of 10-15million and the ps3 is somewhere around half that...But "omg it's dead in the water!!!!!!!one"

"omg it's dead in the water!!!!!!!one"

I'd like to think of myself as more articulate than that.

Actually, if we're talking about "supreme domination" the Wii is effectively stomping on everybody. Just a thought.

And besides, say we do have 120 million Sony owners, no developers are aiming their games at Sony because its impossible to program for and nobody owns one. It's basic economics, why spend any resources on a non-existent market?

I'm an avid PS3 supporter, and not because of my bias (I work for SCE, but got my PS3 months before I even got the job.)
I got my PS3 on launch day and haven't regretted it for a second. Sure, it was more expensive but I felt it was worth it because of the increased specs and in-built Blu-Ray player. The machine has a lot of potential and that potential is starting to be shown with the calibre of games being released, like "Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction" and "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune" (which I finished playing yesterday - fantastic game!) and shall continue to rise with the release of 2008 titles like "Gran Turismo 5" and "Playstation Home"

And to end on an interesting note: Playstation 3 outsold the Wii for the month of November in Japan, and is continuing to outsell now ^^

The 360 seems too much like a fish: You have to keep it at a special temperature and you can't pet it (at least when it's reading a disc).

You know that's a joke. I really couldn't care who won the fight at the end of the day, so long as I got to play fun and interesting games.

You didnt take into consideration that the 360 has been out for a lot longer than the ps3. I won't lie, I personally LOATH the 360. (I'm what some would say somewhat unforgiving when it comes to counsols.) I don't think when you get a system it should break on you or explode in your face. If they take all that time to make the systems then it should be ready when it hits the shelfs for consumers. I know their will always be that one faulty one but they shouldn't have to do recalls on it. Anyway! I'm not a personal fan of the ps3 either. It is, when you get right down to it, a mini computer. Period. You can't deny that fact. It costs as much as a real computer and functions like a big stick of ram and memory. A nice big expensive stick of candy for a gamer who wants the looks and half the function. Though I believe the ps3 is far better than the 360. Once again, mini computer. the 360 cant even be put into the same group as computers in my view. Also I believe the games take longer to produce because they can now do so much more with them. They don't want to give you a game that only uses half of what the system can really do. (Lets at least hope so >.<) Giv en time the ps3 will have just as many games and addons as the 360. Quality takes time and as a gamer im willing to wait it out for it. The 360 focuses on quanity not quality. The only reason the WII is so big is because it is new. The ps3 offers more for serious gamers in the long run. you want the whole deal then the ps3 is the one to offer it. The 360 has just been around a long time and people fear change. The Wii is just fun, not meant for serious gamers. Its for everyone who just wants to have something to do. People who play the Wii don't look at graphics and such. They are just amused that If you swing your arm it makes a reaction on the screen. Its Like why people buy the DS. its convient and still fun.

so mrrow ^_^

i got an xbox 360 simply because i can't play on the playstation controllers for more than 10 minutes without my thumbs feeling like they're about to explode.

The 360 controller, while not perfect, is considerebly more comfortable. Having to stretch both thumbs over to the middle of the PS2 controller was crippling me!!

You ll see the difference in one year when you compare "home" to the 360 dashboard ;)
"Home" is not going to replace the XMB as the system dashboard. It's a Second Life clone that runs as a program on top of XMB.
yes, I know that and I also know that the 360 wont have anything comparable in the near future.
To you it might be just a second life clone-but I tell you there are millions of people that love the "sim thing" and prefer invitig other "sims" over to show them their trophies or virtual condo instead of a boring gamerscore number.

the 360 is winning the "war" there is no way of denying it, they have a better and wider line up of games, their online system is almost perfect and the community is strengthening everyday.

the ps3 has the potential to make extremely beautiful and immersing games, we're getting near the point where there isn't much room to increase the quality of the visuals of the game so hopefully more developers will focus on making games with new and better gameplay and more immersion that can easily be brought about by the inclusion of more complex physics systems which i think the ps3 is more capable of handling. i guess what im trying to say is everyone is saying "if the hardware on ps3 is so great why don't the games look better" and i think someone said in a previous post that the graphical capabilities of both consoles are similar but what sets the ps3 above the 360 in my book is the fact that it has the processing power to create incredibly intricate systems that will just shock everyone. hopefully sometime soon the developers will get their thumbs out of their arses and do some coding for the damn thing and maybe we can finally see something that will truly give gamers a feeling of awe.

on a final note i actually think the whole war is pointless because PC will always be better. :D

This is, I think, the first time that I wished that I had more experience around the PS3, because without that I can hardly contribute to this discussion.

The red ring thing is bad. Like, nigh-inexcusably so.

The Xbox dashboard thing is a great idea, but I really, really wish that the Box button weren't so easy to accidentally hit when you're going for Start or Select Back.

I also wish the dashboard menus weren't so frickin' slow. Okay, click, boop, fade-out, whoosh, fade-in, wait for controller to become responsive to dashboard input again. About a whole second per function. Not cool. I know ATMs that are faster.

Indeed. I'ts an entire hemisphere sticking out over the top, very awkward.

Also, unless you hit that button, there's no indication of battery life. And, with the controller's life being relatively short, this can prove problematic. Getting cut out of multiplayer matches sucks.

it's impossible to have a "rational" discussion when comparing the ps3 to the xbox 360, at least in my experiences. Personally, i think that the xbox 360 is the better system of the two, at the moment. But the ps3 has potential, as soon as they improve many things such as cleaning up the gameplay, not releasing games that are clones of other games, coming up with a new franchise to further exploit, and by MAKING BETTER GAMES!!! i think the ps3 at the moment has a horrible library, the only decent exclusive games in their library is UT3 and Uncharted. People are going to bring up warhawk and resistence, so let me address them. The gameplay for those games are bland and restricted, they were games that were released for this gen when they should've been released for last gen. they bring nothing new (like halo 3). The way I view the ps3 is this, the ps3 is like a Hollywood Blockbuster, it promises you great things and you get disappointed and left feeling cheap. The ps3 has so MUCH potential but the fact is, right now it is SHIT. Just look at the exclusive games and when one compares a ps3 game to the xbox 360 equivalent, the xbox 360 version (as well as xbox 360 games) runs better and that's all that matters. Sony really needs to make some changes, i mean for god sake, YOU'VE BEEN USING THE SAME CONTROLLER SINCE 1994. Anyways, not to make it sound like i'm bashing the ps3, the ps3 is mediocre when compared to the xbox 360 at the moment.

GO WII!!!!

I disagree. The controller starts flashing the warning lights well before it needs replacing, giving you plenty of time to plan the changeover and I've never once been stuck in a multiplayer game with dead batteries.

A bit of a question: since this is supposed to be a rational discussion, could someone recall the highlights of the 360's first year of games? I mention this because if we're discussing the machines themselves rather than ahh which is currently the most slam-bangin', such discussion would benifit from timeline comparison, no?
Oblivion, Condemned, Gears of War, Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter. Probably a few more if I turn the lights on and look at my game collection.

yes, I know that and I also know that the 360 wont have anything comparable in the near future.

True, Second Life is popular, but the majority of it's players are not the sort of people who play a lot of games, and probably won't buy a games console for a different version of it. Gamerscore and achievements do what they are designed for. They fuel competition between players even in games with no online content, because it's simple to compare your game list with someone else, wherever you are in the system and whatever you're doing with it. Home will not be simple to do that with, it will be long and drawn out. It might be a fun toy, but it won't revolutionise the console experience.
