I only grind the TF2-class achievements because unlocking them takes 2 things:
1. Luck
2. Time

and they give me new weapons

I quite liked the achievements on Timeshift, for example "Look What I Can Do!" for walking on water. However there are some achievements that just annoy me, like Zombie Genocider on dead rising who can be bothered to kill 53,000+ zombies.

But achievements add replay value to a game and I love them for that.
Oh, this
Oh, this
Oh, this

Some achievements are good because they make you play the game a different way(The One Free Bullet is an exelent example) but others are just pointless grinding/repeating the same thing to perfection(Seriously... from GOW1 comes to mind here(FYI: it involves 10k lifetime multiplayer kills))

And I agree. I liked Gears of War's "Get 100 online kills with X weapon" because it didn't break gameplay, you just used a different weapon than you might have and it forced you to try something NEW. Although I do make a distinction on one point: a "Be MVP of a match" achievement is fair, but an achievement like G.R.A.W.'s "Be #1 on worldwide leaderboard" is just flat-out impossible for more than 2% of the population to achieve.
Seriously?? An achievement to be the best player worldwide? That's just plain stupid
Getting MVP can sometimes be fair but at least it is reasonable.

Which reminds me Battlefield: Bad Company's achievements to get EVERY award which is pretty damn unreasonable since half of them will almost never occur in a normal game even if you aim for them (kill 5 boats in a game - boats are almost never used in the game and are only on a few maps)

Also i like the MP achievements that entice you to play different classes/game modes/use different guns

Achievments create a sense of exestentialism. Basically what it means is that you define yourself by what you've done or how you express yourselves. To most gamers, achievments (especially some of the harder or weirder ones) shows not only to themselves but to others how good they are at a game, and it's a rare gamer who doesn't like to say to others what he has accomplished or what he has beated.

Because of acheivments, it's easier to define yourself as a good gamer as you can simply say 'look at what I've accomplished in games, my acheivments say that for me'. It's simple psychology. If you define yourself as a gamer, then naturally you would want to be seen by others to be a good gamer, otherwise who you believe you are seems less relevant. By gaining acheivments, you build in your own mind the image of who you beleive you are, in addition it is also easier to define yourself to others as they can see what you've accomplished.

Achievments are not a bad thing, for the most part they're fun to do. But it's easy to see why people crave them, as it helps to define themselves as gamers and show others what they've done (in other words, simple psychology).

Because everyone enjoys trying to be better than the next person. As sad as it is I might look at someone's tag and judge that person just by their score. "Oh wow that guy sure has a lot of points" or vice versa. People want to be better than other people which is basically why people want achievements, so they can do that. They are addicting though I can't deny that.

Achievements are good in my opinion, because they encourage you to do that little extra for that 100 percent completion, even the multiplayer ones are mostly good. In Left 4 Dead, you get achievements for healing your teammates, or giving them pills, which will encourage better teamwork. Although leaderboard achievements can go straight to hell. "Be in the top 10 in the ranked leaderboards." Not very likely.

I think Achievements are a nice idea, they give people more of a reason to keep playing the game long after they have finished it. I personally don't care for them as I play the games for the actual gameplay, and if that gameplay is fun enough I will replay the game a few more times.

I use it to stereotype other gamers. I seem to get along better with people who like to play rpgs and not with the Fps fans. It's not the best way to get to know someone, but it seems to work fairly well for me.

Well if people just feel like playing the game the first time they pop it into their system, i think they r just trying to get a feel for the game. To me achievements r just something to work for after iv beaten the game, but then again some of them get eliminated as yer going through the first time

It's for the reward. Like, if i can do something very skillful that not many people can do,great! But it's even better if i get rewarded for it. Also because i like beating my friends *snicker*

In primary school you may have received stickers, or stamps, or lollies or some similar reward for doing good work, and you might remember them making you feel good inside, and even collecting them for a for a long term view of what you'd accomplished.

It's the same thing here. Achievements pop up and give you that reassuring "Well Done" feeling. And we, as humans, need that every so often to make us feel happier and keep us going.

I'm not a big trophy hunter, but it's nice to have them there. To me it just shows how into a game someone is. For instance, my friend got all of the trophies on Burnout Paradise, so it's reasonable to assume she likes driving games. Likewise, from my Fallout 3 collection you'd realise I like FPS. It also shows I haven't done much on Pixeljunk Monsters.

I believe this was one of the reasons Sony cited for having them implemented. (Apart from the obvious reason) I'm led to believe all games will have trophies in them as of Jan 1st this year.

The reasons for collecting them are many. Most have them have already been mentioned.
