Cynia followed the group to the briefing room before taking an attention stance at the table.

"Sir, Cynia Ryman reporting for duty." She said as she snapped off a salute to Fury.

"Need artillery fire, where is the air support?"

"Oh God, he's coming! He can't be stopped!"

"Son of a..."

"We can't take him alone, it's the fucking Juggernaut!"

"...*****!"

Monaghan's eyes snapped open. By old habit, he tried to sit up - impossible, with a spinal cord severed between the fifth and sixth cervical vertebrae. The only reason he could swallow, breathe, or even take a crap was thanks to the assistance of the machines he was hooked up to.

Machines that tore out of their sockets as he came to a sitting position. He felt good, his limbs pulsing with strength unlike any he'd had in his life. He felt awake, alive, more alive than he'd ever felt, even before his injury. It worked. The serum worked! A grin split across Monaghan's face even as alarms began going off. A middle-aged woman in S.H.I.E.L.D. issue scrubs began to step into the room, then screamed like a banshee before hauling ass in the opposite direction.

"Well, that was odd."

He continued unplugging himself, only to hear a click by the door as two agents walked in, gripping shotguns. "Agent Monaghan - if that really is you - you need to lie down and lie still."

"The hell is this about!?"

Four hours later.

"So let me get this straight. You took a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent crippled in action, told him you were going to regenerate his injuries and turn him into a superhuman because you had reverse engineered Captain America's soldier serum, then you took the AVX Serum - a serum that has a habit of driving its users insane - and mixed it with blood taken from Bruce Banner?"

"Yes." The scientist - a man by the name of Doctor Matthew Mendoza - said, meeting Commander Maria Hill's eyes without any trace of fear, shame, trepidation, or much of anything else, just cold calculation and a trace of contempt.

"Does medical ethics mean anything to you, Doctor? The hippocratic oath?"

"I'm have a Ph.D., I'm not a medical doctor. Cellular biologist. You might not agree with my methods, Commander, but it's difficult to argue with results. His body has completely regenerated, not just his spinal injury, but every other injury that he had suffered. Even if you had managed to fix his spinal cord, he would never have walked again. If you had fixed his spinal cord, the pain would have made him beg you to kill him." He pointed at the monitor, where Monaghan stood, pacing nervously. "He may look different. But his mind is intact and his body is healed. Not just healed, enhanced. He's better than ever."

The image shook as Monaghan spun and grabbed the camera. "You people going to let me out of this fucking holding cell sometime today? I did nothing wrong!"

"You mean aside from the mood swings and how he looks like he just escaped from a B-horror movie?"

"He doesn't seem terribly upset by it. I daresay he wouldn't care if he looked like a Morlock if it means he can walk."

"Let me make this abundantly clear, Doctor. You are fired. The only reason I'm not putting you in a holding cell is because Monaghan doesn't have any interest in pressing charges. Get off this helicarrier before I fire you out of a missile tube."

Mendoza didn't seem terribly shocked, he seemed almost satisfied. "As you wish, Commander." The doctor began to walk away, a smirk crossing his face. He reached into his pocket, gripping the small metal vial containing a dose of the serum.

Five days later.

"What's your assessment of him? Is he fit for duty?"

"Do you mean is he suitable for assignment to a unit like Hulkbusters or the the Skrullhounds? No. But S.P.E.A.R. isn't a standard operations team. Agent Ryman should be able to rein him in enough to do his job. He's still loyal, he just needs to be kept on a tight leash. That serum messed with his mind, the discipline that used to be reflexive...well, isn't anymore."

"Alright. Send Director Fury our confirmation."

Minutes later, the PA came on, transmitting instructions. Monaghan looked up from what he had been doing - gripping a raw steak in his bare hands and tearing into it, swallowing massive chunks after ripping them off, and stood. After a moment of regaining his concentration, he looked sheepish, heading over to wash his hands and face, the other agents in the mess looking relieved that the nauseating display was finally over.

Ninety-one seconds later, he stepped into the briefing room, snapping to attention and saluting as soon as he was through the doorway.

"Specialist Kyle Monaghan reporting for duty, Director."

