I'll be 40 in a couple of weeks.

Does that make me the oldest person here? At least, physically?

Mentally & socially, on the other hand ...

Oh! And for the record, I'm not one of those "living in my parents' basement 40-year-old virgin" stereotypes.

I'm married, have a full-time job and a mortgage, as well as two teen-agers of my own.

~Cheers!

so do your kids have Escapists acounts aswell?
and I'm 16 so to the OP no.
Err ... no. But they do visit here occasionally.

However they DO both have WoW and Xbox Live Gold Accounts.

And the older one has a DeviantArt Page and a YouTube page. So there's that.

I love the hissy fit this thread turned out to be...haha nice proclamation of "maturity"...its ok kids, youll get there.

Not many adults around here, just people who seem to think they are. Of course theres the staff, but theyre being paid so that doesnt count, then again if youre hanging around here as a 30 year old and not being paid to do so...i dunno that seems rather off to me. The criteria for "adult" is rather fleeting, i suppose i fall under that category. Own a car, own a house, own a shit load of bills, and i have a proper job. Thats right no more getting mommy and daddy to buy me that PS3...or whatever the kids are going on about today...DSi?
I've seen 8 year olds more mature than the "adults" here, so, whatever. But yeah, I fall under the category to, except I'm still in college.

Its you! Been MIA too i see. Yes, college is still going for me too...thats where most of my bills come from...bastards.
Yep. I had to finish my apartment paperwork, and my classes started catching up to me. But I'm back now.

Well most of the old group has either lost interest or been banned...or god knows where they are really. Im on here sparingly, some of these new kids bother me.
It's pretty much all gone down the tubes since NMS got banned. Things have been getting progressively worse since then.

I'm 13. I think I'm pretty mature. Why? Because I never laughed at the cartoon network fart and poop jokes because I'm not just some idiot kid who doesn't know more than shit.
Be careful - apparently it's dangerous to call yourself mature on this thread unless you're over 20.

People are like that.
My first instinct when a teenager says they're mature is to roll my eyes all, "yeah, suuuuuure you are," but it's mostly because I thought I was pretty mature for many of the same reasons when I was 13, and was I ever wrong -- I ran across old diaries earlier this year and I can't even look at that corner of my room without feeling the sweet kiss of utter mortification. I haven't met either of you, and I can't exactly make a verdict from a couple of forum posts or anything, but that's probably why you're catching so much flak.

If I was 13, then maybe I'd understand why it's so hard to believe I'm mature.
But I'm not 13, I'm 17 - I'll be 18 in about five month's time. I'll legally be an adult.
It's ridiculous actually, I've been called up for both statements about myself, and defending others. And here I am, still being quoted a month after this thread first appeared.

Don't get me wrong, you're probably one of the more reasonable people I've seen on this thread. I'm just sick to death of the lack of understanding that the older people around here seem to have.

I actually just came up with a theory as I was typing out this post, so I'll throw it out there. Bear with me.
Imagine for a second that you're in an exclusive club. You're quite happy that you are one of only a few people that are in the club. It feels special.
Now imagine that new people are trying to gain membership. You are quite against the idea - more members means the group is less exclusive, less special. So you treat these aspiring members with a certain amount of hostility - try to demean them, so that you can continue to feel superior to them.
Now seeing as adults are a minority on The Escapist (an exclusive club, if you will), is it possible that they are reacting to our claims of maturity in a similar way to the situation above?

Just a thought.

Like I said, I can't make any judgments as to your maturity. I didn't mean to call you out like you were some kid trying to sit at the grown-up table, so apologies for coming across wrong.

As for your theory, I mean, it's possible, although I sort of doubt it. I can only speak for myself here, but being mature (well, being an adult -- I'm an immature doofus a fair amount of the time) isn't really something I take a huge amount of pride in or anything; it just sort of is. Now it's like having brown eyes or being tallish -- I only think about it when it's pointed out to me.

Aside from its vague non-importance, why wouldn't I want the userbase of a site I visit regularly to be mature? I like talking with people, and I like talking with people who can bring something new and interesting to the table.

But I'm often wrong and still not psychic, so I don't really know.

Actually I think I came across wrong - I didn't think you were calling me out at all. I was talking about people in general.
But it's no problem anyway. =]

And as for my theory: it was just a random thought I had, I don't know if it holds any truth. :)

"Maturity is a psychological term used to indicate that a person responds to the circumstances or environment in an appropriate and adaptive manner."
Well this is the type of maturity that I've been talking about throughout the thread.
I can't speak for everyone though.

I'm new here and have only been posting for a few days. Today I checked out a few profiles and noticed most of the people here are in their teens. Now I'm starting to feel like a weirdo for being here. Are there any grown-ups here? (By grown-up I mean independent, living apart from your parents, credit cards, keys, the whole shebang.)

22 and graduating college in 4 months.

You're not weird.
