Hi first ever topic created so if I make mistakes I am sorry.

So I am of the opinion that there has not been a good Final Fantasy since FF10. 10-2 was really bad but I played for the bonus ending because I wanted the happy ending. FF 11 I will not judge because i am not in to online games. FF 12 was just Return of the Jedi.

Final Fantasy 13. Words cannot describe how much I hate this game. The characters are crap, the story is crap, the combat is crap, the endless corridors and hallways are crap. It looked amazing and Square were hoping it would distract us from the fact it was crap. I mean how annoying was hope. I hate that kid. And Snow. Snow is the biggest douche in the history of douches. He is the king of douche land. He is a super douche. If you got the all the douches in the history of the entire universe and combined them to make a super, mega, ultimate douche Snow would still be more of a douche.

And just when it looks like the series might find its feet again with FF verses 13, which from the little stuff that is out looks like it could be good, they say the are making FF 13-2!

So that is my rant about one of my favorite game series. Please tell me I am not alone in thinking these things.

I tell ya FF12 would've been an excellent game if they had just cut out Vaan and Penelo and just followed Ashe or Baltheir/Fran. Those two were just added weight that had the misfortune of being the main characters when Vaan had nothing to contribute to plot after 5 hours into the game and Penelo NEVER had anything to contribute to anything.

As for 13? Meh... I didn't think it was outright shit but it wasn't keeping my interest enough for me to finish it... so I'd call it pretty bad but I thought it wasn't the abysmal abortion people make it out to be.

And I couldn't bring myself to hate Snow. Because when I heard that voice I heard Yuri Lowell before anything. And I have nothing but good to say about that character.

9 was the last great game in my opinion. 10 was ok but nowhere near the level of any of the previous 6. I agree with you on everything else though.

Al through I said that 10 was the last good FF 9 is my favorite. It was the first FF I played and in speaking to other FF fans I have come to the conclusion that the first FF you play will always be your favorite.

Lol my first was 8, so that's not always true.

Damn, 12 years that has held up and now you destroy it. And it worked so well to.

Not by a long way, 8 is my favourite, followed by 6. I played V first.

In fact I rate IX quite low. Just didn't grab me the way the others did. XII had too little story and lots of meaningless bits. XIII had too much story compared to the gameplay, but I still think it was good, just couldn't play it in huge chunks like the others.

I'll be honest. The last (main series) Final Fantasy was FFX. Why? XI should've just been called "Final Fantasy Online" or something, it just doesn't fit in. XII was essentially "Final Fantasy Tactics 3: Return of the Twatty Kingdom". XIII would be better if they cut out the gameplay and made it a movie. Sure, it'd still be as bad, but then it would've just been "another bad FF movie". And XIV... well, the less said about that, the better, but I think we can all agree that it wasn't a good game. Or even a game at all.

And, as is mandatory in any Final Fantasy related thread, my favourites: Final Fantasy VI, for its story, atmosphere and combat system, and Final Fantasy V because it had the best job system of any of 'em.

FFX was my first FF experience and even though it didn't get to me in the first couple of hours, it really grew on me and ended up being one of my all time favourite games. Although I agree with a lot of the criticism people have for the game, and I love Spoony's rants on spoonyexperiment.com, I loved every second of the 200+ hours of gameplay I spent on that game, and I actually managed to feel really connected to the characters.

Then X-2 ruined EVERYTHING for me - even though the combat system was actually quite good, that game just destroyed everything I loved about FFX.

So I didn't play FF for a while, until XIII came out. I bought it on the release date (something I rarely do), confident it would be awesome. And besides from the beautiful environments and cutscenes, I was so disappointed.
I completed it, but I haven't touched it since, and usually I just want to keep playing a game once I've finished it.
XIII is a no-brainer, more repetitive than anything I've ever experienced. But it could have been so good. I think the story was okay and quite immersive, but it was just so predictable, and the characters were so bland. The combat was simply mashing 1 button most of the time, and the fact that the game contains nothing but linear corridors and repetitive battles is appalling.

I'm not sure whether I'll ever buy a FF game again. I'm afraid the franchise is killing itself at the moment.

I actually liked the convoluted story in XIII. Was pretty original. Space aliens(that's what they were really) create a planet above a planet and inhabit it with their own personal guinea pigs who rebel against them. Kind of cool.
Perhaps, and if they bothered to characterize any of the guinea pigs well, it might have been worth a damn at its core.

Yeah well I have to agree, FF10 did have a good story to it. But as for the first FF you play is your favorite, my first was 7 and yes I loved it, but then the movie came out and Dirge of Cerebrus, and then Crisis Core came out(which wasn't a bad game). What I'm getting at with this is that FF7 got blown out of proportion. Right after that I played Tactics, and in my opinion I enjoyed Tactics the most.

As for the ones after 10, I never played 11, 12 was alright and I never finished it, 13 I tried to force my way through the game but just couldn't. The characters were so mismatched and complicated, and don't even get me started on Hope.

I?ll never understand the problem people have with FF twelve.
Neither will I. I really liked it as a game. Some of the random elements about finding things were a little weird. It would have been a much better game if there weren't faqs and strat guides around. Then the random would have worked for it.

I've been playing the Final Fantasy series since FF on the NES and to be honest, its all mixed. There have been some hits and some failures, some that stand out in the mind and some that require some coaxing to emerge from the back of the brain.

But its the playstation generation of games that stand out more for me, FF7, FF8 and FF9 left the biggest imprint. Maybe its because I reached that age where I became aware of the narratives and stories rather than just "ooooo colourful block goes beep".

I even didnt mind XIII, despite all the bitching that goes on about it, I still managed to get 50 or so hours out of it and enjoyed the experience. Maybe this XIII-2 is a pennace on behalf of Square-Enix to build upon XIII's world and deliver something a bit more fulfilling to its audience.

I absolutely adore every single Final Fantasy game up to no.9. I don't like IX purely because of the artistic choice. Maybe one day I'll play it...

But there will never be another great Final Fantasy game. Final Fantasy VIII failed pretty horribly in a lot of aspects, but it took HUGE chances. And in the end, I think it worked brilliantly. 13 took no chances at all, and in the end, that was the biggest risk.

I'm actually quite glad I missed the PS2 generation of FF games. FFVII-IX are some of my favorite games ever so at the time I was devastated I would miss out on FFX - eventually I got over it, and while I still love the older FF games I really aren't that interested anymore with how the series progresses. I got FFXIII with absolutely no expectations whatsoever, and I think it's because of this that I quite enjoyed it.
