Can't really be that famous if no-one around here has heard of it.
It is. The Escapist has just been living under a rock of Bioware and Bethesda games, apparently.
This is just one of dozens of Touhou fanmade video that have multiple millions of views.

And no, it's not just fanvideos that get millions of views, gameplay videos get that many as well.

And the amount of videos that exist about Touhou alone, on youtube, probably reach into the millions.
Again, really dedicated fanbase. You make it sound like Star Trek when it's really more like Firefly was before the movie came out; the fans loved it, nobody else had ever heard of it unless they knew or came across a fan.

No, it just shocked me so much it seemed more like a prank.

I still hold that I'm just one drop in the puddle of millions of Touhou fans.

See what I said about lowering your expectations. You have a low opinion of us for not talking about the games you like, so don't expect many people to know what the hell you're talking about.

Oh, hey, I just realized why I thought this thread was about Ranma 1/2 at first; Gensokyo sounds a lot like Jusenkyo. And if you got that reference, congratulations, you are a huge anime nerd.

I know about ranma 1/2 but had to get a kick in the head to recall Touhou

Well, I'm glad, at the very least, that many people seem to be impressed by this.
Not so sure of the "harrharr you thought your weeaboo crap was popular" stuff. Guess I'm a hipster with my obscure tastes.

Funny, I considered stuff like Keio Flying Squadron to be more obscure. And Touhou to be considered fairly mainstream. Cave shooter fans are always complaining about how mainstream and casual the Touhou fandom is. I like both, but I feel kind of overshadowed by all the Cave fans who hate how mainstream and "watered down" Touhou is to them. Talking about Touhou in front of Cave fans feels like talking about Justin Bieber.

Totally obscure. It's not like half of all video games are made there, or something.

Sorry, I forgot to assume that people weren't interested in playing characters that aren't grissly dudes. In 3D.

Seriously though, Touhou is a pretty big internet meme on the level of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Perhaps I have an internet-y idea of what is famous, and tend to assume most folks on the internet are up on internet trends. Kind of like how Burzum feels mainstream, even though Black Metal itself is underground.

Dude, it's not at Brony levels of recognition. It's a small to middling but dedicated fandom; you find them for everything, as TV tropes will attest. Also, the little girl thing is creepy because a lot of the fan art is lesbian hentai, it's not a "Western gamers only like to play as grizzled 30 something men" deal. I know that's holding the sins of the fans against the game, which, especially when dealing with rule 34, is a bad idea, but that's how first impressions go.

Who cares about World of Warcraft recreated in Minecraft? Gensokyo is a far more interesting and beautiful realm.
The drool that came out of my mouth when I first saw this project/video was enough to fill an entire ocean. One of the best 45 minutes of my life. I literally love the Minecraft community for things like this.

This isn't the only impressive thing made for Minecraft, certainly. But it's among the absolute greats. It's a litterally gripping video, and the recreation of Gensokyo is gorgeous beyond measure. The sheer possiblities for roleplaying and the like that things like this create... oh, I need to hurry up and join a server.

Just watch, just watch. It's art. Just like Touhou in general. And I suppose you can feel free to share your own amazing Minecraft creations you've found. This... this is godly though. And deserves its own topic. Actually, the Escapist doesn't talk about Touhou enough. I need a good website to talk about Touhou.

It's also not something super duper new. But the Escapist fails to talk about any of the good things so there's no topic already. Better late than never.
I know of Touhou, though I'm only somewhat familiar with the characters and lore. What I am familiar with, however, is Alice's rockin' theme(s):

The term "Touhou" has more brand recognition than a name of a city found in it's universe.

Just sayin.

I didn't know what this is either. This fanbase is probably not very large outside of Japan. That being said its a 2d bullet hell game. Great... I got one of those for ps2 called Castle Shikigami or something. Not a bad game (can't really play it for long since its so repetitive), except a lot of these games still use outdated coins and lives and crap, and don't feature any saves. One of the reasons its like the only game I've yet to beat that I own.

Nope, genuinely no idea what it is. In fact you mentioning it is the first I've ever heard of it.
If this is true, and I still assert that I'm being trolled. Well... I didn't realize it were possible for my opinion of the Escapist to go any lower.

If you want to look up what it is, all the information is in this thread. Therefor I don't need to tell you anything more. It is arguable the most famous shooting game in the world. Or certainly one of them. And I am one of several million hardcore fans that have been following it religiously for probably around a decade or close to it.
No it isn't.
Outside of the internet Touhou is not that well known.
And MLP isn't a meme, its a cancer.
And implying that people who don't know what it is must only play Grizzled Man games in 3D is wrong and just snobbish.

On topic its pretty cool i guess.
Im still more impressed by the guy who made Rapture, complete with Bathysphere.

All that stuff was in Duck Hunt?

OT: Regardless of whether or not anyone knows what Touhou is, the video is pretty impressive.

Also, could you calm down a bit? You're kind of freaking out over nothing.

Then maybe you should leave? Find better pastures which can truly appreciate your tastes?

Sorry if we don't recognise a town from the obscure spin off backstory of a Japanese bullet hell game made several years ago.

I googled it guys, it's k. Here's a Cracked article on the subject - who doesn't like reading those?

Oh and OP, this the very start of the article:
Touhou Project is a series of Japanese Computer Games. You've probably never heard of it, but that's OK.

Seems like a pretty crazy fanbase though, so this Minecraft thing is nothing in comparison.
Yeah, I'm going to join the club of people who have pretty much no idea of what Touhou is. Also, the OP is quite rude with her comments to people like us.

I learned about it through "Ronald McDonald Insanity"... am I doing this wrong?

Anyways, I tried to track an English copy of it down, but no dice. All I know is that it's the ultimate in Bullet Hell and looks awesome.

This video makes me even sadder that I can't find a copy for poor old me.