Upon seeing the others salute, Diana did so as well.
"Simms, reporting for duty, Sir," she replied in as professional a manner as she could. She lowered her arm and looked around the room, making note of the pods, then looked back at the director.

"Agents Mayfield, Simms, Ryman, Monaghan, Reetz, Satine, McPhearson, Shen and McLeary. Report to Briefing Room #7. Director Fury is waiting for you."

'Ash' McLeary grinned.

'Looks like the old man's ready to get the ball rolling'

He was on his way to the infirmary for a checkup, but duty called. If the doctors wanted to poke him with some needles, they'd have to wait. He about-faced and walked down the hallway at a brisk pace. As was normal for the Helicarrier, the halls were busy. Crew members scurried around, some carrying conversations as Ash passed by.

It didn't take him long to reach the briefing room. As he entered, he took a look around. Three of the agents had already arrived. Two women and a rather ghoulish looking man. After a few years with S.H.I.E.L.D, very few things surprised him anymore, but Ash had to wonder if the man had eaten at all in the past week. Ignoring his thoughts for the moment, he stood to attention and saluted Director Fury, who sat in a chair in front of them.

"Agent Dustin McLeary, reporting."

I've been cleared by Omega, sorry for being a little late. Here's the sheet:
Name: Dustin "Ash" McLeary
Gender: Male
Age: 31

Powers: To put it briefly, Ash has the ability to manipulate fire. More specifically, he can heat the air up to four inches around him to the point of combustion. He can wield this fire as a projectile weapon or use it as a utility to light dark rooms, trigger explosives, weld, solder, or cut through thin metal.

In addition to his fire, Ash possess strength, endurance, and reflexes superior to that of a peak condition human. Ash is also proficient with most conventional firearms and heavy ordinance, as well as mixed martial arts.

Appearance: Ash stands at 5'9, with a lean, muscular build. He has green eyes, short-cropped auburn hair, a thin goatee, and patches of scarred, burned skin along the right side of his body

Ash does not wear the standard S.P.E.A.R armor because it interferes with his fire-based abilities. In its place, he wears an armor-plated variant of the standard S.H.I.E.L.D gear. Lightweight bulletproof material grants him adequate protection from firearms while giving him the flexibility to utilize his fire if needed. His gear also includes a custom-made helmet that offers the same psionic protection that the standard S.P.E.A.R armor does.

Bio:

Ash was in Interpol's crosshairs when S.H.I.E.L.D recruited him. A member of the Irish Republican Army since his early childhood, he helped his father plan attacks. After being imbued with his powers after an explosion in an IRA chemical lab, an adolescent Ash used these newly found abilities to kill scores of British soldiers in carefully orchestrated bombings. Most notably, Ash was responsible for a fiery train station bombing that killed eighty civilians, ten police officers, and permanently maimed dozens more. It also made him one of the most wanted men in Europe.

In his mid twenties, he began to feel weighed down by the lives he had taken. After spending most of his life murdering innocents, he was done. His new attitude did not sit well with the IRA leadership, who had come to view Ash more as a weapon than a strategist and fellow freedom fighter. He was ordered to carry through with a plan to bomb a British office building, a target that also contained a daycare center. Driven by guilt, Ash foiled the plot and fled the country of Ireland.

He spent the next couple years traveling through Europe under an assumed identity, with Interpol hot on his trail. During his travels, he tried to perform at least one good deed in every city he stayed in, usually in the form of vigilantism. It was risky and often drew attention to himself, but he viewed it as a form of penance. He could never forgive himself for the innocent lives he extinguished, but he could at least improve the lives of people still on this Earth.

While traveling through a village in Switzerland, Ash was contacted (and after a brief fight, subdued) by none other than Natasha Romanoff, the Black Widow. She had come on behalf of Nick Fury, director of S.H.I.E.L.D. To Ash's dismay, Romanoff revealed that S.H.I.E.L.D had been keeping a very close eye on him since the train station bombing. After he fled Ireland, they actively followed him through Europe and threw Interpol off his scent. S.H.I.E.L.D was interested in his talents. In exchange for Ash's cooperation, S.H.I.E.L.D would grant him full amnesty and give him an opportunity to do more good than he could possibly imagine.

