Ok I am a bit biased because Im crazy about football, but come in my place..
How can someone who is unfamiliar with the genre understand and appreciate the diffrences in core gameplay? for example in Fifa10 every "good" player could easily abuse the mechanics and ruin other people experience..
Im not a game designer and I cannot know if that could have been fixed with just a patch..

Also I said in my OP that the major diffrence is the online play, atm in FIFA11 you can find a game 11vs11 people in less than a minute and play with amazing latency, which in previous years it was the wet dream of every fan.. including me..

You also need to stop caring what other people think so much, Yahtzee and Bob don't like sports games, so why do their opinions matter to you so much?
Because as I said I respect them as critics and well.. I wanted to talk about it x_x

Sorry if this isn't terribly polite, but you wanted an honest answer as to why this attitude exists, and this is what I think. There are people who are smart who like sports (plenty of them) and plenty of people who can enjoy mainstream games, and more serious ones, do nobody should think I am nessicarly dismissing them. In the end though there are far more people as customers for gaming out there that can't really appreciate games beyond this level, than serious gamers and those who like to play on both levels.

When you understand the thought processes involved, even if most people don't (or can't) articulate them, it's easy to understand why discussions on this subject can get so nasty.
I appreciate your post really and ofc im not offended in any way, you have been extremely clear and helpful about this "dispute".

I buy baseball games, but not every year. Maybe every three or four years.

I can certainly understand why someone would like sports games. It's the same reason people like guitar hero/rockband; It's simple fantasy fulfillment. IMO, the problem is a lot of the nerd crowd (myself included) never really had big dreams of blowing up in the NFL or the like, and thus don't enjoy the games.
Spot on man... you know I didnt go pro just cause of bad luck.. *giggles*

FIFA nut here as well. I think when you play these games hours on end the tracks do matter. For me the big thin in 11? Adding authentic songs and chants to grounds so I can hear Vamos United when I play as my club. That experience is worth the 30 dollars I paid back in November for it.

Tell me this, aside from the roster, is there any major difference between say NHL09 and NHL10? or Madden09 and Madden10? (or *insert your favorite sports franchise here*09 and *insert your favorite sports franchise here*10) In this age of DLC, is there really any need to release a entirely new game every f*ing year?
I don't know about those games but I play the NCAA football games and from the 2010 game to the 2011, they made a giant change to the way you run with the ball. In NCAA football 2011, the running is WAY smoother than any of the previous games, it's almost to a point where it's not fair sometimes for the defense. The change in the running mechanic has made run plays a lot better, they updated the computer's pass defense as well. It is a lot harder to do hail mary passes, because in previous ones you could just throw it deep all the time and catch the ball pretty much every time.

Obviously the target group for sport games its like a closed club..
Its not like Halflife which everyone loved and still loves...
Sport games have this tendency of either love-hate-ignore.
Thats what originaly annoyed me..
That only sport fans can fully understand the little things that make a huge diffrence in gameplay.. like dribling , passing , team AI etc..
Especially those that are intrested in online gaming..

I like sports games, I used to play Madden. Then the Blitz games came out, and Madden sucked all the balls to me.

Basically, what I'm saying is I miss Blitz because my xbox no longer lets me play it. :(

But for the most part, I think that an 'every other year' release schedule would be better for most EA sports titles.

Meh, I still don't see the need to release the exact same game every frikin' year; aside from, you know, draining suckers of their hard earned money of course. But whatever, I don't really care. I'm not like Bob, it doesn't really bother me that they do this. I think there are trends in gaming that are far far worse than this and much more worthy of getting upset about.

I think the last Football game i've played like an addiction it was FIFA 98 xD.
Even so i understand the theme and im too of the opinion like Yahtzee and Bob that EA takes much profit for not too much work on every release.

Maybe im not a hardcore fan of sports games, i rather go outside and do em', but even so i think like a gamer that, with every release there should have a considerable change, or its just EA grinding money, yeah, i seriously believe that EA games sports fans deserve a lot more. Have seen friends of mine buying other after another and even the layout stays the same. that's a shame.

If people buy it, more will come.

I do not question this way of thinking, it works. I personally don't understand it, however. As a runner, I wouldn't want to play marathon simulator, with realistic small water cup action.

What I'm saying is one man's treasure is another man's Captain Bland's Monotonous Adventure, and that's the way games will always be. If there is a market, games will be made.

Don't worry, I play madden and catch shit for it all the time. But buying Call of Duty after Call of Duty after Call of Duty....that's just cool.
Well said, well said. I follow this one philosophy about other people's games. As soon as I start bashing someone's choice of games I instantly open the door for everyone else to shit on my own choices in games. So, for anyone who likes to project their social inadequacies on other people for the choices they make in "un-leet" games, (which in themselves represent the exact same industry, skills and innovation that enable you to play something like Fallout for hours on end whilst wearing nothing but underwear and a shirt of cheeto dust) I say: it's only a game dude, it's only a game.

what they meant was that between FIFA 200X and now, not that much has changed (as in control,s ,gameplay etc.)(with the exception of console and MINOR graphic tweaks)

Saying the roster is the only thing that changes in sports games is like saying only the hairstyles change in JRPGS, or the only thing that changes in FPS' is the shade of brown.

Oh wait, people do say that? No way, are people narrow minded douches, disinhibited due to the anonymity of the internet?? No fucking way!

Yeah, I hate when it becomes cool to rag on something, but that's life. The elitism between computers game genres is as bad as the elitism between those DC and Marvel fans

Well, I'm loving this years Madden and will get next years too (Danny Woodhead for the cover!)

Most fans of sports games tend to appreciate the little details that change every year, and I can't imagine sitting around with Madden 11 when people are playing Madden 12.

I love football, so naturally I love FIFA. I got into the series about 09 when it started to get a lot better, and 11 is hands down the best footie game out there.

I also experimented with some new sports titles: Madden 11, NHL 11 and NBA 2K11. A whole new sports game is quite hard to get into, especially if you don't know the sport, but I especially love NBA and now I am becoming a basketball fan as a result, I find the gameplay more fun (if A LOT harder) than FIFA.

People who complain about minimal changes in sports titles clearly don't play them. It's like if you didn't play Call of Duty but they all looked the same to you, so you think they suck and nothing changes. Each new entry is different, no matter how subtle.

Exactly.. talking about minimal change without really knowing the game is quite ignorant..
I would love to play experiment with madden , but they dont release it in Europe as far as I know.. :S

They aren't against sports games, they're against the exploitation that comes with it. Madden should have a release every three or so years. Everything else should be a cheap (or free) patch to update the roster.
Cmon.. computer hardware changes rapidly every 3-6 months , games like call of duty release every year.. but sport games must be decent every 3 years? Well i cant say it makes any sense.. no offence intented
Console hardware (you know, the systems these games are primarily made for) doesn't change even close to that often. Try 3-6 years. Call of Duty shamelessly milks its franchise, and people call it out on that too (at least Call of Duty has new content each iteration, even if it's markedly similar to the point of predictable).

I relent in saying that if you want to pay $60 for a roster update, it's your decision. Maybe you're more hardcore about football than I am, and that's fine.
However, that doesn't mean you shouldn't become a more informed consumer.
