Can you say ''Europe wide protests''? There's no way the people would just take it in the ass without protesting. If it goes through, that is. But whoever came up with the idea should have his balls burnt off, replaced and burnt off every day for the rest of his life.

If i was a copyright holder i wouldn't want anybody to be stealing my products. I know that allowing the goverment to browse our computer is outrageous but i it also is the freedom with wich people is allowed to steal on the internet. There should be a middle point, like monitoring websites like megaupload and software like ares for piracy and deleting them.

Oh god. This is fucking bullshit. However, the public backlash would be huge.
This is why I don't think this will become a reality. Politicians are not complete morons. While many of them are definitely more interested in profit than looking out for the people, I doubt they could think the benefits of this system outweigh the cons.

Aren't you a fascist? This is the kind of thing fascists do, controlling all the actions of their citizens, so on and so forth.

OP: This is just insane. That bank robber analogy is perfect for this situation (I've never pirated anything except N64 roms.) people steal from the internet all the time, it's a shame that we're all going to pay for it. This is a huge invasion of privacy, this proposal will allow them to unlawful search and seizure via our computers. If they want to look at my computer those fuckers better have a damn good reason and a warrant.

Oh. You. Fucking. WHAT.

Invasion of privacy much? Surely a randomised search of your computer is the same as a search of your house with no suspicions or a warrant isn't it? And therefore a crime being committed by the government?

Also, how do they intend to find out which music on my computer is legal and which isn't? I've spent over £80 on Amazon MP3, and another £30 or so on iTunes, and only a few of those songs come with a protective license that stops me playing it on anything I see fit. Other than those few select songs, the collection of music on my computer is practically identical in file format and in how it is licensed. So they could claim my entire library is illegal even if it's not because of a random search they weren't given permission to do?

There's a hell of a lot of human rights shit here that they seem to be breaching.

Now I wonder where Theodore Roosevelt would stand on this issue...[/quote]

He would stand on it's face with the barrel of his shotgun down it's throat...while wrestling a bear.

I didn't call her out on that because I didn't want to seem like an asshole, but...um...

Nevermind. I agree with your points though, but then again, they're not going for warrants. They're just going to take your computer. And your MP3 player. Possibly destroy them.

Well I've never had an MP3 player (My parents don't love me! T_T ) and if I did I'd like to buy the songs to put on my MP3, but my parents are far too cheap to pay for things like that.

And if this godforsaken thing ever gets passed I'm starting the revolution, now where did I put that AK-47 I bought the other day...

This reminds me of the Spanish Inquisition. Except I think it's worse, it's one thing if you try to kill a bunch of people to take their stuff, but it's a whole lot worse if you try to screw the world over to take people's money.

then write a letter to your congressman/woman and request that they too demand the 'ACTA' negotiations be made public. explain how these negotiatons may have far reaching implications giving a non-US body absolute jurisdiction over private property held by US Citizenry with no congressional aproval nor any legal merit.

Of course, trying to persecute internet crimes is like trying to persecute marijuana usage: it will cost ridiculous sums of money, not reduce illegal activity, and possibly flood jails. There's not much point to it.
That's my thought as well. This obviously invades the right to privacy of people which is good enough reason why there is going to be a big back-lash to it. I could see the movie or music industry supporting this as they want to stop pirates somehow, but the sheer amount of people who would face jail time means that the whole process is going to be taxing on the judicial system.

*What* does this serve for the governments? Security to find bad guys? Possibly, but this would bring in a lot of innocent "criminals", like the drug wars fiasco.

It would be scary if this came into play, but I doubt it would be even worth a thought by any politician if they want to stay in the good nature of their supporters.

A. There's WAY more important shit to be worried about other than some fucking kid "stealing" music.

B. Those fucking musicians have enough money, and they'll continue to make FUCKLOADS of money even if people illegally download. This is a waste of time, money, resources and pretty much EVERYTHING; all because a musician is going to have to wait another 4 months before buying another luxury car.
It's not about the musicians. It's about the greedy corporations.

Spread the word, if you want to keep on using the Internet and don't want your ass carted to jail, because chances are if you've used the Internet, you've pirated something.
This begs the question, how do you enforce it and how does it stand up once major corporations start falling foul of it, which they will more so than individual users.

After all, in America more than anywhere the man with the corporate backing gets to be President. If this goes through after a couple of years people will be lining up down the street to throw their money behind the campaign built on nixing it.
For the rest of the world it wouldn't be much different.
