:O your not kidding! That is creepy! Wait i've seen scenes from youtube videos where a girl just walks past people and they explode! Is that the same thing or different?????

Does she have long red hair? If yes, then that's Elfen Lied. I may be thinking of another show here, but I'm pretty sure that The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is light-hearted. It's just the premise of the show that's scary.

The scariest I've seen is probably either Akira or Biohunter. The latter is just plain freaky, and what's worse is that I know that there's anime out there that is much much freakier.

That anime is the king of making wish you had a pistol of some sorts under your belt.

Edit: It's genre actually would fall under at least psychological horror.

And since all blood in movies is faked, how scary something is, is purely dependant on how immersed you are.

That show freaked me the hell out, and I loved it.

Honestly, I would have to go with School Days, if you haven't finished I am putting why in spoilers.

It starts off as a typical slice of life romantic comedy....the quickly devolves into a love affair...which leads to one of the girls getting pregnet...then she kills the male lead for going back to the first girl...then first giirll snaps and decapitates the males corpse...then slits prego chicks throat and slices her open like a fish...then it all ends with crazy ass first girl cradling the head of the male lead. It was never explicitly gorey, just a little bloodey near the end...it's very disturbing

And if I may list manga, The Enigma of Amigara Fault. "Drr...Drr...Drr..." will never be the same to you again.
And Tv Tropes has a page on High Octane Nightmare Fuel in anime. I'm not linking like usual out of being a pussy.

I've actually never been scared by an anime. But the implications of the plot premise of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya gives me chills to this day.

I'd actually consider her to be a fairly harmless, benevolent deity. Consider that the universe was recreated 3 years before the start of the series and nobody noticed, and it might have been recreated again in chronological episode 6 and nobody noticed then, as things were basically the same. Besides, she makes the world more fun and exciting, as opposed to many traditional concepts of god who are quite oppressive and will throw you in hell at the slightest provocation, so she would be a preferable god to what many believe in.

Elfin Lied...Seriously...the people who made that show love gore.

For pure creepiness, this. I don't scare all that easily (like scared enough to fully invoke my fight or flight response) but the sheer amount of gore in the first episode just made me wretch. It wasn't even anime in my opinion, it was guro disguised with a story.

Perfect Blue is a pretty messed up anime that screwed with my head. I have never gotten scared in an anime. Red ink id still red ink no matter what it comes out of.

Any of Satoshi Kon's psycho films. Perfect Blue was mentioned, Paprika is a mindfuck of the highest calibur and Paranoia Agent is just...13 episodes of pure psychosis, Paprika on a murderous bent, if you will.

I'm going to go with "Paranoia Agent". It had several moments that made me laugh, or wonder, or think deeply, but even during those moments, there was always a strong sinister undertone that lurked in the background.

Naturally, the ending was a bit anti-climactic for my tastes, but eh... I still think it qualifies.