Ash enthusiastically accepted. He served as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D for the next few years, earning the respect of Director Fury after spearheading successful mission after successful mission. One day, Fury approached Ash personally. The Director wanted him for something called S.P.E.A.R, a sort of metahuman special forces team. Ash's combat experience and demolitions expertise would be a perfect fit for the team.

Feeling that this was an opportunity that he couldn't ignore, Ash agreed.

Role in unit: Demolitions

Millicent decided to get into the room before the hulk of a man tried to get through. She slammed the door open again. It was a nice sound, which was why she did it a lot. "Good morning, gentlemen~" she sang, sashaying into the room. She stopped halfway to her chair, staring with an open mouth at Monaghan, quickly closing her mouth.

"Ah, excuse me, Agent... terriblement désolé, terriblement désolé, I don't mean to stare."

There was a slight bounce in Ambers step as she walked out of the R&D department and towards briefing room #7. Not because she was a particularly bouncy person, but rather to hurry up a little. She had literally only returned from her last mission a couple of hours ago and had still been busy removing her armor when the PA rang across the carrier.

There had been an awkward couple of minutes when one of the R&D-scientists had gotten themselves stuck to the armor while putting it away, much the same way a child would get stuck on a still-wet bit of paper-machée, and Amber did not appreciate the delay. Or rather, she knew Director Fury would not appreciate it.

She knew she'd skipped the usual medical check-up and would probably take some flack for it but as the briefing room came into view and she slowed down her pace to something slightly more professional she was just glad to be on time.

Upon entry, she found Director Fury already waiting for her, and a small, still-growing peanut gallery of agents gathered alongside him. In the crowd, Amber recognized Doctor Satine. Amber had always quite liked the good doctor. Her tendency to switch between different languages (sometimes in the same sentence) gave her an air of slight but likable hyperactivity, which Amber rather enjoyed.

The only other person there that she immediately recognized was agent Simms, whom she'd frequently encountered on the S.H.I.E.L.D. firing range. She'd seemed pleasant enough on those occasions, though her almost disquietingly high accuracy had raised an eyebrow from Amber. Both eyebrows, for that matter.

The rest of the people gathered there Amber was less familiar with, or not at all in one case.

McCleary, Ryman and Reetz Amber was all at least professionally familiar with, to a certain extent anyway, but the 7th person there, who Amber guessed (correctly, as it turns out) was the "Agent Monaghan" mentioned in the PA announcement, she had definitely never seen around the carrier before. She would have remembered.

Amber tried not to stare and succeeded. Both as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and before that as a police officer, she was professionally obligated to unlearn such behavior and keep a straight face in situations like these.

"Director Fury. Agent Mayfield reporting for duty, sir." she saluted, taking up a spot near the pod with her name on it.

After getting jabbed by Dr. Satine, and giving a good natured grumble about doctors being a bunch of goddamned vampires, Neil followed the three women to the rapidly filling briefing room.

"Agent Reetz reporting Sir!" He said, snapping a salute once he stuffed himself through the door. Standing at the back of the room (he didn?t trust the chairs to hold him), he took stock. He didn't know anybody else there, but he?d seen some of them around before.

"Don't worry about it. You're hardly the only one who does. I'm not sure if it's the eyes or the teeth." He smiled, his lips sliding back to show the twin rows of razors in his mouth. A moment after he quickly noticed and closed his mouth. "Sorry. Specialist Kyle Monaghan, formerly of the Hulkbusters unit." He held out his right hand to shake, trying to remember that much as he might have liked to give a firm grip before, now it might not be such a good idea.

"Agents Mayfield, Simms, Ryman, Monaghan, Reetz, Satine, McPhearson, Shen and McLeary. Report to Briefing Room #7. Director Fury is waiting for you"

McPhearson was running late, which was not a completely unusual for him these days. Simple things like time never concerned him. After all, the story couldn't advance without him. It wouldn't have its hero. He walked along at a leisurely pace past the medical wing. He was already too late for his examination, but he figured the little bureaucratic step could be glossed over without a problem.

