Quite a few games have this, mostly ones from Battlefield/Battlefront. Instead of giving the other team a kill, you give your team -1 points and respawn.

I know that in css if you write in the console "kill" or something like that, you'll die.

As long as it gave a 5 second long animation of you placing the pistol in your mouth that could be interupted by the other team killing you then i would be fine with it

There are lots of games with suicide buttons. I, in fact, bound it to "k" in CS:S and ended up accidentally killing myself. I think that button should only be used in situations where you're stuck in the level geometry or something... not to keep someone else from killing you.

Oh yeah, and Metal Gear Solid 3 had one.

In that sort of situation, twould be better to pull the pin on a grenade and scream, "LUB LUB LUB LUB LUB LUB LUB!!!" while charging in a kamikaze style attack.

that would suck, imagine yourself on the enemy team and your enclosing on an enemy, would you want them to take the cowards way out or would you want your kill?

It's always been a feature in Battlefield games, you just go to one of the screens (map screen, pause screen, it's not always constant) and hit "Suicide". It's usually just to get back to a spawn point quickly or change class.

Oh yeah I know about that. By "suicide" button I meant a proper "press X to put gun to head" kind of suicide button.
I wouldn't want it to be mapped onto the in-game controls... 'cause I use those for more useful things.

Lots of PC FPS games have a console 'kill' command or somesuch which kills you instantly., nothing new.

99% of the time though you don't see death coming. And if you do you'd be dumb not to at try taking them with you.

Actually, no. Mech Assault 2 has it. It still lets you die with the right thumbstick.
Really? Damn, must have forgotten, what with the pretty explosion way to die >.>
But I believe I remember it now, yes...
Especially on New River City...
All it does in MA2 is just kill you. you just kind of collapse.

Actually come to think of it, I can see it having a practical use. Say you have a really big map, and there was only one person on the team left in a wipe out style death match. Rather than waste time having the other players slog across the whole map, other guy kindly suicides himself to get on with the next round.

Kind of assumes your map design sucks though, if people can't find each other easily... I doubt many devs would admit to having a suicide mechanic for that reason.

Source engine games like Team Fortress 2 and HL2 Deathmatch always have this option;

bind k "kill"

It's useful in badly made mods too, for committing suicide in glitched areas or zero death condition scenarios.

Bf1942 has one, and so does the rest of the series I think. It is mainly used when you bail out of your plane in the middle of nowhere. Probably one of my used buttons in the game (I have to bail out of my plane alot)

I only know a suicide button existed in Battlefield 1942 and BF: Vietnam. It wasn't for killing yourself before the opposing team could, but for killing yourself if your plane got shot down in the middle of the desert or jungle and thus walking to the next base would've taken hours. Made sense to me.

A suicide option in CoD for example would be cheap I think, pro teams would just fire a shot from the sniper rifle and then, if not killing the enemy, commit suicide. Pointless

There's the /kill command in the Quake and Doom games. For the most part, using /kill in competition is against the rules unless it's properly warranted. For example, if you fall off the map, and don't want to wait 10 seconds for the fall to finish, then you /kill.

I see two outcomes:

A. If there is no penalty for suicides then you'd have griefers allowing the other team to get two shots in and then killing themselves.

B. If there is a penalty (e.g. -1 points) for suicides then you'd have greifers killing themselves repeatedly to screw up their team.

Either way I think it's a bad idea.
