Well there's a difference between not caring and not helping. Personally, I care, even if I can't really offer my help. It sucks that people are in situations like that, and it's much, much worse when you consider the amount of sex slavery and such going on in those situations. I don't understand how you could just not give a crap about that. Though I suppose the predominant worldview now is that we're all just animals with random, pointless origins, and we may as well only care about our own well-being and enjoyment because human life has no value anyway.

And maybe you're sitting at your keyboard thinking about the Earth's desperate need to stop the cruel product testing on animals destroying the ozone, but probably, you aren't.

All life is utterly meaningless and leads to the same end, death. So, enjoy your life while you are here. Raise some hell, get in some fights, but don't worry about people who are just as worthless as you.

No. I'll believe that. Thats why I think we should not have any form of government to begin with. Cause I think that we really should care about ourselves. Also we are just nothing more than animals who have evolved.

My university is made me read this book about some guy who built schools in the middle east, and they are making me go to these lecture/seminar things about third world countries and children my age that live there and their hardships etc. I just got back from one, and i feel like i wasted an hour and a half of my life. I honestly don't care. I care about me and the people directly around me, not someone i have never met halfway around the world. So i ask you fellow escapists, am i a total heartless douche for not caring?

Not exactly. It's the sad truth that no one chooses the life they're born into, unfortunatly some just draw the short straw. You shouldn't feel bad that you didn't.

I took a sociology course (globalization) over the summer (as obtaining a BS in applied math requires me to take junior and senior level courses OUTSIDE OF FUCKIN' SCIENCE), where my professor tried to instill the following world view: The IMF (that's the International Monetary Fund), and the World Bank make every country in which they operate worse off, there is a drive to shut out the voices of the protesters opposed to a sort of corporate world government, and organic food is the way to go. It took me about 5 minutes to figure out that a) she was batshit fucking loco, and b) whether I cared or not, I wouldn't be able to make a difference.
So no, you're not a heartless douchebag, just a plain normal human. Whoever says they care is usually lying, unless they actually spend thousands of hours every year physically helping people.

Of course thats why they have all those problems. Not because of empires taking over countries, draining the countries of there natural resources then leaving and creating a vacuum of power which has led to civil unrest creating a poor unstable economy that results in a poor education system unable to properly educate people on safe sex. No, it has no positive effect on you. Without firsthand experience with these schools how can you hope to sympathize? People on the other side of the world are just that.

In Canada at least you start university in your 18th year, if you have a late birthday like me you can still be a child.