He found the hallway containing the briefing rooms, and shortly before entering #7, brought up a bright glowing light and lightly coated is uniform. Always dress to impress he thought, chuckling.

He entered the briefing room and saluted Nick Fury, while quickly taking in the group around him couldn't help but double take at what he saw. The man resembling a shaved bear was one thing, but McPhearson would have sworn that there was a demon sitting near his own seat. The light around his suit went from a gentle glow to solid armor.

"Colonel, what's the meaning of this? What circle of Hell did you drag this monster out of?" he asked, bracing himself against the wall, for what he figured would be the demon pouncing onto him.

As he walked around the complex, Charlie Shen was moving with a confident strut. His meeting with Director Fury could not have gone any better. After voicing his complaints regarding the tedium of the work that he had been doing before, Fury seemed to agree with him and told him that he would be reassigned to a special unit starting today. This is what Charlie was waiting for, a chance to break out and experience life as it was meant to be. Not in the sterile lab, or behind the desk of the computer. But out on the front lines, blowing stuff up. Life as he knew it would be better. Now his life would be nothing but pure winning!

Here we go. #7. He gave his hair one final go-through, making sure none of the spikes were hanging on the side. "Let's do it." As he entered the room, he got a look at the other people who were called in. It was half female and half....freak? A giant and a beast man. Ah fuck, freak unit. Gotta be kidding me. Suddenly Charlie had assumed a look of resignation on his face as he slunk into the room. It's what I get for speaking out I guess, fuck me. Fury was still there though, no expression on his face. He made me an agent for this too. Means suicide I guess. He gave a half-hearted salute and said dejectedly, "Agent Shen, reporting, sir."

Diana slid herself over to Amber's position, trying to maintain eye contact with Fury, who hadn't addressed anyone yet. Since the director was still silent, Diana figured it was still OK to socialize.
She placed herself in front of Amber and grabbed her hand in a shake. "Nice to see you again agent Mayfield," she said in a positive tone while her hand was rapidly shaking Amber's.

She smiled at her fellow agent "I don't think we've ever officially met, well I mean, we've officially met a couple times, I mean we know each other by last name and we've seen each other a bunch of times on the gun course, but we've never unofficially met off-duty, which is always something that I've wanted to remedy and I was going to mention this the next time we saw each other at the firing range, but we're seeing each other now so it seems as good a time as any to..." she stopped herself and released Mayfield's hand, "Sorry, I was rambling again. So, how have you been?"

The doctor found her mouth open again, this time in a slight grimace. She just turned around and gave the Director a British salute. "Dr. Satine here..."

She moved back towards Neil, trying to finish his physical while everyone arrived. She put her glasses up, poking him and trying to get a look at his face and ears. While she was busy, however, she heard something she wished wouldn't happen.

"Colonel, what's the meaning of this? What circle of Hell did you drag this monster out of?"

"Oooh que Dieu nous aide..." She wished she had brought her tranquilizers. "Looks like I'll be doing more than physicals today, huh, Mr. Reetz?"

Evidently Doctor Satine wasn't the only person onboard with a butt-load of energy. The rapid handshake and the rambling were slightly overwhelming, but not entirely unwelcome. If nothing else, it was nice to see a genuinely friendly face in the otherwise somewhat stale and overly professional hallways of S.H.I.E.L.D.

"Nice to meet you, agent Simms." Amber said after half a second of recuperation.
"I've been good. Just got back from a mission, but remind me to hit up the infirmary lat-"

That's about as far Amber got before the commotion in the room started getting out of hand.

Fury saw Monaghan going for a chair, picking it up and looking at McPherson. "Monaghan, DROP IT!" Fury shouted at him, making him come back to his senses enough to do so. "And McPherson, stand down and watch your damn mouth..." he shot McPherson a nasty look before turning to consult them all.

