How the hell could they possibly cancel Guitar Hero, and True Crime? And United Front studios for that matter! Call Of Duty seems to be the only thing giving Activison a major profit. Anyone smell a mass boycott?
You forgot that activision has world of warcraft, and they recently gave the finger to wow subscribers with the last patch.

Seriously, I didn't care much about True Crime, and for a long time, Guitar Hero, and many games like it, have been awful. We all know Activision are evil douchebags, but they've done much worse in the past.

If a Valve boycott, with their passionate fans didn't work, what makes you think an Activision one; where people already refuse to buy their games, will?

The problem is that Activision seem to just be disregarding any other titles of theirs in favor of CoD, and when that drys up they don't have any other franchises to fall back on.

Guitar Hero was way past it's heyday and was just a drag to even watch the advert for the next one let alone to play it. You have a god load of Guitar Hero games to pick from now and play to your hearts content but it isn't a series that'll be sorely missed.

True Crime is slightly different. I only played NYC but it was a good game with an decent story. The game wasn't particularly great but you could tell that with a little more work and some better technology it could be much great. The thing is, it's a forgetable series. I'd only occasionally remember NYC when I was thinking over PS2 games I owned and even then I couldn't remember anything that stood out.

Neither series will be missed too much.

People don't boycott.

They don't have any will power.

Therefore the community at large = douchebag.

Very true. It is also one of the reasons I don't want a kindle or an e-reader. If the platform isn't performing well enough they will stop supporting it. At least I'll still have my paper print books!
How could it not do well? Barring piracy, they're still selling books like mad. Hell, if I wanted to, I could replace every book on my multiple bookshelves in my room with a small end table that has my Nook on it. And the thing wouldn't even be close to being full. Convenience is what is selling e-book readers (not to mention that my textbooks for this semester in e-book format would have been almost $200 cheaper). My mother got one and now can carry it around instead of three books when she goes on business. And people who are saying that they're killing the book industry and destroying publishing jobs are just idiots. Books still need to be published in order to be released. If you feel like typing something up and throwing it online for people to read, you're not going to make any money whatsoever. Books will always be printed and always be published.

I guess what I'm saying is that e-books are just another way to enjoy the medium. Much like buying an Xbox over a PS3. You're still playing games, just in a slightly different way.
I actually do know a number authors, publishers, and editors. And electronic media is indeed having a clear impact on the publishing industry. Hence the newspaper companies are raising rates and going to fewer, thinner publications. But physical printing of books is not actually required for publishing these days. Some authors are opting to have their books done in electronic format only. So kindles and e-readers are not a threat to that.

Honestly the largest threat they have is from people putting their new books online for everyone to read for free. That sort of piracy reduces sales and is sorely not appreciated. To get money to write another book the publisher has to make money on the last one. No money, no authors spending time writing.

OT: And piracy as an issue was covered well by Extra Credits. It affects the game industry the same as the book publishing industry. And it is another factor that can get games canceled, although I do not believe that is the problem in this case with Activision.

You're leaving out titles developed by Blizzard.

When they have record sales selling the same game reskinned to look barely different (and still is unbalanced) it's kind of hard to go make some other game.

How dare they not keep beating their already beaten to death franchises into a bloody stain on the pavement. Those evil bastards.

In other news Activision announces sequels to their already beaten to death franchises. Escapist forums crushed under the weight of new "Activision is evil" threads.

Wait? People liked True Crime? I played the LA one, was not impressed at all. As for the Guitar Hero franchise what can they add except more songs?
It's good business to trim the fat.

These games were no longer profitable. At all. Seriously they cost more money than they made.

How is that unreasonable?

Well of course. Just because Blizzard can sell you a $25 mount for a game you pay full retail for + expansions + 15 bucks a month to play doesn't make them greedy fucks. That is only reserved for companies that produce more than 1 game a decade and actually makes games without a number after the name

Activision, one of the oldest of the videogame companies, and now it's finally shown the depths their villainy.

Yeah, because yet another fucking Guitar hero game is exactly what the world needs, right? it's not like Activision have anything better to make than yet more fun karaoke-esque games that are simply cut-and-paste remakes of previous games with some new visuals, one ancillary bullshitty feature added in, and a new song list?
That's sounds a lot like the Call of Duty series.

Cancelling any of those does not make them douchebags.

No, that has to do with the unpaid royalties they still own to Infinity Ward, constant unapologetic money greed at the expense of customer entertainment (yes, that's every company ever, but Activision is the only one with the audacity to state that as their goals outright), their closing down studios they just don't need and leaving all of the devs from those studios without jobs.

Guitar Hero - Failing after the third game.
Personally I think it was failing after 4 since 4 was when they introduced the entire band. BUT they have always been chasing after Rock Band once that came out. Rock Band never actually released any games that weren't adding something new to the mix or keeping them in peoples minds.
Rock Band = introduced entire band
Rock Band 2 = better version of 1 and came out around the time of World Tour
Beatles Rock Band = Added harmonies
Rock Band 3 = added the Key-tar

*Edit*
Guitar Hero-Introduced the world to music games as they are now
Guitar Hero 2,3 = track packs
Guitar Hero World Tour aka GH 4= Whole band
Guitar Hero 5-now = track packs

I havent picked up a GH since WT because I really didn't want to just buy new tracks for full price and have to pay for ones i didnt like.

They invariably keep doing something right, because Blizzard keeps rolling in the bucks with their titles. Besides, there are plenty of other great dev teams out there putting out quality products, so I don't see this as a problem.

I take issue with the OP's usage of the adjective 'evil'. That's a very strong word, with fundamental implications; I think its use in describing Activision is downright absurd. Activision simply a company looking to make profits, and that is the very essence of capitalism. Instead of evil, I would classify them as indifferent to the ethics of the publisher bashing gamer.

If this is such an issue for the OP, then maybe they should outline how and what they would do when publishing games, instead of indulging in what has now become a fashion amongst gamers.

Seriously: if 'hard done by' gamers want their opinions to matter, then they need to start constructing proper and viable arguments. This is much more effective then taking to a message board and spouting hate.

Well Blizzard has WoW which is a money printing machine. But that is neither here nor there. Activision is evil because it is run by Bobby Kotick who has made no bones about running a company like a company. Destroying all those dreams of video game development of being a job filed with dancing unicorns and cotton candy. OMG video games are fun so making them should be ...NOT!! That makes Acti evil. Blizzard does what I describe and they are golden to the industry and the perfect son. It is ridiculous. It is just proof of the stupidity of these "Acti is evil derp" threads.

I'm not sorry to see Guitar Hero go, but i've been boycotting Activision for quite a while now. Unfortunately, that boycott applies to Blizzard as well, which is why I have not gotten Starcraft 2, Cataclysm, and probably won't get Diablo 3 either.
