Making female character playable isn´t a smart move because of hitboxes, they would need to be the exact same size as the men and have the exact same proportions.
If they made new hitboxes then woman would probably have smaller ones unbalancing the game.
(this is for playable female characters in general)
Make the hit-boxes the same size then?

There are numerous monsters in WOW that have stupidly big hit-boxes compared to the model size.

Also Why not just make the female characters the same size as the blokes? About time we had some different looking women in games.

Because inflating a hit box in a FPS game outside of the character model size would be shit. Same size is fine but not just an increase in hitbox and should be easy to do considering the game and the setting.

Yeah I see what you mean but I don't think making the female models the same size would be too much of a problem.

The female barb in Diablo 3 is a big lass and she still looks awesome.

As I added in the edit I agree and given the setting it shouldn't be a problem.

Isn't the deal with female characters in the Alien universe that they're not a big deal?
Not a big deal in the Alien universe itself, sure, but it'd be naive to say it wasn't a pretty big deal for the audience. Like it or not, there's a reason Ripley is a feminist icon...

Wasn't this movie based around a female perspective....?

And wasn't there two gun-touting female marines who kicked ass?
No there was just one. Vasquez. The other one didn't really kick any ass, she died with the rest of the mooks.
Aside from Vasquez, there were two female marines. Ferro, the dropship pilot, got jumped by a xenomorph in the cockpit. She managed to draw her sidearm but wasn't fast enough. Dietrich, the medic, was a victim of friendly fire when the flamethrower-toting marine next to her was attacked.

Have online petitions ever achieved anything?
Dark Souls on the PC? Well thats what I heard anyway.

Here's a great alternative to getting a female marine. Make all the marines have covered faces and large torso armour. Then don't say what gender they are. Problem solved. Equal imagination for all.

Anyway in reality does it matter? It's not like playing a female marine will give you a benefit against the Aliens. They'll eat/lay eggs in you all the same. Remember Aliens aren't sexist. :D

If the marines had any dialouge you could still tell from their voices. The only way that might change is if they were wearing something like respirators the whole time that made their voices robotic

There are 2 reasons it matters. The first being that Alien has always focused around strong female characters. Males often played secondary roles or the villains. The other reason is because this is an opportunity to advance gender equality in the medium. Video games have had a troubled past when it comes to gender equality and its time we evolved as our medium takes its steps into becoming truly mainstream

Why would they exclude female from multiplayer in the first place, especially if they already have models made for single player? It sounds like they're just asking for trouble.
I get the feeling it has something to do with server space. With the extra storage space needed for the meshes, textures, realistic female movement animations ETC. I don't think they chose to do it out of a hatred of female chars (like everyone says in these situations) given that they made female chars for the single player but instead I think it may be more to do with budgeting for server space and bandwidth necessary for multilayer.

If they've already got the assets in singleplayer then I don't see why not in multiplayer. The whole hit-box argument is a complete cop out. There have been plenty of successful games with multiplayer modes that use female avatars, Gears of War, Uncharted, etc. With no massive balance issues.

I already said cover their faces. Which now that I think about it is a sensible notion what with the Aliens' having acid for... everything inside them? and the Marines hardly want that on their face. Anyway, if they all had large torso armour and voices were really necessary in MP then just have voice actors for both, plain and simple.

Anyway for your second point, that is true for the movies and if the problem was with the single player and co-op however that argument wouldn't necessarily work well when the complaint is over having no female characters in MP MvA. There's hardly any character development in multiplayer competitive modes (excluding L4D 1 and 2 for obvious reasons) and apart from being an asthetic feature, choosing to be male or female won't change much. On a side note, how is a game about punching Aliens in the face and being badness a good opportunity for gender equality? Also game has four player co-op for the main mission with one character being female. Additionally, really.

It'd be nice, but... Yeah, we know that's not going to happen. History has shown that developers tend to have blinders on. If the fan base doesn't complain about something it doesn't get addressed. Sometimes not even then.

Besides, this petition isn't so much "WE ALL THINK YOU'RE WRONG" and more "Your potential customers would like this feature. hint, hint."

For myself, I have no great love for the franchise, but I think there are enough Female Gamers by now that female avatars should be a standard thing for games. So I signed because I think more developers need to realize that.

I think you are right that they didn't do it because they didn't want females to be represented in their game. However, that is sort of exactly what this action is saying. It doesn't matter what they intended, what matters is what the customer feels they intended. As you said, they should have done a better job budgeting, and should find a better way to solve the problem than shafting a gender--especially since the franchise already has a history of strong female characters.

Maybe they're worried or found that, like Rebellion did, that female models will cause detection issues. That's the reason there were none in AVP.

Then if they couldn't or wouldn't find any solutions to that problem, all criticism they get for it is totally deserved. TF2 gets along just fine with vastly different body types on screen, and apparently so does the Mass Effect multiplayer. If the problem was unexpected then fine, but if they needed more time to solve it they should have pushed back the deadline. Now instead of delaying their sale date, they're going to have bad press to deal with, and likely fewer sales to boot. And again, it is not undeserved.

I'd imagine they'd catch a comparative level of flak for yet another delay. They've had a bad habit of doing that for this project.