"Now you ladies know why you're here. And I trust you're smart enough to know the others are here for this purpose. You're all here to become the first members of a new unit. New superhumans are popping up every day, and the Avengers and such can only take so much. The thugs are learning about strength in numbers, and more and more unscrupulous mercenaries are being hired by those needing muscle. We need a team that can strike fast and hard. A team that can gather intel and hold their own before back-up arrives. A team that can take care of a threat before the Avengers are even needed. And so you 9 have been selected..."

The pods behind him opened, revealing 9 suits of armor. Each pod had the name of who each suit was intended for in front of each suit, and then the latches opened up. "...To form the Special Power Enhanced Armored Recon unit."

"We have two close range specialists, two heavy weapons experts, a sniper, a demolitions expert, a technology expert, a medic and a stealth recon specialist. You should be able to take on most situations ahead of you. And the boys in the labs have taken specifications from you all to make this customized armor."

Fury lit up a cigar, taking a moment before turning his attention back to the men in the room. "Now I don't want any of you freaks going into this half-assed. I have other applicants lined up willing to do the job, and I got a mission raring to go, so if any of you want out, now's you're chance."

Cynia saw Monaghan enter the room and couldn't stop herself from staring, even her time in S.H.I.E.L.D. didn't prepare her for seeing someone who was that disfigured. She forced herself to look away after McPhearson made his comment and she realized how rude she was being to what it seemed would be a teammate. At the end of the day all of them had been hand picked by Fury himself, as far as she was concerned that was about as glowing an endorsement as possible. That simple fact meant that everyone in the room had earned her respect as far as she was concerned.

'Now if someone doesn't have enough sense to keep one's mouth shut around the obviously very powerful thing in the room, well I guess I can keep myself out of it until said person needs to be kept from death.' She thought to herself with a slight smirk pulling at her lips as she listened into the commotion, keeping her eyes on Fury. She listened as he spoke before walking to see her armor marked with her codename, and her last name hidden under a small patch.

'Just like my standard armor, Good.' She thought as she looked over each of the pieces of her heavy armor and checked her riot shield.

"I knew what I was in for when I signed up sir. I'm not backing out now, consider me as staying on this."

"Looks like I'll be doing more than physicals today, huh, Mr. Reetz?"

Neil smiled down at the smaller woman. "If things get interesting, I'll do my best to break it up before you need to do to much." With that he raised his hands to about waist height and flexed them. "I can be very persuasive..."

Amber had briefly tensed up when Monaghan had picked up the chair, and she now realized that meant she'd probably squeezed Diana's hand significantly harder than is generally considered polite.

"Oh dear." she apologized, "Are you okay? Do we need the doctor to come take a look?"

While she was apologizing, though, part of her mind was still going over what Director Fury had just told her. The Special Power Enhanced Recon unit. Wait... Special Power Enhanced... Heh, cute.

Anyway, with one eye still on Diana, the other couldn't resist the allure of checking out the armour in the pod. Hers, in a word, was bitchin'.

"Yes, Director. My apologies, sir." He seemed to go to attention for several seconds, slowly breathing in and out, then seemed to recover his composure as the pod cracked open. He stepped forward to examine the armor. "This is Stark Tech, isn't it?" Paintjob needed a change, the blue and black just didn't suit him, but the claws mounted at the hands and feet were a nice touch. A bullpup SMG with an integrated suppressor. Very nice piece of hardware...although somehow, he doubted he'd have a use for it.

"Never thought I'd have armor like this. We sure could've used stuff like this in the Hulkbusters. Is this becoming SHIELD standard issue, Director?"

What had been a smile before now cracked into a huge grin when he say his armour. Despite how temping it was, Neil resisted the urge to rush over and climb into it right away. Doing his best to suppress the grin he looked at Fury. "I'm in sir...unless you want to see if that tin can you made for me'll fit the Hulk?"

"Nope, it's fine," she reassured Amber, while waving her hand about, trying to get the feeling to come back to it.

She left agent Mayfield and bounded over in a blur to her armor. Getting a close look at the tech, she was impressed by what she saw. "These things are so cool!" she remarked while lifting up the suit's right arm taking a closer look at the gloves.

She looked back at the Colonel with a big smile on her face, "I'm definitely in, sir!" she happily responded, while moving the right arm's fingers into a trigger ready position.
